Kniha Ranní červánky vznikala roku 1880 na cestách mezi Benátkami, Mariánskými Lázněmi, Naumburkem, Stresou a Janovem. Ještě na jaře 1880 nesl soubor 262 aforismů titul L'Ombra di Venezia (Stín Benátek). Do konce roku 1880 k němu přibylo několik dalších poznámkových sešitů; čistopis pořízený Nietzschovým "žákem" Peterem Gastem byl nazván Die Pflugschar (Rádlo). Na první stranu své kopie vepsal Peter Gast slova: ,,Je tolik červánků, které ještě nezaplály. Rgvéda." Citát se Nietzschovi zalíbil natolik, že titul knihy změnil na Ranní červánky. Myšlenky o morálních předsudcích (Morgenröthe. Gedanken über die moralischen Vorurtheile). Kniha vyšla koncem června 1881 u Ernsta Schmeitznera v Chemnitzu. Roku 1887 opatřil Nietzsche neprodané zásoby předmluvou a nakladatel E. W. Fritzsch v Lipsku je uvedl na trh jako druhé vydání.
