What Is Theology - Jean-Claude Larchet
Orthodox theology is intimately linked to spiritual experience:it has a very different meaning to the present usage of this word coming from academia. The scientific methods developed in the West since the seventeenth century can of of benefit in many regards, but without strong roots in the Orthodox tradition theology risks being eaten up by the human sciences. These roots are in the mystical tradition of the Church as passed down from the the beginning and expressed in the lives of saints, iconography etc. Thus this work has both a theoretical and a practical scope, of relevance to all Christians.

The Spiritual Roots of the Ecological Crisis - Jean-Claude Larchet
Many Christians are tempted to dismiss concerns over the environment and the catastrophic effects of climate change. After all, prominent voices who most vociferously warn us about this crisis tend to also advocate a wider worldview antithetical to Christian teachings. In this text, noted philosopher and scholar Jean-Claude Larchet finds the roots of the global ecological crisis in a rejection of a truly Christian cosmology. Explaining the relationship between man and nature ordained by God in the beginning, Larchet bases the degradation of the creation ultimately in the primordial fall and outlines how we have arrived at the present crisis point. Finally, the author proposes principles and actions deeply rooted in his Christian ethos that would allow mankind to restore and reinvigorate its relationship with nature.

The New Media Epidemic - Jean-Claude Larchet, Archibald Andrew Torrance
Dr. Jean-Claude Larchet, renowned for his examinations of the causes and consequences of spiritual and physical illness, tackles the pressing question of the societal and personal effects of our societal use of new media. The definition of new media is broad—from radio to smart phones—and the analysis of their impact is honest and straightforward. His meticulous diagnosis of their effects concludes with a discussion of the ways individuals might limit and counteract the most deleterious effects of this new epidemic.

Obálku neotevře, odesílatelku zdvořile odmítne a požádá ji o adresu, kam by mohl zásilku vrátit. Jean-Claude Mourlevat (*1952) vystudoval německou literaturu a poté učil němčinu v Německu i Francii.

Zatímco Dobyvačná vojska jsou řetězec mikropříběhů popisujících fantastický svět metodou „najít celé moře v každé kapce vody“, Arnova pomsta a Arnův triumf jsou klasické příběhy typu „hrdinova cesta“ a nabízejí pád a vzestup mladého vládce v krutém světě plném nájezdníků a podlých intrik. Spolu s už vydanou Diosamante (Argo, 2018) navíc dostává český čtenář do rukou téměř kompletní dílo fenomenálního a bohužel předčasně zesnulého Jeana-Clauda Gala, jehož neuvěřitelná barokně rafinovaná kresba dodnes ohromuje čtenáře. Díla byla oslnivá už v původních černobílých vydáních; nynější skvěle kolorovaná edice je posunula ještě o stupeň výš.

Jefferson - Jean-Claude Mourlevat, Antoine Ronzon
Naštěstí má dobré přátele a rozum v hrsti.

Jean-Claude Carriere v knize Bunuel procitá dává slovo svému někdejšímu kolegovi a spolutvůrci. Jde o hypotetický, posmrtný rozhovor, v němž Luis Bunuel (1900–1983) sice promlouvá ze záhrobí, nicméně velmi autenticky: hovoří o filmu, o surrealismu, o osobním i veřejném životě.

Robert Doisneau. Paris - Jean Claude Gautrand
As sensitive to human suffering as to the simple pleasures of life, Robert Doisneau is one of the most celebrated exponents of the Photographie humaniste that swept through the 1950s. Cherished in particular for his soulful portraits of Paris, Doisneau demonstrated a unique ability to find – and perfectly frame – charismatic characters, entertaining episodes, and fleeting moments of humor and affection. A summation of a spectacular career, this extensive Doisneau collection includes all his best-loved images from Paris alongside many lesser-known compositions which equally rejoice in “the ordinary gestures of ordinary people in ordinary situations.” The many quotations from the photographer throughout the volume immerse the reader in Doisneau’s thoughts and give verbal expression to the sensitivity, warmth, and wit which characterize his pictures.Through the images, we are transported to the grim suburbs of Doisneau’s youth; the world of manual labor whose nobility he so admired; and to the studios of the many groundbreaking artists that Doisneau captured in moments of reflection and creativity. A number of color shots of the transformed suburbs of Doisneau’s childhood reveal a different, more critical eye to the master photographer. For this new monograph on all aspects of the life and oeuvre of Robert Doisneau, his longtime friend and TASCHEN author Jean Claude Gautrand had unlimited access to the extensive photo archive Atelier Robert Doisneau. The preface is by Doisneau’s daughters Francine Deroudille and Annette Doisneau.

What is Madness? - Darian Leader
What is Madness? is Darian Leader s probing study of madness, sanity, and everything in betweenWhat separates the sane from the mad? How hard or easy is it to tell them apart? And what if the difference is really between being mad and going mad?In this landmark work Darian Leader undermines common conceptions of madness. Through case studies like the apparently normal Harold Shipman, he shows that madness rarely conforms to standard models. What is Madness? explores the idea of quiet madness - that at times many of us live interior lives that are far from sane but allow us to function normally and unthreateningly - he argues that we must seek a new way to assess, treat and deal with those suffering mental health problems. What is Madness? is Darian Leader s radically insightful and masterfully convincing exploration of a painful, complex but endlessly fascinating area of humanity. What It Is Like To Go To War - Karl Marlantes
In 1968, at the age of 22, Karl Marlantes abandoned his Oxford University scholarship to sign up for active service with the US Marine Corps in Vietnam. Pitched into a war that had no defined military objective other than kill ratios and body counts, what he experienced over the next thirteen months in the jungles of South East Asia shook him to the core. But what happened when he came home covered with medals was almost worse. It took Karl four decades to come to terms with what had really happened, during the course of which he painstakingly constructed a fictionalized version of his war, MATTERHORN, which has subsequently been hailed as the definitive Vietnam novel.WHAT IT IS LIKE TO GO TO WAR takes us back to Vietnam, but this time there is no fictional veil. Here are the hard-won truths that underpin MATTERHORN: the author s real-life experiences behind the book s indelible scenes. But it is much more than this. It is part exorcism of Karl s own experiences of combat, part confession, part philosophical primer for the young man about to enter combat. It It is also a devastatingly frank answer to the questions What is it like to be a soldier? What is it like to face death? and What is it like to kill someone?

Paris. Portrait of a City - Jean Claude Gautrand
A city built on two millennia of history, Paris is entering the third century of its love story with photography. It was on the banks of the Seine that Niépce and Daguerre officially gave birth to this new art that has flourished ever since, developing a distinctive language and becoming a vital tool of knowledge.Paris: Portrait of a City leads us through what Goethe described as a â œuniversal city where every step upon a bridge or a square recalls a great past, where a fragment of history is unrolled at the corner of every street.â The history of Paris is recounted in photographs ranging from Daguerreâ ™s early incunabula to the most recent imagesâ ”an almost complete record of over a century and a half of transformations and a vast panorama spanning more than 600 pages and 500 photographs. This book brings together the past and the present, the monumental and the everyday, objects and people. Images captured by the most illustrious photographersâ ”Daguerre, Marville, Atget, Lartigue, Brassaï, Kertész, Ronis, Doisneau, Cartier-Bresson, and many moreâ ”but also by many unknown photographers, attempt to bottle just a little of that â œParisian air,â something of that particular poetry given out by the stones and inhabitants of a constantly changing city that has inspired untold numbers of writers and artists over the ages. Presenting an exciting patchwork of images from past and present, Paris: Portrait of a City is a huge and unique photographic study that, in a way, is the true family album of all Parisians. It is to them, and to all lovers of this capital city, that this vibrant, loving, and tender testimony is dedicated.

Architecture of Human Living Fascia - Colin Armstrong, Jean Claude Guimberteau
This unique book illustrates the structure of the fascia in the living human being. Dr Guimberteau s photographs provide a detailed account of fascial architecture. He is the first person to publish video movies showing the structure of the fascia and how the fascia responds to it. The accompanying text explains what the photographs mean, clarifies the importance of the fascia, and sets out the implications of these findings for everyday therapeutic practice. This beautifully illustrated book provides an introduction to Dr Guimberteau s groundbreaking work. Based on what can be seen he has developed his own concept of the multifibrillar structural organisation of the body, wherein the microvacuole is the basic functional unit. His films confirm the continuity of fibres throughout the body thereby seeming to confirm the tensegrity theory, which provides the basis of many manual therapy and bodywork teachings. His work ties in with that of Donald Ingber on tensegrity within the cytoskeleton, and adds to the evidence linking the cytoskeleton to the extracellular matrix as described by James Oschman. The book provides, for the first time, an explanatory introduction and explanation of these theories. This material will be highly valued by osteopaths, massage therapists, chiropractors and others as it provides part of the scientific underpinning of their techniques, as well as an explanation of what is happening when they use those techniques to treat their clients. So Guimberteau s material confirms what manual therapists already believed but didn t fully understand. He has provided an explanation of how fascial layers slide over each other and how adjacent structures can move independently in different directions and at different speeds while maintaining the stability of the surrounding tissues.

What is Sufism? - Martin Lings
Martin Lings provides an excellent and authoritative introduction to the mystical movement of the Sufis based on his lifelong interest in Islamic culture. His explanation derives from a profound understanding of Sufism, and extends to many aspects which are usually neglected. His illuminating answer to What is Sufism? gives a taste of the very subject matter itself. What do Sufis believe? What do they aim at? What do they do? Unlike other writers on the subject, Martin Lings treats all the three questions with equal justice. He is thus able to give a wealth of answers to the main question What is Sufism? , each answer being from a different angle but all going to the root of the matter.A reviewer wrote Should the book appear in paperback, I would use it for undergraduate and graduate courses on Islamic civilization , and in fact What is Sufism? has become a set book in colleges and universities on both sides of the Atlantic. It is now accepted as the authoritative statement on the subject of Sufism and it has been translated into French, German, Italian and Spanish. It has also been published in Sarajevo in Bosnian, and is available in Braille.

What is Philosophy of Religion? - Charles Taliaferro
An important part of philosophy is concerned with religious questions. What is the meaning of life, and how might religious faith or doubt impact such meaning? What is the evidence for the existence of God? Is evidence essential for religious faith? What is the relationship between science and religion? What is the relationship between religions? How can or should one assess virtues and vices, right and wrong, from a religious versus a secular point of view? In this beginner⠙s guide, Charles Taliaferro addresses these and other important questions involved in philosophy of religion. He challenges the negative, often complacent attitudes towards religion as being dangerous or merely superstitious, arguing instead for a healthy pluralism and respect between persons of faith and secular inquirers. What is Philosophy of Religion? takes a practical, question-based approach to the subject, inviting the reader to engage with this exciting area of philosophy in a down-to-earth way.

What is Wrong with the World? - Timothy Keller
Everywhere we look, we see brokenness: wars, cruelty, and heartache and much more. We feel it in the world around us and in our own lives. How did it get to be this way?During his tenure as founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, Timothy Keller explained on a weekly basis how the Bible provides the most comprehensive and sophisticated response to the fundamental questions of life. In What Is Wrong with the World?, based on a series of teachings given at Redeemer, Keller answers the title s pressing question by revealing that the only thing that can account for the world s pain and chaos is what the Bible calls sin. This clear-eyed and ultimately hopeful book reveals how sin is not simply a bad thing we do, but something much more subtle and complex, affecting our relationships, our thinking, and every aspect of our existence. And only when we recognize sin for what it is can we find the profound, life-transforming answer our souls long for. What Is Wrong with the World? is for anyone who:Feels overwhelmed at the state of the worldBattles with repeated mistakes and poor choicesDesires more than pat answers to difficult questionsWonders how to know joy while still acknowledging painWants to understand how God s love gives hope even in the hardest of places.Today s battles across the globe and in our own hearts are not the end of the story. As Keller writes, If we stand any chance of answering the question of what is wrong with the world . . . we must begin with understanding the complexity and multifaceted nature of sin, and end with understanding the unfailing love of a God who chooses to save us from it. This book will show you how.

What Is Free Speech? - Fara Dabhoiwala
A fresh and exciting approach to one of the most controversial subjects of our time‘Free Speech!’ is a clarion call all over the world, yet what it means today is more contested than ever. Many cultures regard it as dangerous: in China, India, and across the Islamic world, unorthodox views about politics, sex, and religion are repressed and people are often punished for expressing them. Even in the western world, where it is held up as a core value, there is widespread discord and disagreement about what freedom of expression means.Amidst perennial imbalances of power, continually evolving cultural taboos, dramatic new technologies and a fast-changing global media landscape, where free speech comes from – and how we might think about it – are critical questions. Through the lens of history, What Is Free Speech? shows us that freedom of speech is not an absolute from which societies and regimes have drifted or dissented at different times, but something more complicated and interesting. Our modern conceptions of press and speech liberty, Dabhoiwala shows, were invented in Britain around 1700.The real history of freedom of expression is a story of countless fascinating men and women whose lives have shaped its principles and practices over the past 300 years – slaves and imperialists, poets and philosophers, plutocrats and revolutionaries. Ranging across Europe, North America and South Asia, and not neglecting other parts of the world, Dabhoiwala rejects celebratory platitudes about the past and present of free expression. Instead, his book explains how to think more deeply about free speech as a global as well as a local question — by tracing how we got into our current predicaments, showing that history complicates our contemporary presumptions, and suggesting fresh possibilities for the future.

What is the Grass - Mark Doty
Mark Doty has always felt haunted by Walt Whitmanâ ™s bold, new American voice, and by his equally radical claims about body and soul and what it means to be a self. In What Is the Grass, Doty â “ a poet, a lover of men, a New Yorker, and an American â “ keeps company with Whitman and his mutable, landmark work, Leaves of Grass, tracing the resonances between his own experience and the legendary poetâ ™s life and work. What is it, then, between us? Whitman asks. Dotyâ ™s answer is to explore spaces tied to Whitmanâ ™s life and spaces where he finds the poetâ ™s ghost, meditating on desire, love, and the mysterious wellsprings of the poetâ ™s enduring work. How does a voice survive death? What Is the Grass is a conversation across time and space, a study of the astonishment one poet finds in the accomplishment of another, and an attempt to grasp Whitmanâ ™s deeply hopeful vision of humanity.

What Is Populism? - Jan-Werner Müller
This lucid guide is essential reading GuardianFrom Donald Trump to Recep Erdogan, populists are on the rise across the globe. But what exactly is populism? Should everyone who criticizes Wall Street or Washington be called a populist? What precisely is the difference between right-wing and left-wing populism? Does populism bring government closer to the people or is it a threat to democracy? Who are the people anyway and who can speak in their name? These questions have never been more pressing. In this provocative book, Jan-Werner Müller argues that at populism s core is a rejection of pluralism. Populists will always claim that they and they alone represent the people and their true interests. Contrary to conventional wisdom, populists can govern on the basis of their claim to exclusive moral representation of the people: if populists have enough power, they will end up creating an authoritarian state that excludes all those not considered part of the proper people . Proposing a number of concrete strategies for how liberal democrats should best deal with populists, Müller shows how to counter their claims to speak exclusively for the silent majority .*Updated with a new afterword*

What Is the Welfare State For? - Paul Spicker
Most states in the world make some provision for the welfare of their citizens. Every state engages with health care provision, almost all provide education services, and, after an explosion of interest in recent years, a substantial majority now have national schemes in place for cash assistance. Welfare states matter for peopleâ ™s lives â “ but there is little agreement about what one is. What are these states trying to do, and why? The book discusses the institutions and methods that characterise welfare states around the world. It focuses on the aims, purposes and justifications for social welfare services in order to explain what the welfare state is for.

What is the purpose of humanism in an increasingly secular world?Written by a pre-eminent authority in this field, this book shows how humanismâ ™s purpose is to help people to meet their need to understand the world around them. Given the growing demand for humanist funerals, weddings and baby naming ceremonies, it will help both existing adherents and the â œhumanism-curiousâ to contextualise its potential role in making sense of their lives.

What is Life? - Erwin Schrödinger
Nobel laureate Erwin Schrödinger s What is Life? is one of the great science classics of the twentieth century. It was written for the layman, but proved to be one of the spurs to the birth of molecular biology and the subsequent discovery of DNA. What is Life? appears here together with Mind and Matter, his essay investigating a relationship which has eluded and puzzled philosophers since the earliest times. Brought together with these two classics are Schrödinger s autobiographical sketches, which offer a fascinating account of his life as a background to his scientific writings.

What Is Mine - Jose Henrique Bortoluci
In What Is Mine, sociologist José Henrique Bortoluci uses interviews with his father, Didi, to retrace the recent history of Brazil and of his family. From the mid-1960s to the mid-2010s, Didi⠙s work as a truck driver took him away from home for long stretches at a time as he crisscrossed the country and participated in huge infrastructure projects including the Trans-Amazonian Highway, a scheme spearheaded by the military dictatorship of the time, undertaken through brutal deforestation. An observer of history, Didi also recounts the toll his work has taken on his health, from a heart attack in middle age to the cancer that defines his retirement. Bortoluci weaves the history of a nation with that of a man, uncovering parallels between cancer and capitalism ⠓ both sustained by expansion, both embodiments of ⠘the gospel of growth at any cost⠙ ⠓ and traces the distance that class has placed between him and his father. Influenced by authors such as Annie Ernaux and Svetlana Alexievich, What Is Mine is a moving, thought-provoking and brilliantly constructed examination of the scars we carry, as people and as countries.
