Cliff Railways - Peter Johnson

In the 19th Century there was a widespread feeling in seaside resorts with cliffs that visitor numbers would be increased if there was an easy way of reaching, and more importantly, returning from the beach, avoiding flights of stairs or long zig-zag paths. To address this issue, the first cliff railway was built at Scarborough in 1875. Since then, another twenty-nine, or thirty if the Leas lift at Folkestone, which was duplicated in 1890, is counted as two, have been built, including three at inland locations. Despite having the same function, all the cliff railways are different and have their own characteristics. Some of them still use water as a power source. The remainder use electric motors. In addition to telling the story of Britain’s cliff railways, author Peter Johnson tells the story of the authorised but unbuilt cliff railways, vertical lifts and electric stairways that serve or served the same function in a few places, and adds details of what might be called ‘cliff railway derivatives,’ steep-grade, rope-hauled, railways, airport automated people movers, and modern inclined lift installations that might have been built as cliff railways if they had been built a hundred years ago. A4 Pacific Locomotives - Peter Tuffrey

The ''A4'' class of Pacific locomotives, designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for the London & North Eastern Railway in the 1930s, was arguably the most distinctive and most famous type of steam locomotive built in Britain. Their streamlined design not only reflected the art deco and modernist style of the era but was also functional, enabling them to travel efficiently at high speeds. On 3 July 1938 the most famous locomotive in the class, Mallard, broke the world speed record for a steam locomotive, travelling at 126mph. This record has never been broken.A total of 35 of these beautiful locomotives were built from 1935-38. The first four were originally painted silver, included the word ''silver'' in their names, and were built to haul the glamorous new ''Silver Jubilee'' train from London and Newcastle. Their success led to a second batch being built from 1937-38, named after birds, LNER directors or British empire countries, for new streamlined services from London King''s Cross to Edinburgh and to Bradford/Leeds.Leading up to Mallard''s world-record run, the A4s broke several other speed records and the efficiency of Gresley''s elegant design ensured they continued in top link service into the BR era. particularly London-Edinburgh but also ... Buses in the Midlands: 1990s and 2000s - Matt Cooper

During the 1990s and 2000s the bus and coach scene across the Midlands evolved at a much greater rate than that of the preceding decades. From 1986 the subsidiaries of the National Bus Company were privatised along with several municipally owned companies across the region, the largest of which was the bus operations of West Midlands PTE. Independent companies came to try their hand by setting up new routes or networks and were joined by some established coach operators wishing to exploit new opportunities. This book looks at numerous coaching operations as they criss-cross this centrally located region, with established National Express services being joined by new ventures such as Stagecoach-owned Megabus. The region largely covers the area once served by Midland Red, with many operators, bus types and liveries to be seen, along with changing road layouts, bus stations and transport infrastructure. During this period tram systems returned to both Nottingham and Birmingham with bus services altered and adapted. Through a wealth of fascinating images and informative captions, Matt Cooper documents the transition from the post-privatisation era to the modern day.

Preserved Steam on the West Highland Railway - David Price

The railway from Glasgow to Fort William and Mallaig passes through superb and varied scenery from the shores of the Firth of Clyde, alongside lochs and mountains, across the desolate Great Moor of Rannoch before descending to Glen Spean and approaching Fort William from the north. A reversal is needed to continue to Mallaig, crossing the spectacular Glenfinnan viaduct to reach the fishing port on the west coast.Although diesel traction took over in the early 1960s, a limited steam service to Mallaig to cater for the tourist market was introduced by ScotRail in 1984. West Coast Railways took over in 1995 and now operate a service for some six months of the year. Since 1987 there have also been some steam-hauled trips on the line to Glasgow.David Price has visited the line many times and presents a vibrant selection of images that illustrate steam on the West Highland Railway.

Heritage Railways in the Midlands - Simon Elson

Nearly sixty years have passed since the Beeching Axe began to fall on thousands of miles of track in the United Kingdom’s railway network. Heritage railways emerged from this, and in this book Simon Elson explores those in the Midlands. Here, the author rides the lines in the carriages and, on footplates, catalogues the engines and rolling stock and goes into the history of specific engines of significant interest. He studies and photographs the history and architecture of the stations and engine sheds that have been preserved or rebuilt in period, and personal stories are shared by the people who bring the past to life for us all to enjoy.

Railways in Devon and Cornwall in the Late 20th Century - Peter J Green

Devon and Cornwall have long been attractive destinations, not only for holidaymakers, but also for railway enthusiasts, and it was in Devon, during a family holiday in 1959 that the author’s passion for railways began. Peter started photographing railways at an early age, mainly concentrating on steam, but he made some visits to Devon in the 1970s, to see the Western Class diesel-hydraulics running along the coast. They were being replaced by Class 50 diesel-electrics at the time. More time was spent in Devon in the 1970s and early 1980s photographing preserved railways as well as the modern scene, and an Easter visit to Goodrington became a regular event for several years. The 1986 West of England resignalling scheme provided a good reason for a further series of visits to Devon to record the mechanical signal boxes, semaphore signalling and associated equipment before it all disappeared. The first of the author’s many trips to Cornwall was in the summer of 1984, when he spent ten days attempting to photograph the entire Cornish railway system. Although an impossible task, the Class 37s on the china clay operations, as well as all the 'Peaks', Class 47s and 50s on the main lines, ... Unknown localization key: "more"

An Atlas of the Railways in South West and Central Southern England - Stuart Malthouse

This railway atlas presents a much wider range of railway types and their features than those shown on most existing maps. Its coverage begins with the earliest railways and carries through to the present day. The area covered in this volume extends from Cornwall in the South West to Hampshire in Central Southern England and as far north as Bristol and Swindon. Industrial railways are shown as well as passenger carrying lines. Each map is accompanied by a detailed key to the public and private railway systems shown. This includes dates of operation, gauges and significant topographical features. Information on stations includes the opening and closing dates and any name changes which occurred. A chronology of the public railway routes also accompanies each map, which includes independent public railways and any independent private railways with public rail involvement. Approximately 76 pages of detailed information about the railway system in the areas covered and a chronology preface the railway atlas section providing a wealth of detailed reference material.

North West Railways Gallery - David Maidment

This book contains a selection of mainly unpublished photographs from the vast collection of railway photos and slides held in the archives of the Manchester Locomotive Society, founded in 1935, and based at their clubrooms on Stockport station. Many were taken by the original members of the club during the 1930s and in the post-war period of the early 1950s. Their locations range from Stafford in the south to Shap in the north and Shrewsbury/Llandudno in the west to Peak Forest in the east and their dates range from the Victorian era to the present day. Most of the photos are of locomotives and trains of the London & North Western and Lancashire and Yorkshire Railways and the successor LMS Company, but the range includes some Midland and Great Western subjects. The book will be of interest to railway historians and modellers of the period and timescales portrayed and to those just fascinated by the railways of the industrial north-west and the magnificent scenery of the locations in North Wales, the Peak and Lake Districts.

Railways in Victorian London - Brandon David

London has always been a major transport hub. Indeed, it owes its origins to being the location in ancient times of what was then the lowest bridging point of the River Thames. From the 1830s to 1914 it became the focal point of Britain''s railway system. In that time a railway network of extraordinary complexity developed, serving the needs of London''s citizens and providing access for huge numbers of visitors of all kinds. Here we consider some of the ways in which the railways contributed to London''s transformation into a world city, perhaps THE world city of the Victorian and Edwardian period. With an emphasis on the social impact of the railways, the book examines, among other issues, how they contributed to the growth of suburbia, helped to provide London with vital supplies of food and fuel, the way in which the Underground made it quicker and easier to move about, produced huge, luxurious hotels and spectacular bridges and destroyed some of the capital''s worst slums. London has always had an underbelly and the coming of the railways created new opportunities for criminal activity. In fictional crime, Sherlock Holmes made frequent use of the railways. Industrial Locomotives & Railways of The North East - Gordon Edgar

Continuing his series of regional books reviewing the industrial railways of England, Wales and Scotland, author Gordon Edgar looks at the railways of what is today Northumbria, County Durham and Teesside, covering a period of the last six decades, with an emphasis upon the former National Coal Board railways. This is the eighth volume in the series, covering an area once proudly boasting widespread coal mining, steelmaking and shipbuilding activities, as well as numerous other traditional industries large and small, most now sadly history. The industrial railway diversity that one could have witnessed in this region up until the latter part of the twentieth century was arguably unequalled in Britain. The National Coal Board’s Lambton, Hetton, Bowes, Derwenthaugh, Ashington and Backworth railway systems, and the steel and ironworks complexes at Consett, Lackenby and Skinningrove, and Doxford’s shipyard in Sunderland are just some of the locations familiar to many industrial railway enthusiasts, all of which are covered. Far-reaching changes in this region over the last half-century sadly leave just three bona-fide industrial railway locations featured in this book surviving today.Primarily utilising previously unpublished photographs, the author offers a fascinating insight into the industrial railways and locomotives of this region, endeavouring to ... Railways - Christian Wolmar

From Britain''s most popular railway historian, a concise, authoritative and fast-paced telling of how the railways changed the world. The arrival of the railways in the first half of the nineteenth century and their subsequent spread across every one of the world''s continents acted as a spur for economic growth and social change on an extraordinary scale. The ''iron road'' stimulated innovation in engineering and architecture, enabled people and goods to move around the world more quickly than ever before, and played a critical role in warfare as well as in the social and economic spheres.Christian Wolmar describes the emergence of modern railways in both Britain and the USA in the 1830s, and elsewhere in the following decade. He charts the surge in railway investment plans in Britain in the early 1840s and the ensuing ''railway mania'' (which created the backbone of today''s railway network), and the unstoppable spread of the railways across Europe, America and Asia. Above all, he assesses the global impact of a technology that, arguably, had the most transformative impact on human society of any before the coming of the Internet, and which, as it approaches two centuries of existence, continues to play a key role ... Early Railways of Scotland - Anthony Dawson, Ed, FSA Scot Bethune

Scottish railway history began in 1722 when William Dickson commenced work on the Tranent–Cockenzie Waggonway. Built entirely in wood and designed to carry coal from pits at Tranent to salt pans at Cockenzie, it was the first railway to be built in Scotland. Developing first in the most industrialised parts of the country, in the Lothians and later around Glasgow, wooden and iron railways flourished in no small part thanks to the work of Robert Stevenson. Ed Bethune and Anthony Dawson of the 1722 Waggonway Project present a century-long tour of the earliest of Scottish railways, beginning in 1722 and ending with the Garnkirk & Glasgow Railway of 1831, the first ‘modern’ railway in Scotland. The 1722 Waggonway Heritage Group was established in 2017 to preserve, promote and enhance the history of the Tranent–Cockenzie Waggonway through research, archaeology and community heritage initiatives. Thanks to the work of the group, much is now known about how early wooden railways were constructed and how early nineteenth-century fish-bellied rails laid on stone blocks worked, as well as the 1833 Robert Stevenson-designed harbour at Cockenzie.Brand-new information from the archival and archaeological work into Scotland’s earliest railways is showcased alongside fascinating and rare images, all ... The Railways - Bradley Simon

Sunday Times History Book of the Year 2015Britain''s railways have been a vital part of national life for nearly 200 years. Transforming lives and landscapes, they have left their mark on everything from timekeeping to tourism. As a self-contained world governed by distinctive rules and traditions, the network also exerts a fascination all its own. From the classical grandeur of Newcastle station to the ceaseless traffic of Clapham Junction, from the mysteries of Brunel''s atmospheric railway to the lost routines of the great marshalling yards, Simon Bradley explores the world of Britain''s railways, the evolution of the trains, and the changing experiences of passengers and workers. The Victorians'' private compartments, railway rugs and footwarmers have made way for air-conditioned carriages with airline-type seating, but the railways remain a giant and diverse anthology of structures from every period, and parts of the system are the oldest in the world.Using fresh research, keen observation and a wealth of cultural references, Bradley weaves from this network a remarkable story of technological achievement, of architecture and engineering, of shifting social classes and gender relations, of safety and crime, of tourism and the changing world of work. What Railways Left Behind - Steve Liptrot

Railways have been around for about 200 years and while the majority have flourished and are still in existence today, many no longer remain. Some of these have completely disappeared, especially those associated with the transportation of industrial commodities such as coal. In some instances, passenger railways have not faired much better than their industrial counterparts and the Beeching Report led to the closure of 2,300 railway stations and over 5,000 of track miles in Britain in the 1960s. When railways are closed their infrastructure such as track, station buildings, signal boxes etc. are generally removed and over time the land is repurposed for houses, retail footpaths, cycleways or simply returned to open land. However, this is not always the case and sometimes the removal of the railway infrastructure is not undertaken in a diligent manner resulting in items such as track, buildings or redundant equipment being left behind. In addition, railway artifacts such as locomotives or rolling stock may be deliberately left in situ to mark the history of what has gone before.Steve Liptrot offers a fascinating pictorial history of what railways have left behind in Britain and a selection of European countries.

British Railways Diesel and Electric Locomotives - Hugh Longworth

Hugh Longworth has published a number of very successful volumes on British Railways'' steam locos, DMUs and coaching stock. His thorough and detailed research has focused on the operation history and allocations of the rolling stock types covered in these books. In this completely new work, in the style of those previously published, he covers in detail all the classes of diesel and electrics locomotives that were introduced by BR from the modernisation plan of 1955 to the present day. Each class, which operated over this lengthy period, is covered in the book. The headlong rush to eliminate steam traction and modernise the railways from the 1950s onwards produced very mixed results. Some of the locomotives introduced were very successful and long lived with examples still in service well into the twenty first century whilst others were found seriously wanting and withdrawn completely after only a few years in service. For each class, a concise history is provided giving construction details and full technical specifications. For every individual locomotive, a full listing is provided including all numbers applied throughout its career, names where they were allocated, details of entry into service, full allocation details over their operational life as well as ... Railways Remembered: North East England - Jenkins Martin, Charles Roberts

The north east of England was the crucible of the railway revolution in the early nineteenth century. The Stockton & Darlington Railway, which opened in 1825, was the world''s first public railway to use steam locomotives. As the national network developed, the East Coast Main Line passed through the region on its way from London to Edinburgh and virtually every part of the area was linked to a large and complex web of lines which were built to serve coal mines and other heavy industries as well as communities across the region. As the century developed, by a process of expansion and amalgamation, the North Eastern Railway came to dominate the area. This became part of the LNER group in 1923 though with the formation of British Railways in 1948, the new North Eastern Region of BR, with its distinctive orange signage, served an area closely comparable to that of the old NER itself. This new colour album explores the railways of the north east from the 1950s through to the 1970s using largely hitherto unpublished images from the files of the Online Transport Archive. These cover steam, diesel and electric traction and whilst focusing on the main line railways, ... Unknown localization key: "more"

The Railways of Bradford and Leeds - Peter Waller

It was to the south-west of Leeds that one of the key lines in the development of Britain’s railway network – the Middleton Railway – established the principle of seeking parliamentary sanction for the construction of a new form of transport. Five decades later in the early nineteenth century it was again the Middleton Railway that was at the forefront of the use of steam – rather than animal – power to move coal from colliery to market. From the early 1830s through until the early years of the twentieth century the local railway network continued to expand; indeed, if it had not been for the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 the area would have played host to one of the last first-generation main lines to be constructed with the Midland Railway planning – and partially constructing – a new main line north from Royston. In the event the line was never completed, consigning Bradford to be served by no more than glorified branch lines.Providing a largely illustrated account to the history of the railway development of the area, the book includes a fascinating selection of illustrations that focus on the evolution of the network in the almost ... British Railways Steam Locomotives 1948-68 - Hugh Longworth

When it was originally published, Hugh Longworth''s definitive record of every steam locomotive operated by British Railways from nationalisation until the end of steam traction on the network in 1968 was very much welcomed as it provided for the first time in one place a detailed and accurate source of reference on this important subject. With the book having been out of print for some time, a new and revised edition was overdue. However, the extent of the revisions, which included the books'' many photographs being given more space on the page and the use of enlarged and enhanced locomotive drawings, greatly increased the size of the work. Rather than attempt to cut or dilute the content, it was decided that instead of publishing one unwieldy and expensive book, a more realistic approach was to present the work in two volumes of roughly similar size. This is the first of these and focuses on the Great Western and LNER locomotives which became part of BR stock in 1948. The second book, due in 2025, will cover Southern and LMS locos and the Standard classes introduced by BR.The entry for each class provides essential information including the size of cylinders and driving ... The Acquired Wagons of British Railways Volume 7 - David Larkin

British Railways was created in 1948 when the Great Western, the London, Midland & Scottish, the London & North Eastern and the Southern were taken into public ownership. It inherited all their locomotives, passenger and goods rolling stock. Whilst much has been published on BR locomotives and passenger stock, accurate and detailed coverage of the large inventory of vehicles used to convey the huge volumes of goods traffic carried by the railways at that time, is less readily available. This new series, of which this will be the penultimate volume, sets out to provide that information. This book deals mostly with two types of vehicles inherited by BR, the relatively small number of Ballast Plough Brake Vans and a huge fleet of hopper wagons of all types and capacities. Included in this category are hoppers of both wooden and steel construction which were used for a range of traffic flows including coke, coal and loco coal, iron ore and ballast. These vehicles included both those which had been part of the inventories of the companies nationalised in 1948 and those that came from private businesses. This volume, as with the others in the series is illustrated throughout with around 200 black and ... The artist and conservationist David Shepherd had a life-long interest in railways. They were not only the subject of many of his paintings but he also actively supported railway preservation in the UK and abroad. He was instrumental in setting up the East Somerset Railway and owned a number of steam locomotives, the most famous of which were Class 9F Black Prince, later sold to the North Norfolk Railway, and BR 4MT The Green Knight, later sold to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. In this book J. C. Jeremy Hobson, professional author and David ShepherdÂ’s youngest son-in-law, has drawn on access to family archives, paintings, drawings and photographs, private diaries and reminiscences, to create a unique portrait of a remarkable manÂ’s life-long interest in railways with examples of his stunning paintings of steam locomotives showing these magnificent machines in their full working glory.

Miniature Passenger Hauling Railways - Paul Carpenter

The objective of this book is to share the pleasures provided by miniature railways of all sizes and encourage anyone wanting to build an engine or railway to ’have a go’. The book describes how the author embarked on such projects with great enthusiasm and passion, but with little knowledge. It confirms that ‘where there is a will, there is a way’ and knowledge will follow. The author found himself on a ‘voyage of discovery’, supported by joining clubs, talking to people, asking questions and then simply ‘having a go’. You don’t need to be an engineer to make a start and many outstanding engines and railways have been built by people from all walks of life. How to choose the most appropriate design and what equipment will be required to succeed is discussed. Steps are presented for building a steam locomotive, an electric locomotive, rolling stock and finally track, all illustrated by photographs and drawings to inform, guide, and encourage. It reviews some published steam locomotive designs and shows how they can be modified to perform better, using modern analytical techniques. Operating a miniature passenger hauling railway is great fun. Lessons learned are shared through all the activities in ... Unknown localization key: "more"

Britains Railways Through the Seasons - David Goodyear

The four seasons pass by like a gliding ship, each signalled by a transformation of changing colors and hues of light, thus providing a form of marker to these passages of time. Living in the temperate zone we experience four distinct seasons. The railway scene reflects such in its own special character - cold winter air enhances the bountiful steam escaping from the hissing steam locomotive impatiently awaiting its departure, while autumn enchants with trees that exude a variety of hues which embellish any image of even the most mundane suburban train. Springtime blossom and wild flowers bestow railway cuttings with a bounty of generous bright colors while coastal railways often look most inviting on warm sunny days as they pass alongside azure seas and golden beaches. The seasons each add their own dimension for the photographer to encapsulate, and railways passing through the ever-changing landscape provide their own tribute to this inspirational tapestry. As readers travel through each season, so they are invited to share this awe and constant source of inspiration from nature''s kaleidoscope of color.Photographs are provided with captions and reflective commentary to enlighten the knowledgeable rail enthusiast alongside those who equally enjoy such a portrait of ... The Minor Railways of East Anglia - Rob Shorland-Ball

Rob Shorland-Ball is a former teacher and a born story teller and so is well aware of the strong local loyalties in East Anglia.Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex are considered to be very different separate and independent areas by their inhabitants. When the author worked in Suffolk he explained that he came from Cambridge which he believed was the front door of East Anglia, an elderly Suffolk man to whom he was speaking, paused for a while and then said, with unarguable finality, "Here in Suffolk if Cambridge exists at all , it is a back door and rarely used."The minor railways illustrated in this book were once busy transport links and made vital contributions to the social and business heritage of the areas they served.By the 1950s and 60s, when the author explored them, they were rarely used, so needed to be recorded and their stories told before they were forgotten entirely. To bring this book up to date, the final section is called Destiny because some of the track beds have survived and flourished with new usage as restored heritage railways, footpaths and cycleways and one route as a busy busway.

The Railways of the Isle of Sheppey - Graeme Gleaves

The Isle of Sheppey sits just off the north coast of Kent, where the Medway and Thames estuaries flow into the North Sea. Over centuries this was a place that was home to farmland, castles, a dock yard, an air station, industrial instalations, calm beaches and a population of islanders who have taken a pride in their home. To serve the needs of all of this a small railway network was built up and even an urban tram network. Included in this was a fixed link that was the first to ever link the island to the mainland. From 1860 the network grew as the importance of the island grew. Continental boat passengers, dockyard workmen and day trippers, they were all caried on the trains and trams that shuttled about to, from and across the flat terrain of this often overlooked island. Being an island can create its own unique set of challenges and the railways on the island were certainly challenged by missfortune and circumstances, but the little network kept going until economics got the better of it and from there on it becomes a story of contractions and closure. The Island can still boast a railway today but ... Unknown localization key: "more"

abc British Railways Locomotives Combined Volume Summer 1959

A popular feature of our publishing programme for a number of years has been our facsimile reprints of selected titles from the famous Ian Allan Publishing abc series that first appeared in the 1940s. These modestly priced reprints are welcomed by both the enthusiasts who may have used them when they first came out and also by those not around at the time they were first published. They provide wonderful, nostalgic snapshots of a railway scene which has long since disappeared. The volume selected for reissue this Spring is abc British Railways Locomotives Combined Volume Summer 1959. This is in effect two books in one, abc British Railways Locomotives and the Locoshed Book. The abc lists all the locomotives which were in service at that time and the Locoshed book shows where those engines were allocated at the time the listings were compiled. The year covered in this volume is a particularly interesting one. By now, many of the new diesel classes conceived as a consequence of the BR modernisation plan of 1955, were coming into service though the steam locomotive was still supreme across most of the network, and indeed, new BR Standard steam locomotives were still under construction. As with ... Unknown localization key: "more"

The Vanished Railways of Old Western Dunbartonshire - Stewart Noble

Illustrated with 200 photographs, this book depicts the rich scenery and history of the old Western Dunbartonshire railway, which stretched from Clydebank with its shipyards and other heavy industries to the north end of Loch Lomond, now part of Scotland’s first National Park. The railways which served this area reflected its landscape; some, such as the West Highland Railway, are still in use, although parts have been lost and the nature of traffic today has changed substantially. Other routes have disappeared completely – thus today’s commuters on the busy electric train service from Helensburgh to Glasgow are frequently unaware that an alternative route existed for much of its length. An extensive network of industrial railways, often running along cobbled roads, has vanished. A railway which meandered eastwards from Balloch to Stirling across the flat farmlands to the Forth Valley was closed to passengers in the 1930s, and a short but busy branch from the West Highland Railway, built during the Second World War to service the military port at Faslane on the Gareloch, has also been taken over by the overgrowth. Other parts, now disappeared, had been built to bring the workers of the Glasgow area down to the fresh ... Unknown localization key: "more"

Traditional Signalling on British Railways - Robert Hendry

Signalling on British Railways underwent massive change from Nationalisation in 1948 to privatisation in the 1990s, but throughout this period much of the network’s infrastructure dated from the era of the Big Four and the pre-Grouping companies. The variety of traditional signalling in use in the BR era, from the pre-Grouping infrastructure and mechanical signalling up to BR-built signal boxes prior to the conversion to colour-light signalling, is explored here. The principles of signalling operation are also explained. In this book author Robert Hendry presents a fascinating insight into traditional signalling on British railways through a wealth of rare and previously unpublished images.

Railways of Sussex - Patrick Bennett

The first railway to penetrate Sussex was the Brighton Line of the LBSCR. From this beginning, lines spread out along the coast. Over the succeeding years further lines stretched across out the rest of the county, all built by the ‘Brighton’, which was by far the dominant railway company in the area and established a major works at Brighton. The company, however, didn’t have it all its own way. In the south-west corner the LSWR penetrated as far as Midhurst, and in the east the SECR had the fastest route to Hastings. Branching off this line at Robertsbridge was the Kent & East Sussex. There were also two of Colonel Stephens’ rather idiosyncratic railways in the county: The Rye & Camber Tramway, and The West Sussex Railway. The story of the growth and development of the railways of Sussex, and in some cases their demise, is told here.

Britain's Railways in the 1970s - David Hayes

The 1970s was a unique period for Britain’s railways. Steam had not long been replaced by diesel traction, the West Coast Main Line electrification was well underway with new and more powerful locomotives, and the colourful ‘rail blue’ livery projected an image of a new and altogether cleaner railway – there was plenty to be optimistic about. It was also a good time for the railway photographer – much of the railway infrastructure and complex track layouts of the steam era remained intact, freight traffic was plentiful and invariably passed through marshalling yards for sorting, and there were plenty of locomotive classes of various shapes and sizes, often regionally based, to pique the interest. As well as this, though, the seeds were being sown for an altogether different railway – one where locomotive standardisation was being pursued as a means of lowering fleet maintenance costs, where the freight focus was a migration to block trains travelling from supplier directly to customer, avoiding the inevitable delay and expense of the marshalling yards, and one where track layouts were being simplified and streamlined to increase speed and reduce permanent way maintenance. The photographs in this book capture a flavour of the railways during this fascinating ... Great Britain's Railways - Colin Maggs

Which was the first railway in Great Britain? Certainly not the one engineered by George Stephenson – one of the first was laid down at Wollaton, near Nottingham, open by 1610, long before Stephenson''s birth in 1781.In this comprehensive history, Colin Maggs, one of the country''s foremost railway historians, tells the story of over 400 years of British railway history. He covers early horse and gravity-worked lines to those powered by steam, electricity and diesel. The development of locomotives, rolling stock, signalling and major accidents – often marking major changes in how the network was run – are all described in detail. Pivotal moments including the Amalgamation of 1923 when most railway companies became part of the GWR, LMSR or LNER, nationalisation and privatisation are set in their historical context.Colin Maggs also ventures his views on where Britain''s railways will go in the future, including HS2 and beyond. Great Britain’s Railways is illustrated with more than 200 photographs of rolling stock, railway architecture and period ephemera.

Preserved Railways of Eastern England - Adam Head

Among the many lines that branch all around the East of England, there are some that can be seen diverging from stations that are never used by the train operating companies. These lines head to hidden gems within the East of England known as preserved railways. These provide their own different views and panoramas across the East, and with their range of classic steam and diesel locomotives are a mecca for the railway enthusiast. In this book there are seven preserved railways that can be found in the East of England, all of which vary in length and in featured locomotives. Perfect for both local visitors and those from further afield considering a trip, this is an affectionate tribute to an important part of our national heritage.

Dangerous Days on the Victorian Railways - Terry Deary

The Victorians risked more than just delays when boarding a steam train . . .Victorian inventors certainly didn''t lack steam, but while they squabbled over who deserved the title of ''The Father of the Locomotive'' and enjoyed their fame and fortune, safety on the rails was not their priority. Brakes were seen as a needless luxury and boilers had an inconvenient tendency to overheat and explode, and in turn, blow up anyone in reach.Often recognised as having revolutionised travel and industrial Britain, Victorian railways were perilous. Disease, accidents and disasters accounted for thousands of deaths and many more injuries. While history has focused on the triumph of engineers, the victims of the Victorian railways had names, lives and families and they deserve to be remembered . . .
