Can We Stop Killing Each Other? - Tafadzwa Nomphanelo Makwabarara, Tania Moore
Can We Stop Killing Each Other? wrestles with the darkest side of humanity. It explores the fundamental question of why humans are led to kill, examining the artworks, films, video games and television programmes that grapple with and manifest themes of death and destruction.Using material culture linked to moments of extreme violence, such as the Holocaust and the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, this publication offers a challenging but eye-opening consideration of some of the most horrifying events in human history as explored through art. Using historical and contemporary art as a lens to explore these themes, the book will include a new interview with Ethiopian artist Tesfaye Urgessa (b.1983), who creates emotive paintings reflecting on the refugee crisis. It will also explore the role of art as sanctuary from violence, through new approaches to the work of Claude Monet (1840⠓1926)

Missing Each Other : How to Cultivate Meaningful Connections
A Next Big Idea Club Winter 2021 Must ReadThe ability to connect with another person #39;s physical and emotional state is one of the most elusive interpersonal skills to develop, but this book shows you just how approachable it can be. In our fast-paced, tech-obsessed lives, rarely do we pay genuine, close attention to one another. With all that’s going on in the world and the never-ending demands of our daily lives, most of us are too stressed and preoccupied to be able to really listen to each other. Often, we misunderstand or talk past each other. Many of us are left wishing that the people in our lives could really listen, understand, and genuinely connect with us. Based on cutting-edge neuroscience research and years of clinical work, psychiatrist Edward Brodkin and therapist Ashley Pallathra take us on a wide-ranging and surprising journey through fields as diverse as social neuroscience and autism research, music performance, pro basketball, and tai chi. They use these stories to introduce the four pillars of human connection: Relaxed Awareness, Listening, Understanding, and Mutual Responsiveness. Accessible and engaging, Missing Each Other explains the science, research, and biology underlying these pillars of human connection and provides exercises through which readers can improve their own skills and abilities in each.

My Grandfather Would Have Shot Me - Jennifer Teege, Nikola Sellmair
What would you do if you uncovered your family s darkest secret? That is exactly what happened when Jennifer Teege, a German-Nigerian woman, happened to pluck a library book from the shelf. In that moment, she had no idea that her life would be irrevocably altered. As she flicked through the book s photographs, she realised that her grandfather was Amon Goeth, the vicious Nazi commandant chillingly depicted by Ralph Fiennes in Schindler s List - a man known and reviled the world over. Although raised in an orphanage and eventually adopted, Teege had some contact with her biological mother and grandmother as a child. Yet neither revealed that Teege s grandfather was the Nazi butcher of Plaszów , executed for crimes against humanity in 1946. The more Teege read about Amon Goeth, the more certain she became: if her grandfather had met her - a Black woman - he would have killed her.Teege s discovery sent her, at age 38, into a severe depression - and on a quest to unearth and fully comprehend her family s haunted history. Her research took her to Krakow - to the sites of the Jewish ghetto her grandfather cleared in 1943 and the Plaszów concentration camp he then commanded - and back to Israel, where she herself once attended college, learned fluent Hebrew, and formed lasting friendships. Co-written with award-winning journalist Nikola Sellmair, My Grandfather Would Have Shot Me traces Teege s resolute search for the truth, leading her, step by step, to the possibility of her own liberation.

We Have No Idea - Jorge Cham, Daniel Whiteson
In our small corner of the universe, we know how some matter behaves most of the time and what even less of it looks like, and we have some good guesses about where it all came from. But we really have no clue what s going on. In fact, we don t know what about 95% of the universe is made of. So what happens when a cartoonist and a physicist walk into this strange, mostly unknown universe? Jorge Cham and Daniel Whiteson gleefully explore the biggest unknowns, why these things are still mysteries, and what a lot of smart people are doing to figure out the answers (or at least ask the right questions). While they re at it, they helpfully demystify many complicated things we do know about, from quarks and neutrinos to gravitational waves and exploding black holes. With equal doses of humour and delight, they invite us to see the universe as a vast expanse of mostly uncharted territory that s still ours to explore. This is a book for fans of Brian Cox and What If. All We Want Is Everything - Soraya Chemaly
From the award-winning author of a “battle-cry of a book” (The Guardian) Rage Becomes Her, comes a fearless and timely manifesto for identifying and rejecting male supremacy in our daily lives.Drawing on her trademark skill, wit, clarity, and sharp insight, Soraya Chemaly walks us through how male supremacy operates, adapting dynamically in order to maintain cruel, exploitative systems of oppression. Male supremacy, she asserts, isn’t primarily about men dominating women; but rather a system that first and foremost violently pits men against each other using women and marginalized communities as resources in their competition for power. Under this system, anyone who isn’t white, straight, CIS, and adhering to strict rules of traditional masculinity is considered inferior and rendered “other”—women, LGBTQ+ people, people of color, immigrants, religious minorities, the disabled, and Black and Indigenous communities. Being feminized defines vulnerability, exploitability, and disposability. There is no justice for any community until we confront this defining injustice. Most men don’t have to benefit from this system or feel powerful for this system to work, indeed only a relatively few do. While women, particularly those with multiple marginalized identities, are hurt the most, men, too, need liberation from this oppressive system. All We Want Is Everything offers both unflinching analysis and genuine hope, informed by the bold and revolutionary potential of feminist imagination. From private relationships to global politics, Chemaly shows how naming and refusing male supremacy is essential to resisting the forces tearing democracy apart. This fresh, timely, clear-eyed, and necessary manifesto is a call to refuse supremacist identities, relationships, and values in order to build more just, healthy, and sustainable worlds for everyone.

How We Change - Ross Ellenhorn
The Coronavirus pandemic has revealed a very big secret we’ve been keeping from ourselves and each other: We can be remarkably agile in the face of change. How is it that we are able to so radically and rapidly change our daily behavior in order to follow the social distancing and stay-at-home policies during the pandemic, and yet--pandemic or not--we typically find it difficult, if not impossible, to reach smaller personal goals like dieting, getting organized or changing destructive habits? The pandemic is life-threatening, so it ignites our survival instincts, activating that part of our brains charged with speedily and efficiently getting us to safety. But cholesterol, alcohol, and physical passivity are all life-threatening, and many of us humans have done a lousy job changing in regard to these issues, even when we have reliable information that they are killing us. Why do we struggle to change what would so obviously help ourselves individually? Ross Ellenhorn’s book, How we Change (and the Ten Reasons Why We Don’t) gives a fascinating answer. A clinician and thought leader in the mental health and addiction fields, he suggests that we’re often looking in the wrong direction when we try to decipher the factors that support human change. He suggests that it’s much more fruitful to look at why we don’t change, than figure out why we do. By looking at the reasons we don’t change, we give ourselves the best chance of actually changing in meaningful ways. Ellenhorn explains how we are wired to double down on the familiar because of what he calls the Fear of Hope - the act of protecting ourselves from further disappointment—and identifies the “10 Reasons Not to Change” to help us see why we behave the way we do when we are faced with the challenge of hope. Among them are: · To change means raising your expectations and thus risking that you’ll disappoint yourself.· Once you change, you are more accountable to make other changes than if you stayed the same· When you change, your future become much less predictable.· Change means destroying psychological monuments you’ve built to commemorate past injuries· Every time you change, you raise the possibility of losing or disrupting your relationship with certain peopleBy addressing this little known reality of fear of hope, and how it influences the 10 Reasons Not to Change, Ellenhorn actually gives us hope, helping us to work toward the change we seek. Ellenhorn speaks to the core of our insecurities and fears about ourselves, with a humor and kindness. By turning our judgments about self-destructive behaviors into curious questions about them, he teaches us to think about our actions to discover what we truly want - even if we’re going about getting it in the wrong way. Death As Told by a Sapiens to a Neanderthal - Juan José Millás, Juan Luis Arsuaga
A dazzling follow-up to Life as told by a Sapiens to a Neanderthal. ⠘We would love to discover that each species has a biological clock in its cells, because, if that clock existed and if we were able to find it, perhaps we could stop it and thus become eternal,⠙ Arsuaga tells Millás in this book, in which science is intertwined with literature. The paleontologist reveals essential aspects of our existence to the writer, and debates the advisability of transmitting his random vision of life to a dieting Millás, who discovers that old age is a country in which he still feels like a foreigner. After the extraordinary international reception of Life as told by a Sapiens to a Neanderthal, the most brilliant double act in Spanish literature once again dazzle the reader by addressing topics such as death and eternity, longevity, disease, ageing, natural selection, programmed death, and survival. Here you will find humour, biology, nature, life, a lot of life ... and two fascinating characters, the Sapiens and the Neanderthal, who surprise us on every page with their sharp reflections on how evolution has treated us as a species. And also as individuals.

Here We Are - Graham Swift
It is Brighton, 1959, and the theatre at the end of the pier is having its best summer season in years. Ronnie, a brilliant young magician, and Evie, his dazzling assistant, are top of the bill, drawing audiences each night. Meanwhile, Jack – Jack Robinson, as in ‘before you can say’ – is everyone’s favourite compère, a born entertainer, holding the whole show together. As the summer progresses, the off-stage drama between the three begins to overshadow their theatrical success, and events unfold which will have lasting consequences for all their futures. Rich, comic, alive and subtly devastating, Here We Are is a masterly piece of literary magicianship which pulls back the curtain on the human condition. #39;One to watch for 2020 #39; according to:The Sunday Times The TimesThe Daily Telegraph The Guardian Financial Times Evening Standard The Scotsman The Irish Times #39;He tells simple, truthful stories about what feel like real people. Here We Are is a welcome addition to a proud legacy. #39; The Big Issue The variety of voices and its historical and emotional reach are so finely entwined, it is as perfect and smooth as an egg. Passages leap out all the time, demanding to be reread, or committed to memory... It is perhaps too simple to say that Swift creates a form of fictional magic, but what he can do with a page is out of the ordinary, far beyond most mortals’ ken. #39; Rosemary Goring,The Herald #39;Here We Are is a subtle portrait of a vanished world, with moving passages about the problems of wartime evacuees returning to impoverished London life after the wonders of the countryside. #39; The Independent ‘In Here We Are, Swift does not just dwell on the pivotal moments of our lives, but traces their shockwaves both forward and back. Moving seamlessly from pre-war to post, from the events of one illusory, youthful summer to the present, we are given candid access to the innermost reflections of three people who loved and betrayed each other. The end result is the stuff of life, an enduring mystery that Ronnie, Evie, Jack - that we all - must live with. I thought it was wonderful.’ Joseph Knox, author of Sirens‘As with all his books, it’s the moments of quiet, undramatic poignancy that stay with you’ Sunday Express‘a quietly, devastating, magical novel’ Telegraph‘With a wizardry of his own, Swift conjures up an about-to-disappear little world and turns it into something of wider resonance’ Sunday Times ‘We are propelled into something extraordinary…Swift’s closing account of a mundane world momentarily pierced by a shaft of numinous mystery is magnificent’ New York Times ‘Graham Swift has perfected a distinctive style…his beautiful new novel Here We Are…is a work of magic: neither trick nor illusion, but a flash of truth’ Wall Street Journal ‘Swift captures the tragicomedy of life’ Washington Post ‘Here We Are is a paragon of the magic of compressed narration…Once again, Swift has demonstrated wizardry in his ability to conjure magic out of ordinary lives #39; NPR USA ‘ ‘“Here we are.” How easily those three small words can vanish in expected niceties—and how loaded they can be with bewilderment at the inexorable ‘‘tilt of the world’’. Graham Swift conjures them all, and more, in this short, word-perfect novel #39; Sydney Morning Herald ‘Graham Swift is the quiet master of fiction #39; The Age, Melbourne ‘An ethereal foray into the vanishing world of the magician…beautiful, breath-taking and heart-wrenching #39; Australian Women’s Weekly ‘In 2016 with his book Mothering Sunday Graham Swift reached a high plateau of storytelling art...Graham Swift‘s new novel Here We Are is on the same high plateau as Mothering Sunday #39; Süddeutsche Zeitung, Germany ‘The beauty of Graham Swift‘s books is that he gives you what you want without your knowing that you wanted it. How does he achieve this magical feat? It remains his secret. What a magician #39; Tagesspiegel, Germany ‘Swift is a master of the nuance and the hint, of what remains unsaid. In this respect a novel about magic and illusion seems exactly the right terrain for him...Once again he proves that he is one of the great conjurers of contemporary literature #39; Wiener Zeitung, Austria ‘Swift employs an unadorned but intense, musical prose that bathes the events described in an elusive gleam…Not for the first time Graham Swift captures the magic and mystery of ‘ordinary’ lives #39; Het Parool, Netherlands ‘The author knows, as always, how to render the human condition with a light touch… To catch the magic of life in words: an undertaking Graham Swift has mastered like no one else #39; De Telegraaf, Belgium ‘Swift doesn’t write, he whispers. His work is characterised by stories of ordinary life that, thanks to his mediation, always reveal a universal dimension…Here We Are is yet more proof of his incredible soft-voiced technique…a perfect example of Swift’s ability to touch the hidden poetry in every human being #39; Corrier

Imagine a sisterhood â “ across all creeds and cultures. An unspoken agreement that we, as women, will support and encourage one another. That we will remember we don t know what struggles each of us may be facing elsewhere in our lives and so we will assume that each of us is doing our bestâ ¦So begins WE: an inspiring, empowering and provocative manifesto for change. Change which we can all effect, one woman at a time. Change which provides a crucial and timely antidote to the have-it-all Superwoman culture and instead focusses on what will make each and every one of us happier and more free. Change which provides an answer to the nagging sense of is that it? that almost all of us can succumb to when we wake in the dead of night.Written by actress Gillian Anderson and journalist Jennifer Nadel â “ two friends who for the last decade have stumbled along together, learning, failing, crying, laughing and trying again â “ WE is a not a theoretical treatise but instead a rallying cry to create a life that has greater meaning and purpose. Combining tools which are practical, psychological and spiritual, it is both a process and a vision for a more fulfilling way of living. And a truly inspiring vision of a happier, more emotionally rewarding future we can all create togetherâ ¦

We Will Rest! - Tricia Hersey
A modern sacred object—beautifully illustrated and inspired by hymnals and abolitionist pamphlets—helping to escape from grind culture and dehumanizing systems, by Tricia Hersey, “effin’ genius” (Glennon Doyle) and bestselling author of Rest is Resistance Give the gift of rest and escape with this exquisitely designed volume of inspiring writings by Tricia Hersey, powerfully illustrated by award-winning designer George McCalman and featuring a silk ribbon marker. We don’t believe we are worthy of rest unless we burn ourselves out to accomplish it. Our thinking has been limited by disconnection, sleep deprivation, and the unattainable call for perfection. The systems will never give us rest. It is something we must create for ourselves and each other.  Just as the North Star guided the enslaved on their journeys to freedom, visionary artist and founder of The Nap Ministry Tricia Hersey leads us to imagine a new world: one in which we subvert the narrative of productivity at all costs and embrace rest as a healing spiritual practice.  We Will Rest! is a modern sacred object, medicine for a sick and exhausted world. Weaving together meditations and poetry with storytelling and art, Hersey provokes liberation through refusal and trickster rebellion in the face of capitalism and white supremacy.  There is another way. Focus on the escape. Focus on the transformation. We can just be. We are beautiful. We are enough. We are escape artists. We Will Rest!   ***  Have you ever noticed when you ask for rest the body becomes a holy trumpet the walls come tumbling down?

This Changes Everything - Naomi Kleinová
Naomi Klein, author of the #1 international bestsellers, The Shock Doctrine and No Logo, returns with This Changes Everything, a must-read on how the climate crisis needs to spur transformational political changeForget everything you think you know about global warming. It s not about carbon - it s about capitalism. The good news is that we can seize this existential crisis to transform our failed economic system and build something radically better. In her most provocative book yet, Naomi Klein, author of the global bestsellers The Shock Doctrine and No Logo, tackles the most profound threat humanity has ever faced: the war our economic model is waging against life on earth.Klein exposes the myths that are clouding the climate debate. You have been told the market will save us, when in fact the addiction to profit and growth is digging us in deeper every day. You have been told it s impossible to get off fossil fuels when in fact we know exactly how to do it - it just requires breaking every rule in the free-market playbook: reining in corporate power, rebuilding local economies and reclaiming our democracies. You have also been told that humanity is too greedy and selfish to rise to this challenge. In fact, all around the world, the fight back for the next economy is already succeeding in ways both surprising and inspiring.Climate change, Klein argues, is a civilizational wake-up call, a powerful message delivered in the language of fires, floods, storms, and droughts. Confronting it is no longer about changing the light bulbs. It s about changing the world - before the world changes so drastically that no one is safe.Either we leap - or we sink.Once a decade, Naomi Klein writes a book that redefines its era. No Logo did so for globalization. The Shock Doctrine changed the way we think about austerity. This Changes Everything is about to upend the debate about the stormy era already upon us.
