The Lockhorns: Someday We
A relatable and hilarious one-panel comic about love, marriage, and everything in between, THE LOCKHORNS reaches millions of readers every day with some of the sharpest one-liners in the history of the funnies. This giftable hardcover book showcases hand-picked one-panel comics from the past twenty years and also includes an interview with the writer of THE LOCKHORNS, Bunny Hoest. The Lockhorns gently (and sometimes sharply) pokes fun at the antics of Loretta and Leroy Lockhorn. The panel finds laughs in the foibles of both partners, but their snappy repartee and witty banter belies the couple’s deep love and commitment to one another. Readers recognize the dialogue and illustrations as completely relatable—a window into their own lives or the lives of their family and friends. No matter what problems come their way, through thick and thin, through couples counseling and trips to the bar (for Leroy) or the mall (for Loretta), the pair realizes that they’re together “’til death do us part.” And they wouldn’t have it any other way!

The Six Myths We Live By - Karuna Cayton
Buddhist wisdom for everyday problems rooted in Buddhist philosophy and meditation, Six Myths We Live By shows us how to uncover our misperceptions and leads us on a path to self-development.The truth is you probably believe all sorts of myths, but you don’t even know it. To escape any hardship, any suffering or discomfort, we all believe myths about how the world works and how we live in that world. In Six Myths We Live By, therapist and long-time Buddhist practitioner Karuna Cayton guides us through six common myths that may give us comfort, but actually only perpetuate our problems: the myth of reality; the myth of identity; the myth of permanence; the myth of randomness; the myth of happiness; the myth of only living once. Cayton takes us through each of these myths using real-world examples and draws upon Buddhist principles, philosophy, psychology, and meditation practices to show how we can wake up to reality. By planting a seed of doubt about the beliefs that we’ve always thought were true, we can open our eyes and deepen our relationship with the way we see our life, our potential, and the nature of our struggles and achievements.

The Upswing: How We Came Together a Century Ago and How We Can Do It Again (1800750374)
Kniha - autor Robert D. Putnam; Shaylyn Romney Garrett, 448 stran, anglicky, brožovaná bez přebalu matná From the author of Bowling Alone and Our Kids, a “sweeping yet remarkably accessible” (The Wall Street Journal) analysis that “offers superb, often counterintuitive insights” (The New York Times) to demonstrate how we have gone from an individualistic “I” society to a more communitarian “We” society and then back again, and how we can learn from that experience to become a stronger more unified nation. Deep and accelerating inequality; unprecedented political polarization; vitriolic public discourse; a fraying social fabric; public and private narcissism—Americans today seem to agree on only one thing: This is the worst of times. But we’ve been here before. During the Gilded Age of the late 1800s, America was highly individualistic, starkly unequal, fiercely polarized, and deeply fragmented, just as it is today. However as the twentieth century opened,...

A Human History of Emotion : How the Way We Feel Built the World We Know
A sweeping exploration of the ways in which emotions shaped the course of human history, and how our experience and understanding of emotions have evolved along with us. Eye-opening and thought-provoking!” (Gina Rippon, author of The Gendered Brain) We humans like to think of ourselves as rational creatures, who, as a species, have relied on calculation and intellect to survive. But many of the most important moments in our history had little to do with cold, hard facts and a lot to do with feelings. Events ranging from the origins of philosophy to the birth of the world’s major religions, the fall of Rome, the Scientific Revolution, and some of the bloodiest wars that humanity has ever experienced can’t be properly understood without understanding emotions.Drawing on psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, art, and religious history, Richard Firth-Godbehere takes readers on a fascinating and wide ranging tour of the central and often under-appreciated role emotions have played in human societies around the world and throughout history—from Ancient Greece to Gambia, Japan, the Ottoman Empire, the United States, and beyond. A Human History of Emotion vividly illustrates how our understanding and experience of emotions has changed over time, and how our beliefs about feelings—and our feelings themselves—profoundly shaped us and the world we inhabit.

Someday I
This toolbox full of tips and games accompanies the picturebook, Someday I ll Be a Queen, which incorporates all the rules of chess. Teachers, parents, grandparents, and chess coaches learn how to build it up step by step. The message is, have fun! Enjoy the book and the game together. Take your time. Don t go through the book all at once but learn pieceto piece after which you rehearse the chess piece. I work with small groups of 6 to 8 children for a maximum of30 minutes at a time. With the four-year-olds, I explain about the king andafter that, we play four different games. During the last game, before theylearn to move the rook, I put a car on the chess board. Every toddlerknows not to stand in the street when a car approaches. So they have to movetheir king to safety each time. Actually, they are already lifting checkwithout realizing it.The hardest thing for experienced and trained chess playersis to apply the game in such a way that you think at the toddler s level. Makeit very simple. Don t overwhelm them with too many rules at once. Tackle itplayfully using the language of their environment.

The World as We Know It - Peter Dear
From the award-winning author of Revolutionizing the Sciences, a monumental historical account of how we came to see the world through the lens of scienceScience is the basis of our assumptions about ourselves and our world, from ideas about our evolutionary past to our conceptions of the vast expanses of space and the smallest particles of matter. In this panoramic book, acclaimed historian of science Peter Dear uncovers the roots of such beliefs, revealing how they constitute a natural philosophy that has been developed and refined over the course of centuriesâ ”and how the world as we have come to know it was by no means inevitable. In a sweeping, multifaceted narrative, Dear describes some of the most breathtaking accomplishments in the advance of human knowledge, such as Isaac Newtonâ ™s laws of motion and gravitation, Carl Linnaeusâ ™s taxonomy, Antoine Lavoisierâ ™s new chemistry, Charles Darwinâ ™s theory of evolution, and Albert Einsteinâ ™s theories of relativity. Challenging the notion that science is only about â œmaking discoveries,â he shows how our world has been formed by people, institutions, and cultural assumptions, giving rise to disciplines ranging from biology and astrophysics to electromagnetism and the social sciences. Taking readers from the early eighteenth century to today, The World as We Know It reveals how our ideas about our place in the universe were bequeathed to us by individuals, cultures, and a curiosity that knows no bounds.

In The Man Who Changed the Way We Read, Jeremy Lewis brings this extraordinary era brilliantly to life. Laneâ ™s books gave millions of people access to what had previously been the preserve of a wealthy few; they alerted the public to the threat of Nazi Germany; and Penguin itself became a cherished national institution, much like the BBC and the NHS, whilst at the same time challenging the status quo through the famous Lady Chatterley case. This is the spellbinding story of how a complex, highly fallible man used his vision to change the world. Rakish and racy . . . tells the story not just of a man, or even a firm, but of a cultural makeover that shaped the world as we know it DAILY TELEGRAPH

We Were Not The Savages, First Nations History - Daniel N.¿ Paul
The title of this book We Were Not the Savages speaks to the truth of what happened when Europeans invaded Mi kmaw lands in the 17th century. Prior to the European invasion the Mi kmaq lived healthy lives and for thousands of years lived harmoniously with nature in the land they called Mi kma ki. This book sets the record straight. When the Europeans arrived, they were welcomed and sustained by the Mi kmaq. After they became well established, over the next three centuries, they turned on the Mi kmaq; their language, culture and their way of life was systematically ravaged by the newcomers to whom they had extended human kindness. The murderous savagery of white supremacist policies that begot residential schools, Indian reserves, scalping proclamations, etc., all but wiped out the Mi kmaw people. Yet the Mi kmaq survived and today stand defending the land, the water and nature s bounty from the European way of life, which threatens the natural world we live in and need to survive. Since the first edition was published in 1993, Daniel Paul s ongoing research puts the lie to the mainstream record of Canadian settler colonialism and reveals that the mistreatment of Indigenous Peoples throughout the Americas is not confined to the past. In this 4th edition the author shares his research, which catalogues not only the historical tragedy but the ongoing attempts to silence the Mi kmaq and other Indigenous Peoples. Paul s work continues to give the Mi kmaw people a voice that must be heard. It is a guiding light in a dark world.

The Way We Live Now - Anthony Trollope
With an Introduction and Notes by Peter Merchant. Canterbury Christ Church College. The tough-mindedness of the social satire in and its air of palpable integrity give this novel a special place in Anthony Trollope s Literary career. Trollope paints a picture as panoramic as his title promises, of the life of 1870s London, the loves of those drawn to and through the city, and the career of Augustus Melmotte. Melmotte is one of the Victorian novel s greatest and strangest creations, and is an achievement undimmed by the passage of time.Trollope s Now might, in the twenty-first century, look like some distant disenchanted Then , but this is still the yesterday which we must understand in order to make proper sense of our today.

MATT HAIG__________ If you have anxiety, this book is for you.If you love someone who is anxious, this book is for you.I Quit Sugar founder and New York Times bestselling author Sarah Wilson has lived through high anxiety - including bipolar, OCD and several suicide attempts - her whole life. Perhaps like you, she grew tired of seeing anxiety as a disease that must be medicated into submission. Could anxiety be re-sewn, she asked, into a thing of beauty? So began a seven-year journey to find a more meaningful and helpful take on anxiety. Living out of two suitcases, Sarah travelled the world, meeting with His Holiness The Dalai Lama, with Oprah s life coach, with major mental health organizations and hundreds of others in a quest to unravel the knotted ball of wool that is the anxious condition. She emerged with the very best philosophy, science and hacks for thriving with the beast.First, We Make the Beast Beautiful is a book with a big heart, paving the way for richer, kinder and wiser conversations about anxiety.__________ Probably the best book on living with anxiety that I ve ever read. The Jimmy Greaves We Knew - Mike Donovan
The Jimmy Greaves We Knew celebrates the life and career of a national treasure through the memories of friends, family, team-mates, the media and fans. They recall a goalscoring great, a TV celebrity - most notably as one half of the legendary Saint and Greavsie - a newspaper columnist, comedian and raconteur who battled alcohol addiction. The modern game also pays tribute to this charismatic, friendly, down-to-earth, witty individual who built a reputation for hitting the back of the net playing for Chelsea, AC Milan, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and England. Greaves set a European record of 357 goals in 516 top-flight games and netted 44 in 57 full international appearances. Tragically, Greaves suffered a stroke in 2015 and died on 19 September 2021, when two of his former clubs, Spurs and Chelsea - plus 60,000 fans - gave him a minute s applause before they played each other at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The love and affection is as strong as ever.

The Cult of We - Eliot Brown, Maureen Farrell
⠘An amazing portrait of how grifters came to be called visionaries and high finance lost its mind.⠙ Charles Duhigg, bestselling author of The Power of HabitThe definitive inside story of WeWork, its audacious founder, and the company s epic unravelling from the journalists who first broke the story wide open.In 2001, Adam Neumann arrived in New York after five years as a conscript in the Israeli navy. Just over fifteen years later, he had transformed himself into the charismatic CEO of a company worth $47 billion. With his long hair and feel-good mantras, the six-foot-five Neumann looked the part of a messianic Silicon Valley entrepreneur. The vision he offered was mesmerizing: a radical reimagining of work space for a new generation. He called it WeWork. As billions of funding dollars poured in, Neumann s ambitions grew limitless. WeWork wasn t just an office space provider; it would build schools, create cities, even colonize Mars. In pursuit of its founder⠙s vision, the company spent money faster than it could bring it in. From his private jet, sometimes clouded with marijuana smoke, the CEO scoured the globe for more capital but in late 2019, just weeks before WeWork s highly publicized IPO, everything fell apart. Neumann was ousted from his company, but still was poised to walk away a billionaire.Calling to mind the recent demise of Theranos and the hubris of the dotcom era bust, WeWork s extraordinary rise and staggering implosion were fueled by disparate characters in a financial system blind to its risks. Why did some of the biggest names in banking and venture capital buy the hype? And what does the future hold for Silicon Valley ⠘unicorns⠙? Wall Street Journal reporters Eliot Brown and Maureen Farrell explore these questions in this definitive, rollicking account of WeWork s boom and bust.

Why We Teach Science - John L. Rudolph
Few people question the importance of science education in American schooling. The public readily accepts that it is the key to economic growth through innovation, develops the ability to reason more effectively, and enables us to solve the everyday problems we encounter through knowing how the world works. Good science teaching results in all these benefits and more -- or so we think. But what if all this is simply wrong? What if the benefits we assume science education produces turn out to be an illusion, nothing more than wishful thinking? In Why We Teach Science (and Why We Should), former high school teacher and historian of science education John L. Rudolph examines the reasons we ve long given for teaching science and assesses how they hold up to what we know about what students really learn (or don t learn) in science classrooms and what research tells us about how people actually interact with science in their daily lives. The results will surprise you. Instead of more and more rigorous traditional science education to fill the STEM pipeline, Rudolph challenges us to think outside the box and makes the case for an expansive science education aimed instead at rebuilding trust between science and the public -- something we desperately need in our current era of impending natural challenges and science denial.

We Were There - Lanre Bakare
We Were There is about a Black Britain that for too long has been unknown and unexplored â “ the one that exists beyond London. A vital corrective that enhances our understanding of black British history STEVE MCQUEEN Utterly brilliant DIPO FALOYIN Captivated me from the first page PRAGYA AGARWAL Essential reading EKOW ESHUNFrom the late 1970s to the early 1990s Britain was in tumult: rocked by Margaret Thatcherâ ™s radical economic policy, the rise of the National Front, widespread civil unrest. With anti-immigration policies in the political mainstream, Black lives were on the frontline of a racial reckoning. But it was also a time of unrivalled Black cultural creation, organising and resistance. This was the crucible in which modern Britain came into existence. We Were There brings into the spotlight for the first time extraordinary Black lives in once-rich cities now home to failing industries: the foundries of Birmingham, the docks of Liverpool and Cardiff, the mills of Bradford. We are in Wigan, Wolverhampton, Manchester and the green expanse of the British countryside. We meet feminists and Rastafarians, academics and pan-Africanists, environmental campaigners and rugby-league superstars; witness landmark campaigns against miscarriages of justice; encounter radical groups of artists and pioneering thinkers; tread dancefloors that hosted Northern Soul all-nighters and the birth of Acid House.Together, these voices and stories rewrite our idea of Black British culture. London was only ever part of the picture â “ We Were There is about incorporating a vastly broader range of Black Britons into the fabric of our national story.Alive with energy and purpose, We Were There decisively expands our sense of who we are. Confronting, joyful and thrilling, this is a profoundly important new portrait of modern Britain.

How We Age - Coleen T. Murphy
How recent breakthroughs in longevity research offer clues about human agingAll of us would like to live longer, or to slow the debilitating effects of age. In How We Age, Coleen Murphy shows how recent research on longevity and aging may be bringing us closer to this goal. Murphy, a leading scholar of aging, explains that the study of model systems, particularly simple invertebrate animals, combined with breakthroughs in genomic methods, have allowed scientists to probe the molecular mechanisms of longevity and aging. Understanding the fundamental biological rules that govern aging in model systems provides clues about how we might slow human aging, which could lead in turn to new therapeutics and treatments for age-related disease. Among other vivid examples, Murphy describes research that shows how changing a single gene in the nematode worm C. elegans doubles its lifespan, extending not only the end of life but also the youthful, healthy part of life. Drawing on work in her own lab as well as other recent research, Murphy chronicles the history and current state of the field, explaining longevityâ ™s links to reproduction and mating, sensory and cognitive function, inheritances from our ancestors, and the gut microbiome. Written with clarity and wit, How We Age provides a guide to the science: what we know about aging, how we know what we know, and what we can do with this new knowledge.

Discover a Better Standard of ExcellenceYou re not good enough. How many of us internalize this belief before we even reach adulthood? How many of us feel unworthy and unable to live up to what seem like impossible-yet-completely-arbitrary standards? Where do these toxic beliefs about ourselves come from? And who told us there is a way we are supposed to be anyway? With passion and compassion, Caroline J. Sumlin reveals the force that keeps all of us, whether we are part of a marginalized group or not, from freely expressing who we are as image bearers of God: white supremacy culture. Sharing her own story, she helps you see the wide-ranging effects of living in a culture of white supremacy. She identifies the damaging beliefs we internalize from our very earliest days and shows us how to find clarity and freedom as we dismantle the oppressive structures that hem us in and force us to conform. If you have struggled with perfectionism, self-doubt, unworthiness, or the unrelenting pressure to pursue someone else s version of success, you will find here the tools you need to silence the voices that seek to keep you down and to value yourself as never before.
