The Home We Build Together - Sir Jonathan Sacks

Rabbi Sacks'' thesis on the future of British society and the dangers facing liberal democracy. With a new foreword by Daniel Finkelstein.Arguing that global communications have fragmented national cultures and that multiculturalism, intended to reduce social frictions, is today reinforcing them, Sacks argues for a new approach to national identity, making the case for "integrated diversity" within a framework of shared political values.Britain, he argues, will have to construct a national narrative as a basis for identity, reinvigorate the concept of the common good, and identify shared interests among currently conflicting groups. It must restore a culture of civility, protect "neutral spaces" from politicization, and find ways of moving beyond an adversarial culture in which the loudest voice wins. He argues for a responsibility- rather than rights-based model of citizenship that connects the ideas of giving and belonging.Offering a new paradigm to replace previous models of assimilation on the one hand, multiculturalism on the other, he argues that we should see society as "the home we build together", bringing the distinctive gifts of different groups to the common good. Sacks warns of the hazards free and open societies face in the twenty-first century, and offers an unusual religious defence of liberal democracy and the nation state.

We Go to the Park - Sara Stridsberg

We Go to the Park is a beautiful, lyrical meditation on going to the park to play—which extends into a reflection on life itself—from Booker Prize-longlisted author Sara Stridsberg, and the inimitable, award-winning illustrator Beatrice Alemagna!Translated from Swedish by B.J. WoodsteinA Kirkus Best YA Book of 2024One of Maria Popova’s Marginalian Favorites of 2024Selected for the USBBY Outstanding International Book List, 2025 The park beckons us to leave our daily routines behind and enter its zone of endless possibility. In the park, the usual rules don’t apply. In the park, what matters most is the moment, and losing track of time to the timelessness of imagination, invention, observation, and chance. In the park, there are risks, of course, but also the deepest rewards, to be found in the freedom experienced through play that is both embodied and participatory. It is not the lone “I,” but the “we” that goes to the park, where chance encounters might suddenly become moments of deep connection—however fleeting—with others, nature, and ourselves. Originally published in Sweden, this first English–language edition printed in Italy on thick cream paper offers an immersive experience of transformation, longing, and transcendence to readers of all ages, while reminding adult readers in particular of the everyday miracle contained in encountering another consciousness.

The Experience Machine - Andy Clark

For as long as we've studied the mind, we've believed that information flowing from our senses determines what our mind perceives. But as our understanding has advanced in the last few decades, a hugely powerful new view has flipped this assumption on its head. The brain is not a passive receiver, but an ever-active predictor. At the forefront of this cognitive revolution is widely acclaimed philosopher and cognitive scientist Andy Clark, who has synthesized his ground-breaking work on the predictive brain to explore its fascinating mechanics and implications. Among the most stunning of these is the realization that experience itself, because it is guided by prior expectation, is a kind of controlled hallucination. We don't passively take in the world around us; instead our mind is constantly making and refining predictions about what we expect to see. This even applies to our bodies, as the way we experience pain and other states is shaped by our expectations, and this has broader implications for the understanding and treatment of conditions from PTSD to schizophrenia to medically unexplained symptoms. From the most mundane experiences to the most sublime, it is our predictions that sculpt our experience. A landmark study of cognitive science, The Experience Machine lays out the extraordinary explanatory power of the predictive brain for our lives, mental health and society.

And yet, while our kids still need us—in some ways, more than ever—this stage can also be an opportunity for personal transformation.Author Meagan Francis understands the mixed feelings that come along with this stage. As a mom of five kids ages teen to young adult, she’s been blogging and podcasting about motherhood for more than twenty-five years while going from five kids under her roof to just one. In The Last Parenting Book You''ll Ever Read, Francis will take you by the hand and lead you through the final stage of “active” parenting, as your teenagers prepare to step into the world…and you explore what it means to step back into yourself. The Last Parenting Book You’ll Ever Read is about coming to terms with the many endings that moms of teenagers experience—but more than that, it’s about all the new beginnings on the horizon, and how moms can still hold their families close while letting them go. With compassion for the big feelings that accompany big transitions, Francis helps readers harness some of the mothering energy they’ve been directing toward their children and redirect it back toward nurturing themselves.

The Nature of Fashion - Carry Somers

"One of our favorite reads of 2025." Dressed: History of Fashion Podcast Named one of the best fashion books of 2025 by Fashionista If plants have shaped fashion’s past, couldn’t they hold the secret to its future? Vivid, celebratory, impassioned and angry, The Nature of Fashion is an epic sweep through the history of how we learned to create clothing with plants, revealing how textiles have transformed the human world and our natural landscape. More than just a story about plant-based fashion, The Nature of Fashion chronicles the plant stewards, obsessives, innovators and profiteers who have shaped what we wear. It is about the clash of worlds, voracious exploitation and silenced voices; about devotion, passion, blindness, idealism, greed and how clothing has separated us from nature. Told through intimate vignettes into this past, each person, people group, plant and place is a thread in the fabric of the book, forging connections across place and time. And like weaving, as the story strands weave in and out, the pattern slowly emerges. As the centuries unfold, we meet plants from every continent and understand the human stories of origin, culture and community. We see people and countries interact through trade, conflict, human and land exploitation and the age-old struggle for riches and power. The stories of yesterday find their echoes in today. In every culture and every place, each plant is part of an ecosystem, and we see how the choices we once made shape landscapes and economies today. Amidst human folly shine strands of hope and resilience, cultures that have maintained their textile traditions, human artistry that works in rhythm with the natural world and innovators who are finding new ways to produce fibres and dyes. For thousands of years our clothes have been made by working with nature, not against it. Fashion is at a turning point – to look forward, we need to look back.

The Significance of Souness - Tom Miller

In 1986 Rangers FC appointed Graeme Souness as Player Manager, in a bold and imaginative move that rocked the world of football. Prior to his tenure, Rangers FC had not won the league title since 1978. Graeme Souness won the title in his first season in charge, and it was to change just about everything at Rangers FC for the next decade. Rangers FC had failed to win the Scottish league title since 1978 with Celtic, Aberdeen and even Dundee United being the dominant forces of the period. The Dons under Alex Ferguson and the Tannadice side, with Jim McLean at the helm, were seriously making their mark in European competition too. With need for action, Rangers FC turned to Souness, who was playing in Italy with Sampdoria at the time, giving him a clear mandate, and substantial funds, to transform the sleeping giant. The move clearly captured the imagination of the fans and the immediate demand for season tickets was overwhelming.40 years on, we take a deep dive into this crucial period in the history of Rangers FC and remember the dramatic events, both on the field and in the boardroom, with key input from many Rangers heroes of that era, including Terry Butcher, Ally McCoist, Ian Durrant and John Brown. We will also recall the reactions of opponents in those days with Alex McLeish, Craig Levein and so many more.We go behind the scenes to bring you details and events that have not really been covered before in a fascinating story with a Scottish footballing icon, Souness himself, at the heart of it! With a foreword by iconic Rangers FC Captain Richard Gough.'I could have gone to Man Utd., but when Souness trapped up at Ibrox, there was only one destination for me!' - Ian Ferguson

Cult of the Dead Cow - Joseph Menn

The Cult of the Dead Cow is the story of the oldest, most respected and most famous hacking group of all time. Its members invented the the concept of hacktivism, released both the top tool for cracking passwords and the reigning technique for controlling computers from afar, and spurred development of Snowden''s anonymity tool of choice. With its origins in the earliest days of the Internet, the cDc is full of oddball characters--spies, activists, musicians, and politicians--who are now woven into the top ranks of the American establishment. Today, this small group and their followers represent the best hope for making technology a force for good instead of for surveillance and oppression. Like a modern (and real) illuminati, cDc members have had the ears of presidents, secretaries of defense, and the CEO of Google. The Cult of the Dead Cow shows how we got into the mess we find ourselves in today, where governments and corporations hold immense power over individuals, and and how we are finally fighting back.

Apothecary for the Afflicted - Dr. Melissa Kim Corter

Apothecary for the Afflicted is a unique and transformative tool disguised as a book. The pages are filled with rich and potent shadow-work practices to uncover the authentic self while healing invisible wounds. Throughout the book, the reader encounters hauntingly beautiful imagery blended with the symbolism of fairy tales. The shadow speaks symbolically because it is beneath our conscious awareness. Therefore, we all have psychological blind spots. The Apothecary for the Afflicted is designed to creatively reveal these blind spots through shadow work practices rooted in the Jungian tradition. In this book, Melissa teaches you about the shadow, how to work with it, and the importance of facing inner darkness. As you work with the materials, you will discover supportive shadow-work practice to soften resistance when difficult emotions, feelings, and sensations rise to the surface. Shadow work involves the transmutation of stuck energy and transformation of repressed feelings. We must confront the things we ignore. There is power hidden in the places we are afraid to look. Within the shadow, the energy remains in limbo, and like a ghost, it eventually begins to haunt us . . . until we face it. To transmute darkness, we must turn our attention toward the many faces of the shadow. We can find the shadow mirrored in our dreams, triggering behaviors, emotional reactions, and qualities we refuse to see within ourselves. We all need a guide to walk with us through dark times, to navigate the unknown and uncover our blind spots. We need someone who can see in the dark. That person is Jungian and depth psychologist Melissa Kim Corter, and this book is your guide. The Apothecary for the Afflicted is a book you will return to time and time again to confront darkness, heal invisible wounds, and reclaim lost parts of the soul.

The Making of Home - Judith Flanders

The idea that ''home'' is a special place, a separate place, a place where we can be our true selves, is so obvious to us today that we barely pause to think about it. But, as Judith Flanders shows in this revealing book, ''home'' is a relatively new concept. When in 1900 Dorothy assured the citizens of Oz that ''There is no place like home'', she was expressing a view that was a culmination of 300 years of economic, physical and emotional change. In The Making of Home, Flanders traces the evolution of the house across northern Europe and America from the sixteenth to the early twentieth century, and paints a striking picture of how the homes we know today differ from homes through history. The transformation of houses into homes, she argues, was not a private matter, but an essential ingredient in the rise of capitalism and the birth of the Industrial Revolution. Without ''home'', the modern world as we know it would not exist, and as Flanders charts the development of ordinary household objects - from cutlery, chairs and curtains, to fitted kitchens, plumbing and windows - she also peels back the myths that surround some of our most basic assumptions, including our entire notion of what it is that makes a family. As full of fascinating detail as her previous bestsellers, The Making of Home is also a book teeming with original and provocative ideas.

Continuity and Discontinuities of Religious Memory in the Czech Republic - Dušan Lužný, Jan Váně, František Kalvas, Veronika Hásová

This publication has several modest goals: We shall describe how we conceptualised religious memory for the purposes of qualitative and quantitative survey research, and we shall explain how we operationalised religious communicative and cultural memory and why we believe that the questionnaire we designed and present here can also be applied in other contexts outside Czech society. Given the volume of data we obtained, we want to present at least a portion of our results and show what types of findings were achieved through our conceptualisation and operationalisation of religious memory. Finally, we want to present non-Czech-speaking readers with a comprehensive work describing changes in religiosity in Czech society, in this case from the perspective of memory studies. In other words, we want to offer an international audience a piece of work broader than just a journal article focusing on the study of religion in the Czech Republic.
