Ilustrované vydání jednoho z nejoriginálnějších a nejzábavnějších románů 19. století, který nemá v dějinách literatury obdoby, v kongeniálním překladu Hanuše Karlacha a s ilustracemi Michaila Gavričkova. Hoffmannovy Životní názory kocoura Moura, považované za vrchol autorovy tvorby a stěžejní opus pozdní německé romantiky, spatřily světlo světa již před dvěma sty lety, ale plného uznání, ocenění, ba nadšeného přijetí se dočkaly až ve 20. století. E. T. A. Hoffmann totiž předběhl svou dobu a stvořil dílo, které je svou formou a důmyslnou kompozicí vskutku ojedinělé: sám Hoffmann v něm vystupuje jako vydavatel, jenž vyhověl přání svého přítele a rozhodl se knižně vydat memoáry jistého „mladého autora skvělého nadání“, jímž je ve skutečnosti kocour, který si říká Mour. Záhy se ovšem ukáže, že učený kocour do svého rukopisu omylem zamíchal stránky z jiného textu, který objevil u svého pána, a sice z knihy pojednávající o životě geniálního skladatele a kapelníka Johanna Kreislera. Tyto stránky, které kocour používal dílem jako podložku, dílem jako piják, byly nedopatřením rovněž vytištěny, a tak se ve výsledné podobě díla jakoby omylem prolínají dvě nezávislé dějové linie – satiricky vyznívající autobiografie poněkud samolibého kocoura-literáta a tajuplný příběh, přesněji řečeno fragmenty příběhu, výstředního romantického hrdi¬ny-umělce Johanna Kreislera vystaveného všemožným protivenstvím. Životní názory kocoura Moura jsou tedy polyfonním dílem, svou výstavbou připomínajícím princip hudebního kontrapunktu. Zdánlivě nesouvisející příběhy se totiž ve skutečnosti doplňují, prostupují, jeden v druhém se zrcadlí a vzájemně osvětlují. Právě prolínání obou příběhů činí z četby tohoto „dvojrománu“ nevšední čtenářský požitek. Řečeno slovy překladatele Hanuše Karlacha: „Tyto posuny, zrcadlení, přeskoky jsou zdrojem humoru, který má mnoho poloh, od laskavé úsměvnosti přes ironickou jízlivost až k satirické hořkosti; který však, a to je pro nás podstatné, se realizuje až ve čtenářově mysli, čtenářovou imaginací, která teprve dotváří dílo v komplementární celek a se kterou spisovatel zcela záměrně takto počítá. Kniha nabízí výklad kořenů této nestability s pomocí teoreticky původní a empiricky podložené historicko-sociologické srovnávací analýzy. Zatímco ve výkladech vývoje post-koloniálního Blízkého východu dosud dominovaly dvě protichůdné teze – jde o region zaostalý, neměnný a rigidní, nebo naopak proměňující se až příliš rychle – kniha nabízí alternativní perspektivu vycházející z vysoce nerovnoměrného a nesynchronizovaného tempa změn v jednotlivých dimenzích blízkovýchodní modernizace. Dochází zde totiž k (1) rychlé socio-demografické změně (razantní růst populace a podílu mládeže, prudká urbanizace, expanze médií a vzdělanosti), (2) pomalejší, nestabilní a zaostávající změně ekonomické (závislost na exportu ropy, vysoká nezaměstnanost) a (3) pomalé až regresivní změně politické (eroze schopnosti států vládnout, absence demokratizace i liberalizace). Teoretický model studie je vybudován s pomocí kritického čtení teorií modernizace a koncepce rozmanitých modernit, která umožňuje zohlednit také širší kulturně-náboženský a mezinárodně-politický kontext blízkovýchodní nerovnoměrné modernizace. Teoretický model je poté empiricky testován s pomocí časových řad (1960-2010) několika desítek indikátorů, které pokrývají demografickou, sociální, ekonomickou i politickou dimenzi modernizačního procesu. To autorovi umožňuje provádět čtyři typy komparací míry nerovnoměrnosti blízkovýchodní post-koloniální modernizace: (1) blízkovýchodní modernizace a modernizace v dalších post-koloniálních makro-regionech, (2) nerovnoměrnosti jednotlivých fází samotné blízkovýchodní modernizace, (3) jednotlivých států uvnitř blízkovýchodního regionu s důrazem na vzájemné srovnání zemí arabských, (4) post-koloniální blízkovýchodní modernizace s ranou modernizací západoevropskou. Poslední krok analýz představuje přechod od makro-úrovně nerovnoměrné strukturální změny k mikro-úrovni sociálních a politických aktérů a jejich jednání. Jejím výsledkem je identifikace více než padesáti dílčích kauzálních mechanismů, které ve strukturálním rámci nerovnoměrné modernizace generují politickou nestabilitu. Celkově se kniha nesoustředí, jak je často zvykem, na vnějškově sledovatelné politické aktéry a jejich souboje. Nýbrž na pod povrchem politického soupeření probíhající hluboké a dlouhodobé kumulativní demografické, sociální a ekonomické změny. Na změny, které neprobíhají pouze v jednotlivých zemích Blízkého východu, nýbrž jdou od konce 2. světové války napříč celým regionem a dnes ve svém souhrnu dávají vzniknout zcela novému Blízkému východu než byl ten, na který jsme byli dlouhá desetiletí zvyklí.

Biebl’s poetry and travels are also the book’s point of departure for a broader exploration of the intersections of travel and poetry, the attitudes to colonial/social injustice, and the representation of otherness in Czech literary and visual imagination, beyond Biebl’s times. In its attention to how poetic travel reflects the Czech historical experience in the shadow of imperial nations, the book moves scholarly reflection on literary travel, modernity, and colonialism to a new ground. Jan Mrázek grew up in Czechoslovakia and lives on an island in the Malay Archipelago. He is Associate Professor in Southeast Asian Studies at the National University of Singapore and has published widely on Indonesia, seafaring, and Czech travel writing.

Na případech 13 zemí zkoumá, na kolik Rusko skrze státem vlastněnou ruskou společnost Gazprom a její dceřiné společnosti jedná dle tzv. strategického přístupu k energetice, tj. zda tyto společnosti fungují jako nástroje ruské zahraniční politiky.
