Sonnets - William Shakespeare
Shakespeare’s Sonnets are among the most lyrical and moving pieces of poetry in any language, abounding with examples of his genius for wordplay, rhythm and metaphor and dealing with the eternal themes of love, memory, beauty and the ravishes of time. First published in 1609, after Shakespeare had written many of his most famous works, the Sonnets have been the subject of literary curiosity ever since, mainly concerning the identity of the two addressees, ‘Mr W.H.’ and the ‘Dark Lady’, and the light they could shine on Shakespeare’s life. This collection constitutes one of English literature’s most profound poetic meditations on life and love, and is a vital complement to the plays, offering clues to Shakespeare’s own biography. Presented here in an edition that makes them accessible to twentieth-century readers, these poems are worth returning to again and again.

The Sonnets and a Lover's Complaint - William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare is a global icon for his plays such as Hamlet, Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet, but his poetic meditations on love are among the most powerful and evocative poems ever written. This Penguin Classics edition of Sonnets and A Lover''s Complaint is edited by John Kerrigan.''Shall I compare thee to a summer''s day?''The language of Shakespeare''s sonnets has become inseparable from the language of love in English; but the force and tenderness of these poems is undiminished by age. When this volume of Shakespeare''s poems first appeared in 1609, he had already written most of the great plays that made him famous. The 154 sonnets - all but two of which are addressed to a beautiful young man, ''Mr W.H.'', or a treacherous ''dark lady'' - contain some of the most exquisite and haunting poetry ever written, and deal with eternal subjects such as love and infidelity, memory and mortality, and the destruction wreaked by Time. Also included is A Lover''s Complaint, originally published with the sonnets, in which a young woman is overheard lamenting her betrayal by a heartless seducer. In his illuminating introduction, John Kerrigan examines how the sonnets are intertwined, the ways in which these works ... The Poems and Sonnets of William Shakespeare - William Shakespeare
With an Introduction by Tim Cook.Shakespeare''s sonnets have an intensity of both feeling and meaning unmatched in English sonnet form. They divide into two parts; the first 126 sonnets are addressed to a fair youth for whom the poet has an obsessive love and the second chronicles his love for the notorious ''Dark Lady''.In addition to the sonnets, this volume includes Shakespeare''s two lengthy narrative poems on classical themes, The Rape of Lucrece which looks forward to the dark imagery of Macbeth, and Venus and Adonis which mixes ribaldry and tragedy in unique Shakespearean manner. The Phoenix and the Turtle is a beautiful metaphysical and allegorical short elegy, and takes its place with Shakespeare''s better-known poetry.

Shakespeare’s Sonnets, Retold - William Shakespeare, James Anthony
'James Anthony has done something I would have confidently stated to be impossible. He has "translated" Shakespeare’s sonnets and he has done so with an insolent, loveable charm … A dazzling success’ – Stephen FryRediscover the greatest love poetry ever writtenShall I compare you to a summer’s day? You’re more delightful, always shining strong;High winds blow hard on flowering buds in May,And summer never seems to last that long…Shakespeare’s sonnets are some of the nation’s favourite lines of verse, but the Elizabethan language can make it difficult to really understand them. Many guides offer to clarify the meaning, but lose the magic of the words by explaining them away. James Anthony has done something boldly different. He has rewritten the whole series of poems as sonnets using modern language, while retaining the rhythm and rhyme patterns that gives them such power. In doing so he breathes new life into the original poems and opens them up for a modern readership, demystifying Shakespeare’s eternal poetry with provocative new translations and delightful new lines. Presented as an attractive book with the original sonnets facing their new translations, this is a stunning collection of beautiful love poems, made new.

Reading Shakespeare's Sonnets - Don Paterson
Shakespeare''s Sonnets are as important and vital today as they were when first published four hundred years ago. Perhaps no collection of verse before or since has so captured the imagination of readers and lovers; certainly no poem has come under such intense critical scrutiny, and presented the reader with such a bewildering number of alternative interpretations. In this illuminating and often irreverent guide, Don Paterson offers a fresh and direct approach to the Sonnets, asking what they can still mean to the twenty-first century reader. In a series of fascinating and highly entertaining commentaries placed alongside the poems themselves, Don Paterson discusses the meaning, technique, hidden structure and feverish narrative of the Sonnets, as well as the difficulties they present for the modern reader. Most importantly, however, he looks at what they tell us about William Shakespeare the lover - and what they might still tell us about ourselves.

King John - William Shakespeare
King John - today remembered as the villainous opponent of Robin Hood and the Magna Carta - was for Shakespeare and his audience a heroic figure who stood up to England''s enemies. This Penguin Shakespeare edition is edited by R. L. Smallwood with an introduction by Eugene Giddens.''This England never did, nor never shall,Lie at the proud foot of a conqueror''Under the rule of King John, England is forced into war when the French challenge the legitimacy of John''s claim to the throne and determine to install his nephew Arthur in his place. But political principles, hypocritically flaunted, are soon forgotten, as the French and English kings form an alliance based on cynical self-interest. And as the desire to cling to power dominates England''s paranoid and weak-willed king, his country is threatened with disaster. This book contains a general introduction to Shakespeare''s life and Elizabethan theatre, a separate introduction to Richard II, a chronology, suggestions for further reading, an essay discussing performance options on both stage and screen, and a commentary. William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was born to John Shakespeare and Mary Arden in late April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. He wrote about 38 plays (the precise number is uncertain), many of ... The Tempest - William Shakespeare
The Wordsworth Classics' Shakespeare's Series presents a newly-edited sequence of William Shakespeare's works. The textual editing takes account of recent scholarship while giving the material a careful reappraisal. The Tempest is the most lyrical, profound and fascinating of Shakespeare's late comedies. Prospero, long exiled from Italy with his daughter Miranda, seeks to use his magical powers to defeat his former enemies. Eventually, having proved merciful, he divests himself of that magic, his `art', and prepares to return to the mainland. The Tempest has often been regarded as Shakespeare's `farewell to the stage' before his retirement. In the past, critics emphasised the romantically beautiful features of The Tempest, seeing it as an imaginative fantasia. In recent decades, however, The Tempest has also been treated as a potently political drama which offers controversial insights into colonialism and racism. Frequently staged and diversely filmed, the play has influenced numerous poets and novelists.

Othello - William Shakespeare
Edited, Introduced and Annotated by Cedric Watts, M.A., Ph.D., Emeritus Professor of English, University of Sussex. The Wordsworth Classics'' Shakespeare Series, with Henry V and The Merchant of Venice as its inaugral volumes, presents a newly-edited sequence of William Shakespeare''s works. The textual editing takes account of recent scholarship while giving the material a careful reappraisal.Othello has long been recognised as one of the most powerful of Shakespeare’s tragedies. This is an intense drama of love, deception, jealousy and destruction. Desdemona’s love for Othello, the Moor, transcends racial prejudice; but the envious Iago conspires to devastate their lives. In its vivid rendering of racism, sexism, contested identities, and the savagery lurking within civilisation, Othello is arguably the most topical and accessible tragedy from Shakespeare’s major phase as a dramatist. Productions on stage and screen regularly renew its power to engross, impress and trouble the imagination.

Henry V - William Shakespeare
Edited, introduced and annotated by Cedric Watts, M.A., Ph.D., Emeritus Professor of English, University of Sussex. The Wordsworth Classics'' Shakespeare Series, with Henry V as its inaugral volume, presents a newly-edited sequence of William Shakespeare''s works. The textual editing endeavours to take account of recent scholarship while giving the material a careful reappraisal.Henry V is the most famous and influential of Shakespeare''s history plays. Its powerful patriotic rhetoric has resounded down the ages, gaining eloquent expression in Laurence Olivier''s renowned film. Henry himself, astute and charismatic, who led his ‘band of brothers’ to victory in the Battle of Agincourt, could indeed seem to be ‘this star of England’. In recent decades the play has attracted increasing critical attention and is now highly controversial. Kenneth Branagh''s film-production reflected the changing valuation. Does this play have a sceptical sub-text which subverts its patriotism? Is Henry''s achievement beset by irony? Has current scepticism distorted a predominantly and proudly nationalistic drama? Henry V demonstrates Shakespeare''s acclaimed ability to bring new complexity to the material that he adapted, so that different eras may find within his work the familiar and the strange, the congenial and the harsh, the sustaining and the challenging.

The Comedy of Errors - William Shakespeare
One of the earliest of Shakespeare''s plays, The Comedy of Errors is a brief and genuinely farcical comedy, filled with knockabout humour, and the havoc wrought by mistaken identity. The play tells the story of two sets of identical twins, accidentally separated at birth. Antipholus and his servant, Dromio, both of Syracuse, arrive in Ephesus, where they encounter their twin brothers, Antipholus and his servant, Dromio, of Ephesus. When the Syracusan strangers meet the friends and families of their twins, they are subject to unjust beatings, a near-seduction, and arrest, as well as accusations of infidelity, theft, madness, and possession by demons. As well as the play itself, this edition contains:• An extended introduction that looks at the play''s history, its structure, and characters • A glossary of words and terms• Notes on the text • A timeline of William Shakespeare''s life and workABOUT THE SERIES: The Arcturus Shakespeare Editions series brings together many of Shakespeare''s celebrated plays and poetry, presented with striking contemporary cover designs. Richard III - William Shakespeare
Written in the early 1590s, Shakespeare''s version of the story of Richard III, more properly known as The Tragedy of Richard the Third, depicts events that happened more than a century before. The story is based on the unfinished History of Richard III by Sir Thomas More, writing as the Tudor dynasty was seeking to consolidate its position. Shakespeare portrays his usurping, hunchbacked Richard as truly villainous, with few redeeming features. Yet as he strives to consolidate power, he is a compelling and charismatic character, delivering some of Shakespeare''s most memorable lines. As well as the play itself, this edition contains: • An extended introduction that looks at the play''s history, its structure, and characters• A glossary of words and terms• Notes on the text • A timeline of William Shakespeare''s life and work

The textual editing takes account of recent scholarship while giving the material a careful reappraisal. The Merchant of Venice is one of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies, but it remains deeply controversial. The text may seem anti-Semitic; yet repeatedly, in performance, it has revealed a contrasting nature.Shylock, though vanquished in the law-court, often triumphs in the theatre. In his intensity he can dominatethe play, challenging abrasively its romantic and lyrical affirmations. What results is a bitter-sweet drama.Though The Merchant of Venice offers some of the traditional pleasures of romantic comedy, it also exposesthe operations of prejudice. Thus Shakespeare remains our contemporary.
