Shakespeareâ ™s Sonnets are among the most lyrical and moving pieces of poetry in any language, abounding with examples of his genius for wordplay, rhythm and metaphor and dealing with the eternal themes of love, memory, beauty and the ravishes of time. First published in 1609, after Shakespeare had written many of his most famous works, the Sonnets have been the subject of literary curiosity ever since, mainly concerning the identity of the two addressees, â ˜Mr W.H.â ™ and the â ˜Dark Ladyâ ™, and the light they could shine on Shakespeareâ ™s life. This collection constitutes one of English literatureâ ™s most profound poetic meditations on life and love, and is a vital complement to the plays, offering clues to Shakespeareâ ™s own biography. Presented here in an edition that makes them accessible to twentieth-century readers, these poems are worth returning to again and again.

The Tempest - William Shakespeare
The Wordsworth Classics Shakespeare s Series presents a newly-edited sequence of William Shakespeare s works. The textual editing takes account of recent scholarship while giving the material a careful reappraisal. The Tempest is the most lyrical, profound and fascinating of Shakespeare s late comedies. Prospero, long exiled from Italy with his daughter Miranda, seeks to use his magical powers to defeat his former enemies. Eventually, having proved merciful, he divests himself of that magic, his `art , and prepares to return to the mainland. The Tempest has often been regarded as Shakespeare s `farewell to the stage before his retirement. In the past, critics emphasised the romantically beautiful features of The Tempest, seeing it as an imaginative fantasia. In recent decades, however, The Tempest has also been treated as a potently political drama which offers controversial insights into colonialism and racism. Frequently staged and diversely filmed, the play has influenced numerous poets and novelists.

Edited, introduced and annotated by Cedric Watts, M.A., Ph.D., Emeritus Professor of English, University of Sussex. The Wordsworth Classics Shakespeare s Series presents a newly-edited sequence of William Shakespeare s works. The textual editing takes account of recent scholarship while giving the material a careful reappraisal. The Taming of the Shrew is one of the most famous and controversial of Shakespeareâ ™s comedies. The central relationship, in which Petruchio boisterously â ˜tamesâ ™ a rebellious Kate, has often appeared problematic. In the theatre, it has been treated in a diversity of ways, so that Kateâ ™s apparent capitulation varies between the ironic and the sincere. Feminists have been divided in their responses. The provocative vitality of this comedy has been transmitted by numerous adaptations for stage and screen, notably the film directed by Franco Zeffirelli and the Cole Porter musical, Kiss Me, Kate.

The Merchant of Venice - William Shakespeare
Edited, introduced and annotated by Cedric Watts, M.A., Ph.D., Emeritus Professor of English, University of Sussex. The Wordsworth Classicsâ ™ Shakespeare Series presents a newly-edited sequence of William Shakespeareâ ™s works. The textual editing takes account of recent scholarship while giving the material a careful reappraisal. The Merchant of Venice is one of Shakespeareâ ™s most popular comedies, but it remains deeply controversial. The text may seem anti-Semitic; yet repeatedly, in performance, it has revealed a contrasting nature.Shylock, though vanquished in the law-court, often triumphs in the theatre. In his intensity he can dominatethe play, challenging abrasively its romantic and lyrical affirmations. What results is a bitter-sweet drama.Though The Merchant of Venice offers some of the traditional pleasures of romantic comedy, it also exposesthe operations of prejudice. Thus Shakespeare remains our contemporary.

The Two Noble Kinsmen: The Oxford Shakespeare - William Shakespeare, Fletcher John
The Royal Shakespeare Company s choice of The Two Noble Kinsmen to open the Swan Theatre in 1986 demonstrated that this long-neglected play has at last come into its own as a stageworthy, humorous, and moving dramatization of the conflicting claims of love and friendship. It was first published in 1634 as `by the memorable worthies of their time, Mr John Fletcher, and Mr William Shakespeare, Gent and was probably first performed soon after the wedding of Princess Elizabeth, daughter of the company s patron James I, to the Elector Palatine in February 1613. The exceptionally full introduction to this edition explains the relevance to the play of ideas of chivalry and of the classical idea of friendship. The edition (which is illuminatingly illustrated) also offers a discussion of the centuries-long debate about the play s authorship and a clarification of its stage action.

The Merry Wives of Windsor - William Shakespeare
Here will be an old abusing of God s patience and the King s English. The Merry Wives of Windsor is the only Shakespeare play named entirely after female characters and his only comedy set in England. These features underscore some of its most immediately appealing qualities -- its contemporary realism; its depiction of everyday life; its interest in status and gender; and the language and physicality of its comedy. This edition s introduction focuses on these elements of Merry Wives, setting out their historical contexts but also thinking about what they offer audiences and readers today. It addresses the place of the play within Shakespeare s career and canon and the enduringly popular figure of Falstaff, before thinking about its generic peculiarities as a mixture of city comedy and domestic comedy. The edition gives readers a rich breadth of historical context and real-life examples through which to understand and appreciate the text. It also addresses Merry Wives s popular and scholarly reception, to give students, performers, and readers an array of topics, angles, and approaches with which to engage with one of the canon s most lively and life-like plays.
