Před rokem 1592 se Shakespeare připojil ke kočovným divadelníkům. Roku 1592 přišel do Londýna, kde hrál v různých divadelních společnostech. Stal se také spolumajitelem divadla. V letech 1593 až 1594 ale byla londýnská divadla zavřena kvůli epidemii moru. Shakespeare psal poezii pod ochranou hraběte Southamptonstého. Po této epidemii se stal členem nové divadelní společnosti Služebníci lorda komořího (Lord Chamberlain s Men), kde půspbil jako herec a dramatik.
