Slovanská knihovna v Praze byla založena roku 1924 ministerstvem zahraničních věcí. Měla vytvářet informační zázemí pro souběžně vznikající Slovanský ústav a současně shromažďovat a zpřístupňovat dokumenty pro podporu činnosti mnohonárodnostní uprchlické vlny z bývalého Ruského impéria, jejíž významná část nalezla útočiště v tehdejším Československu. Od roku 1958 je součástí dnešní Národní knihovny České republiky. Díky rozsahu a složení svého fondu je jedním z center slavistické vědní disciplíny, a to v mezinárodním měřítku. Kniha přináší podrobné zpracování dějin Slovanské knihovny v průběhu celého uplynulého století. Současně čtenáři představuje jednotlivé části knihovní sbírky, jejich budování a nejcennější dokumenty. Kromě standardních knižních, časopiseckých a novinových oddělení se zaměřuje i na sbírky historické, rukopisné a kartografické. Do samostatné kapitoly je vydělena tematika ruské, ukrajinské a běloruské emigrace po roce 1917, neboť pro studium tohoto tématu spravuje knihovna sbírku světového významu. Pozornost je věnována také speciálním sbírkám, kam se řadí kolekce listinných, obrazových, uměleckých, fotografických a notafilických materiálů. Popis poskytovaných služeb pak přináší praktické informace o fungováni knihovny, které uvítá každý zájemce o studium a využívání knihovních služeb. Kniha byla připravena ke stému výročí ustavení knihovny.
