Now, as it s bearer, Domek wields its power, but the wisp, known for leading travellers to their deaths, will not be so easily controlled. After discovering a conspiracy amongst the pijavice that could see them unleash terror on the daylight world, Domek finds himself in a race against those who aim to twist alchemical science for their own dangerous gain.In the quiet streets of Prague all manner of otherworldly creatures lurk in the shadows. The Vedute of Prague - Roman Koucký

„Book „The Vedute of Prague“ describes the development of Prague cityscape in the period of last 5 centuries and emphasizes future possible scenarios how the city composition could be continuously developed in the 21st century,“ comments the content of the book Roman Koucký, the co-author of the book and the chief of the Metropolitan plan office, that prepares new urban plan of Prague, called Metropolitan plan. The overall visual composition of the city forms a significant part of its identity and the collective mental “city image”. The layered and diverse composition of the city “from medieval times up to now” is, as emphasized in the book’s first chapter, the reason for Prague’s inscription in the prestigious UNESCO Register of World Cultural Heritage. The second chapter describes how it is not only possible but indeed necessary to read the contemporary city/metropolis, and what to emphasis in supplementing its composition. The third chapter is a brief history of the formulation of Prague’s historic urban landscape, particularly in the turbulent 20th century, and an outline of a possible solution for its further development based on the Metropolitan Plan. It describes how it is possible to supplement the historically layered city with a contemporary cultural layer precisely as assumed in the wording of the UNESCO inscription from 1992. The attempt of the book is to place today’s views of the city into a historical context. For this reason, in the first excursus, the book provides a selection of historic Prague vedute from the collection of the City of Prague Museum. In the second excursus, the book presents selection from the archival collections of IPR Praha with views of the design of the city from the 20th century. The main part of the book represents in the 3rd excursus series of new Prague vedute: the panoramic photographs taken from 2014 to 2017 as the artistic vision of Ester Havlová, capturing of a crucial historical moment in the search for a vision of the future of Prague. The final, fourth excursus is a description of the entirely new depiction of the proposed future composition of the city, the ‘digital veduta’ using orthogonal imaging, used aswell in the Metropolitan plan of Prague proposal. The present book is published to mark the 25th anniversary of the inscription of the historic centre of Prague to the UNESCO Register of World Cultural and Natural Heritage. The book also commemorates the 5th anniversary of the founding of the Office of the Metropolitan Plan. For the text and illustrations, the materials used are results of research by the Office of the Metropolitan Plan, published in full in the volume Metropolitní plán, koncept odůvodnění 2014, supplemented by an extensive new research including methodological principles of defining the height composition of the city.

The Lights of Earth - Gina Berriault

When it was first published, Andre Dubus said of The Lights of Earth, Like her stories, it s masterly. Its central character is a woman, Ilona Lewis, who confronts loss of earthly love. But Ilona s experience is far more complex than losing a man because he has become a celebrity. It involves the hearts of all of us seeking the lights of earth, the soul s blessing in its long, dark night. Forsaken by her lover as he gains fame as a novelist, Ilona is stirred by the need to remember the brother she left behind long ago. Revealing the precious worth of life that emerges from the depths of loss, The Lights of Earth is a deeply moving exploration of the soul and a masterwork of style and psychological acuity from one of the most celebrated voices in contemporary fiction. Gina Berriault s work as a storywriter of great psychological empathy and extraordinary elegance and subtlety was widely praised at the end of her life and, with this reissue of one of her more celebrated short novels, her work can be discovered by a new generation of readers.

The Book of Prague - Ivana Myšková, Jan Zikmund

An ex-con on compassionate release revisits his old haunts, only to feel dispossessed by how much the city has changed...The son of political dissidents in Soviet-era Prague is condemned to a life of menial jobs, like working at a local abattoir, unable to imagine his prospects ever improving...A young shop assistant in a tourist-friendly antique shop imagines what Prague would now look like if Czechoslovakia had stood up to the Nazis...The stories collected in this anthology show Prague to be a city of myriad layers and multiple histories. Famous for its untouched, Gothic and Baroque architecture and its trapped-in-aspic charm, it is also a place that has lived through numerous traumas over the last century and learned to conceal its scars, perhaps a little too well. Just as its landmarks should be preserved, so should these hidden histories, and sometimes the best place to preserve them is in stories.Translated by Alž beta Belá nová , Geoffrey Chew, Melvyn Clarke, Graeme Dibble, Paul Kaye, Andrew Oakland, Justin Quinn, Julia and Peter Sherwood, Paul Wilson and Alex Zucker.Supported by the Czech Literary Centre and the Moravian Library.

Prague - Zdeněk Thoma, Michal Thoma, Soňa Thomová

The spirit of Prague is difficult to describe, although many have tried. For artists at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries the city was a black temptress hidden in the négligé of the white mists of the Vltava, a tempting and treacherous woman, a capricious harlot - a dark Salome who dances with the heads of her paramours. In 1902 the French sculptor Auguste Rodin said that Prague is one of the most sublime cities. Approximately thirty years later another Frenchman, the poet André Breton, proclaimed that Prague was the magic capital of old Europe. And in his celebrated book Magic Prague, written in the latter half of the 20th century, the Italian academic Angelo Maria Ripellino wrote when I seek another word for mystery, the only word I can find is Prague. And he described the city as a breeding ground for phantoms, an arena of sorcery … It is a trap which - once it takes hold with its mists, its black arts, its poisoned honey - does not let go, does not forgive.

Prague Revisited - Muehlen Bernis

This book of over 200 photographs by Bernis and Peter von zur Muehlen covers the sweep of Prague’s history from World War II to the “Velvet Revolution.” The first chapter, illustrated by his mother’s black and white snapshots of the city, is an account of Peter’s life in Prague as a young boy during the months leading up to the end of World War II and of his family’s narrow escape days before the Red Army entered the city. The following chapters describe four visits by Bernis and Peter between 1985 and 1992, an epoch that saw Czechoslovakia’s transformation from Communist dictatorship to the restoration of democracy. The images reveal not only a glorious city, but also the many less prominent sites that give Prague its unique charm.Haunting images of the Old Jewish Cemetery remind the reader of the turbulent history of the Jews, nearly exterminated by the Nazis. One chapter traces the evolution of the Lennon Wall, a famous symbol of Prague’s long struggle for freedom. Lively accounts of the photographers’ travel experiences document a city slowly coming to terms with its own history. An afterword by Ori Z. Soltes, noted lecturer and author of twenty books, illuminates the city’s Judaeo-Christian history.

The Greengrocer and His TV : The Culture of Communism after the 1968 Prague Spring - Paulina Bren

The 1968 Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia brought an end to the Prague Spring and its promise of socialism with a human face. Before the invasion, Czech reformers had made unexpected use of television to advance political and social change. In its aftermath, Communist Party leaders employed the medium to achieve normalization, pitching television stars against political dissidents in a televised spectacle that defined the times. The Greengrocer and His TV offers a new cultural history of communism from the Prague Spring to the Velvet Revolution that reveals how state-endorsed ideologies were played out on television, particularly through soap opera-like serials. In focusing on the small screen, Paulina Bren looks to the normal of normalization, to the everyday experience of late communism.

Prague at the turn of the century - Pavel Scheufler

Towards the end of the Austro-Hungarian Empire Prague still possessed its venerable majesty, but now it was fast becoming a modern European metropolis. The old Jewish Quarter had been replaced with broad boulevards, modern bridges spanned the river, and the first steam trains from Vienna were arriving at the station. While only recently the Emperor and his guard had promenaded here, soon independence would be declared and a new country, Czechoslovakia, would be founded. The remarkable photographs in this book capture key moments and everyday life in Prague. Pavel Scheufler has selected over 140 photographs from his family s archive and written a learned commentary on each one. This book is not only a valuable account of a city in transition, but a guide to reading photographs in a way that lets us hear the fascinating stories they tell.

The History of St. Matthew´s Church in Prague-Dejvice - Vojtěch Pokorný

The current publication by author Vojtěch Pokorný takes as its subject not only the history of the oldest Christian sacred building in the Prague neighbourhood of Dejvice, but equally the past of the locality itself, starting from its first known settlement in late Neolithic times up to the present. Using a wide range of literature and sources, the author presents a truthful account of the oft-mythicised tales of the earliest traces of human presence in Upper Šárka and the founding of the church consecrated to St. Matthew, and in chronological succession relates the events transpiring there across the following centuries. Research into archival materials and other sources provided the basis for an imposing text that casts light on a history now nearly forgotten. The author unfolds previously neglected topics and opens the curtain for new awareness of our ancestors against the large-scale history of the Czech lands. Though undoubtedly a scholarly text, the book is nonetheless conceived as readable even for the wider public. Among other findings, the reader learns of the origins and gradual expansion of the famous St. Matthew s Fair - until only the recent past, associated with St. Matthew s Church itself. No less intriguing themes addressed are the church s famous gingerbread Nativity scene, or the depictions of the church by various artists. The text was reviewed by four professional historians, each addressing the relevant epoch of scholarly expertise - prehistory, medieval times, the Baroque era, and modernity. The publication is illustrated with a wealth of archival and contemporary photographs, historic engravings and maps, all capturing and enlivening the sacred structure and site that is its central theme Kniha autora Vojtěcha Pokorného pojednává nejen o dějinách nejstarší křesťanské svatyně v pražských Dejvicích, ale i o minulosti lokality samotné, počínaje prvním osídlením v pozdní době kamenné až po současnost. Autor uvádí pomocí bohatého poznámkového aparátu na pravou míru mýty o nejstarších stopách lidské činnosti na Horní Šárce a o vzniku kostelíka sv. Matěje a navazuje v chronologickém sledu líčením zdejších událostí v následujících staletích.Výzkum dobových archiválií a dalších pramenů dal vzniknout monolitnímu textu, který osvětluje dnes již téměř zapomenutou historii. Autor předkládá doposud nezpracované téma a otevírá nová poznání o našich předcích na pozadí velkých dějin českých zemí.

The Witches of Bellinas - J. Nicole Jones

Tansy and her husband Guy are the newest arrivals in Bellinas, a lush oasis tucked into the coast of northern California where a reclusive, creative community is beginning to take shape. Helmed by Guy s cousin Mia, a famous model-turned-wellness-luminary, and her tech mogul husband, the group renounces the outside world in pursuit of purity, fashioning their own rules about what to eat and how to live. Everything seems perfect in Bellinas: food is abundant, flowers are always in bloom, and nearby wildfires leave the town remarkably unscathed. While Guy is happy in their new lives, Tansy becomes more and more suspicious of the community and increasingly desperate to save her already-fragile marriage. And as lonely women have throughout the ages, she wants to believe in what may only be a beautiful lie. The Witches of Bellinas unfolds as a confession from Tansy, filled with anguish over the life, and sense of self, she s surrendered in her desperation to belong. In J. Nicole Jones s clever reimagining of cult power and groupthink, the question isn t why join, but rather, what happens when you understand the danger, but can t conceive of a way out?

The Politics of Skin Tone - Nicole D. Yadon

A nuanced examination of the salience of skin tone within African American politics. Research shows that skin tone is associated with significant differences in life experiences. On average, African Americans with darker skin earn lower wages, suffer worse health outcomes, and endure more negative criminal justice experiences than lighter-skinned African Americans. Nicole D. Yadon conceptualizes skin tone as one facet of the multidimensional construct of race that powerfully influences racialized experiences which, in turn, can influence political identities and attitudes. Drawing on evidence from one hundred in-depth interviews, multiple surveys, and a survey experiment, The Politics of Skin Tone investigates the political associations of skin tone. Yadon finds that skin tone correlates with political attitudes, particularly on issues where color-based disparities are especially pronounced such as criminal justice. Moreover, a sizable number of African Americans adopt a skin tone-based identity. In an era of shifting racial boundaries and growing color-based discrimination, The Politics of Skin Tone examines the implications for both scholars and policymakers.

Castle and Cathedral in Modern Prague: Longing for the Sacred in a Skeptical Age - Bruce R. Berglund

Prague in the early twentieth century was the city of cubists, surrealists, and the Good Soldier vejk. This book takes a new approach to interwar Prague by identifying religion as an integral part of the city s cultural history. As Prague emerged as a modern city and the Czech nation gained independence, Catholics, Protestants, and those who imagined a non-sectarian religion debated questions of faith and morality. Contrary to the conventional view of modern Czech elites as atheistic, Berglund shows how they were deeply concerned with the place of religion in modern life. Based upon a wide array of sources, the monograph explores the linkages between politics, theology, and architecture in the building of new symbols and a civil religion for the first Czechoslovak republic (1918-1938). Berglund views the contest of the sacred and secular in Prague within the broader context of religious change in twentieth-century Europe. His book lays a foundation for understanding both Czech culture of the interwar period as well as the nation s and Europe s religious history in the modern age. The author takes an approach that is both interdisciplinary and biographical by focusing on important figures in the politics and culture of interwar Prague, including Tomá Masaryk, the philosopher who became Czechoslovakia s first president; his daughter Alice, founding director of the Czechoslovak Red Cross; and Joze Plecnik, the Slovenian architect who directed the renovations of Prague Castle and designed one of the city s most renowned churches. This study of the beliefs and doubts held by these and other figures shows the transition from a (mostly) Catholic tradition to a new religious conception that was modern, humanistic, and detached from any institution much like the religious beliefs held by many Europeans today.

Prague in the Heart - Renáta Fučíková

Prague in the Heart is a collection of one hundred and eighty-nine true stories of events that have taken place in Prague over the past two hundred years. They show that the recent past has been no less dramatic and convoluted than in medieval times. Franz Kafka, Jaroslav Seifert, Bohumil Hrabal, Jaroslav Hašek, Jan Patočka, Jiří Dienstbier and Václav Havel were all residents of Prague. Occupying armies marched through Prague. There was a battle for Czechoslovak Radio in the Vinohrady quarter of Prague. Czech patriots were executed in Kobylisy, Prague. Dissidents were detained at Ruzyně in Prague. A Reich Protector was assassinated in Prague. And neighborhoods like Smíchov, Karlín and Libeň, once industrial areas, recorded the history of the Industrial Age - a time when poverty was intertwined with achievement, progress, and hope for a better future. Prague in the Heart is not an exhaustive historical study, but a remarkable literary statement from a renowned author who loves her city. Anglická verze titulu Praha v srdci.

What Is Now Known Was Once Only Imagined: An (Auto)biography of Niki de Saint Phalle - Nicole Rudick

A biography by Nicole Rudick told in Saint Phalle s own words, assembled from rare and unseen materialsKnown best for her exuberant, often large-scale sculptural works that celebrate the abundance and complexity of female desire, imagination and creativity, Niki de Saint Phalle viewed making art as a ritual, a performance⠔a process connecting life to art. This unconventional, illuminated biography, told in the first person in Saint Phalle s voice and her own hand, dilates large and small moments in Saint Phalle s life which she sometimes reveals with great candor, at other times carefully unwinding her secrets. Nicole Rudick, in a kind of collaboration with the artist, has assembled a gorgeous and detailed mosaic of Saint Phalle s visual and textual works from a trove of paintings, drawings, sketches and writings, many previously unpublished or long unavailable, that trace her mistakes and successes, her passions and her radical sense of joy. Saint Phalle s invocation⠔her bringing to life ⠔writes Rudick, is an apt summation of the overlap of Saint Phalle⠙s life and art: both a bringing into existence and a bringing to bear. These are visions from the frontiers of consciousness. Born in France, Niki de Saint Phalle (1930⠓2002) was raised in New York and began making art at age 23, pursuing a revelatory vision informed both by the monumental works of Antonin Gaudí and the Facteur Cheval, and by aspects of her own life. In addition to her Tirs (⠜shooting paintings⠝) and Nanas and her celebrated large-scale projects⠔including the Stravinsky Fountain at the Centre Pompidou, Golem in Jerusalem and the Tarot Garden in Tuscany⠔Saint Phalle produced writing and works on paper that delve into her own biography: childhood and her break with her family, marriage to Harry Mathews, motherhood, a long collaborative relationship with Jean Tinguely, numerous health crises and her late, productive years in Southern California. Saint Phalle has most recently been the subject of retrospectives at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, in 2015, and at MoMA P.S.1, in 2021.Nicole Rudick is a critic and an editor. Her writing on art, literature and comics has been published in the New York Review of Books, the New York Times, the New Yorker, Artforum and elsewhere. She was managing editor of the Paris Review for nearly a decade. She is the editor, most recently, of a new edition of Gary Panter⠙s legendary comic Jimbo: Adventures in Paradise (New York Review Comics, 2021).
