Scenáristova cesta je "klasický" praktický manuál k vyprávění příběhu pro scenáristy, spisovatele a prostě každého, kdo potřebuje vybudovat nebo napsat soudržný a gradovaný příběh. Vychází z autorovy teorie, podle níž je většinu všech příběhů možné zjednodušit na základní schémata narativních prvků a činitelů, vystopovatelných až do kolektivní imaginace příběhů z dávných mytologií. Základem příběhu je koncept tzv. "cesty hrdiny", při němž se Vogler inspiroval mytopoetickou teorií Josepha Campbella, ale pohled, který kniha nabízí, sahá daleko za něj.
