Přibližně patnáctitisícová německá posádka pod velením generálmajora Ernsta Matterna obdržela rozkaz zastavit útok 1. běloruského frontu maršála Žukova, který se neúprosně probíjel do Německa. Jeho cílem byl Berlín - srdce třetí říše. V ulicích strategicky důležité Poznaně se odehrála měsíc trvající bitva, v níž po boku Rudé armády bojovali i Poláci - jak vojáci Polské lidové armády, tak civilisté, kteří se účastnili několikadenního útoku na Citadelu, poslední místo odporu pevnost Poznaň.
