The essays in this book deal with those who currently figure among the most important Czech artists and whose work is internationally recognized. Most of them entered the art scene in the late 1980s on the crest of a powerful generational wave known as Czech postmodernism. Although this artistic drive ran parallel to revolutionary changes in Central and Eastern Europe, it would be grossly simplistic and misleading to view Czech postmodernism as a by-product of the disintegration of Communist regimes and exposure to the effects of West European culture. In fact, the story of Czech postmodernism is unique evidence that, in diverse social and political contexts, artists ultimately address issues of a general nature beyond politics and ideology. Based on period documents and photography, the book maps in detail the development of Czech non-university sciences from the 18th century when the Society of Unknown Scholars in the Austrian Lands was founded in Olomouc. The main attention is focused on the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and its most important precursors, whether the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, active in 1953-1992, or earlier institutions, such as the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts (originally the Emperor Franz Joseph Czech Academy for Sciences, Literature and Arts), founded in 1890, or the Royal Bohemian Society of Learning, which existed already from the 18th century. The area that comprises today's Czech Republic has a long and rich history of providing childcare facilities to preschool children. Kindergartens continue to be popular to this day and at present almost all Czech children attend these facilities. On the other hand, nurseries nearly vanished in the Czech Republic. The question remains why a country that used to belong to the world leaders in providing access to childcare has so suddenly become one of the greatest laggards concerning care for children under three. This question has led the authors to more questions. The authors show the historical-institutional roots of the development of contemporary Czech childcare discourses and policies and uncover the historical decisions that set the Czech Republic down its gendered familialist path. In their search, they emphasize the interaction between institutions and discourses of childcare. They are inspired by discursive institutionalism which focuses on the ways in which discourses influence institutions. This book, however, emphasizes that institutions also influence discourses: It shows how Czech institutions and political decisions of the past have led to the present unsatisfactory situation of the Czech early childcare. Jeho umění je do té míry iniciační, že dává zapomenout na realitu všedního dne a přináší schopnost vzepřít se času alespoň dočasným návratem někam, kde věci ještě dávaly jiný smysl, klacek představoval koně i loď a konec dne ohlašovala pohádka na dobrou noc. A právě fenomén času, jedno z Niklových klíčových témat, hraje také hlavní roli v této knize.

The presented monograph introduces the processes of vocabulary and grammar (primarily morphology) acquisition in one Czech child over a long time span. The research is based solely on the analysis of authentic material (the corpus of transcriptions of audio recordings and the parental diary), and it covers the period from the onset of speech until three and half years of age in the target child's development. The longitudinal study is oriented toward the acquisition of a lexicon and the acquisition of grammatical categories of inflectional parts of speech, namely, nouns, adjectives, pronouns and verbs. The analysis is largely building on the concepts of premorphology, protomorphology and modularised morphology. The results support the assertion that both grammatical and pragmatic competences are interrelated and that one limits the other.
