The Thames Estuary is the gateway into London that had to be defended against seaborne invasion. Through proximity to the Continent, these waters were a likely passageway for those intent upon seaborne raids or invasion, necessitating the need for a powerful naval force to be on hand when threatened. The first fortifications date back to Roman times. Jeho umění je do té míry iniciační, že dává zapomenout na realitu všedního dne a přináší schopnost vzepřít se času alespoň dočasným návratem někam, kde věci ještě dávaly jiný smysl, klacek představoval koně i loď a konec dne ohlašovala pohádka na dobrou noc. A právě fenomén času, jedno z Niklových klíčových témat, hraje také hlavní roli v této knize.
