Sochař Zdeněk Dvořák byl mimořádnou osobností českého výtvarného umění dvacátých a třicátých let 20. století. Přesto byla po desetiletí znalost jeho díla limitována jen několika málo abstraktními reliéfy, zachovanými ve veřejných institucích, a velkou neznámou zůstávaly jeho životní osudy. Podnětem k prvnímu monografickému zpracování tvorby Zdeňka Dvořáka se stala písemná pozůstalost objevená v Památníku národního písemnictví. Autorka monografie Hana Rousová prokázala, že se Dvořák jako jeden z mála u nás systematicky věnoval problematice sochařské, v některých případech i geometrické abstrakce. Svým zaměřením a invencí nemá v české abstrakci první poloviny 20. století, kromě Františka Kupky anebo Františka Foltýna, obdobu. Pokud bychom měli charakterizovat širší okruhy, k nimž lze Dvořákovu tvorbu přiřadit, potom by to byly Gutfreundovy plastiky založené na prolínání konkávních a konvexních ploch a v souvislosti s čistě abstraktními reliéfy let třicátých pak abstrakce Františka Foltýna a plastické kompozice Hanse Arpa. Obdivuhodné byly i Dvořákovy občanské postoje, po okupaci Československa se zapojil do protinacistického odboje jako člen ilegálního Národního revolučního výboru inteligence, byl zatčen a deportován do Osvětimi, kde zahynul. Monografie tyto aspekty zdůrazňuje a zároveň podrobně rekonstruuje Dvořákův životopis. Její důležitou součástí je obrazově dokumentovaný soupis díla.
