Migration Stories
Removing the borders between research and advocacy in studies of immigration Migrants’ and refugees’ stories have become an essential part of the public debate around immigration. Benjamin Gatling edits interdisciplinary essays that bring together the distinct perspectives of researchers, activists, and policymakers to emphasize how these often-siloed communities can use stories as social science data and advocacy tools. Ranging from oral history projects to the asylum process to calls for decolonial justice, the contributors’ analyses illuminate how migrants’ and refugees’ personal narratives influence both perceptions and policies. Their merger of perspectives provides a nuanced understanding of migration and emphasizes the importance of how storytelling can foster empathy, challenge stereotypes, and drive social change. At the same time, the essays center migrants’ and refugees’ voices within public debates and in work done to humanize the reality they face. Original and multifaceted, Migration Stories provides a vital addition to how we study and frame immigration.

Global Migration - Caroline Nagel, Elizabeth Mavroudi
This new, fully updated edition of Global Migration provides students with a thorough and grounded understanding of multiple dimensions of migration, including labour markets, citizenship, border control, integration and identity.Written by two geographers, the book incorporates insights from across the social sciences and is accessible to students in many disciplines. Providing a useful and timely introduction to migration, the textbook addresses migration in a holistic way and equips students with the tools they need to participate in contemporary debates about migration in sending and destination contexts. It conveys to students that the causes and effects of migration are geographically specific and contingent upon class, race, gender and other markers of social difference. Rather than identifying simple solutions to migration ‘problems’, the book encourages students to think about unauthorized migration, asylum, refugee resettlement, labour migration, and other forms of mobility (and immobility) from different vantage points.Global Migration serves as the go-to book for teaching advanced undergraduate and Master’s-level students about the complexities of migration across nation-state borders.

Understanding Global Migration
Understanding Global Migration offers scholars a groundbreaking account of emerging migration states around the globe, especially in the Global South.Leading scholars of migration have collaborated to provide a birds-eye view of migration interdependence. Understanding Global Migration proposes a new typology of migration states, identifying multiple ideal types beyond the classical liberal type. Much of the world''s migration has been to countries in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and South America. The authors assembled here account for diverse histories of colonialism, development, and identity in shaping migration policy. This book provides a truly global look at the dilemmas of migration governance: Will migration be destabilizing, or will it lead to greater openness and human development? The answer depends on the capacity of states to manage migration, especially their willingness to respect the rights of the ever-growing portion of the world''s population that is on the move.

How Migration Really Works - Hein de Haas
Authoritative and myth-busting, this is the one book you need to read to understand why we've been wrong about migration - perfect for fans of Tim Marshall's Prisoners of GeographyGlobal migration is not at an all-time high. Climate change will not lead to mass migration. Immigration mainly benefits the wealthy, not workers.Border restrictions have paradoxically produced more migration. These statements might sound counter-intuitive or just outright wrong - but the facts behind the headlines reveal a completely different story to the ones we're told about migration. In this ground-breaking and revelatory book, based on more than three decades of research, leading expert Professor Hein de Haas explodes myths from left to right that politicians, interest groups and media regularly spread about migration.Above all, How Migration Really Works offers a new vision of global migration based on facts rather than fears, and a paradigm-altering understanding of this perennially important subject.

The Next Great Migration
We are surrounded by stories of people on the move. Wild species, too, are escaping warming seas and desiccated lands in a mass exodus. Politicians and the media present this upheaval of migration patterns as unprecedented, blaming it for the spread of disease and conflict, and spreading anxiety across the world as a result. But the science and history of migration in animals, plants, and humans tell a different story. Far from being a disruptive behaviour, migration is an ancient and lifesaving response to environmental change, a biological imperative as necessary as breathing. Climate changes triggered the first human migrations out of Africa. Falling sea levels allowed our passage across the Bering Sea. Unhampered by borders, migration allowed our ancestors to people the planet, into the highest reaches of the Himalayan Mountains and the most remote islands of the Pacific, disseminating the biological, cultural and social diversity that ecosystems and societies depend upon.In other words, migration is not the crisis - it is the solution.Tracking the history of misinformation from the 18th century through to today's anti-immigration policies, The Next Great Migration makes the case for a future in which migration is not a source of fear, but of hope.

International Migration - Khalid Koser
In recent years, global migration has transformed in terms of its numbers and reach, its political significance, and its impact. The rising rates of international migration have been matched by growing public and media interest around the world. Today, the political and media attention on migration and greater public interest and concern feed into an international debate that is all too often poorly informed and one-sided. This Very Short Introduction looks at the phenomenon of international human migration - both legal and illegal - and offers an objective stance on the topic, and its benefits and challenges. Khalid Koser reveals the opportunities migration presents that must be taken advantage of in the current economic climate, and debunks common myths to demonstrate that society, as we now know it, cannot function without migrants. Using interviews with migrants from around the world, Koser presents the human side of issues such as asylum, human trafficking, migrant smuggling, and the international labour force, inviting readers to come to their own conclusions on the international migration situation today.ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. Bird Migration - Ian Newton
The phenomenon of bird migration has fascinated people from time immemorial. The arrivals and departures of different species marked the seasons, heralding spring and autumn, and providing a reliable calendar long before anything better became available.Migration is shown by many kinds of animals, including butterflies and other insects, mammals, marine turtles and fish, but in none is it as extensively developed as in birds. The collective travel routes of birds span almost the entire globe, with some extreme return journeys covering more than 30,000 km. As a result of migration, bird distributions are continually changing – in regular seasonal patterns, and on local, regional or global scales.Migration has repeatedly prompted familiar questions, such as where birds go or come from, why do they do it, how do they know when and where to travel, and how do they find their way? In this seminal new book, Ian Newton sets out to answer these – and other – questions. The book is divided into four main sections: the first is introductory, describing the different types of bird movements, methods of study, and the main migration patterns seen around the British Isles; the second part is concerned mainly with the process of migration ... Czech Sport Migration - William Crossan
This book explores the diverse landscape of sport migration across various sports, examining how cultural significance and the global hierarchy shape migration patterns, networks, and decisions. The Czech Republic boasts a rich sporting heritage that traces back to the Sokol movement and has been significantly influenced by the YMCA. Sport migration continues to increasingly shape the country's sporting culture today. Focusing on the cultural primary sports of ice hockey and football, the secondary sports of basketball and volleyball, and the developing sport of baseball, this book examines the impacts of migration on athletes, national federations, teams, and fans. Based on over twenty years of ethnographic research, the author employs multiple methodologies to examine this phenomenon of globalization, including the historical, political, economic, and sporting system contexts that influence these multi-directional global flows. Each chapter employs different methodologies to analyze migration and its effects, providing valuable insights for future researchers.

Research Methodologies and Ethical Challenges in Digital Migration Studies
This Open Access book investigates the methodological and ethical dilemmas involved when working with digital technologies and large-scale datasets in relation to ethnographic studies of digital migration practices and trajectories. Digital technologies reshape not only every phase of the migration process itself (by providing new ways to access, to share and preserve relevant information) but also the activities of other actors, from solidarity networks to border control agencies. In doing so, digital technologies create a whole new set of ethical and methodological challenges for migration studies: from data access to data interpretation, privacy protection, and research ethics more generally. Of specific concern are the aspects of digital migration researchers accessing digital platforms used by migrants, who are subject to precarious and insecure life circumstances, lack recognised papers and are in danger of being rejected and deported. Thus, the authors call for new modes of caring for (big) data when researching migrants’ digital practices in the configuration of migration and borders. Besides taking proper care of research participants’ privacy, autonomy, and security, this also spans carefully establishing analytically sustainable environments for the respective data sets. In doing so, the book argues that it is essential to carefully reflect on researchers’ own ... Unknown localization key: "more"

Migration and Identity in Nordic Literature - Martin Humpál, Helena Březinová
The book Migration and Identity in Nordic Literature focuses on migration as it has manifested itself in literature and culture in the nineteenth, twentieth and early twenty-first centuries in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland. Since migration almost always leads to a disturbance of identity and creates a potential for conflicts between individuals, as well as between groups of people, the authors have chosen to examine the theme of migration in relation to the questions of identity, both national and individual. The present monograph therefore concentrates on such cases of disturbance, disruption and hybridization of identity, as they are represented in literary works linked to the European North. The book will be of interest to all readers who are interested in issues such as xenophobia, racism, nationalism, cosmopolitism, globalization, cultural transfer, cultural hybridity, multiculturalism and multilingualism.

The Migration Question - Leila Simona Talani, Matilde Rosina
This authoritative book proposes a fresh perspective on international migration, offering decisive answers to the big questions, and dismantling the main myths surrounding one of the most salient issues of today''s global politics. Who are these migrants? Do they steal our jobs? Can we help them in their home countries? Do border controls improve security? Are open borders desirable? Leila Simona Talani and Matilde Rosina address these issues and more in their deeply researched study of migration into both Europe and the United States.Assessing globalisation''s impact on international migration, the authors find that it is virtually impossible to stop contemporary flows from the Global South to North. In this context, policies designed to control, limit or deter immigration simply transform some or all regular migrants into irregular ones--exacerbating insecurity for citizens of the receiving state, and criminalising the migrants.Through empirical research including original surveys and interviews, Talani and Rosina demonstrate conclusively that the only solution to this short-circuit world of securitisation and criminalisation is for the Global North to open its doors to the migrants already, inevitably, coming through--particularly since the evidence shows that regularising migration is a positive-sum game, in economic, social and security terms.

Migration Letters - M. Nzadi Keita
A poetry collection that reflects on intimate aspects of Black history, culture, and identity, revealing an uncommon gaze on working-class Philadelphia from the 1960s to the present dayIn 55 poems, Migration Letters straddles the personal and public with particular, photorealistic detail to identify what, over time, creating a home creates in ourselves. Drawn from her experiences of being born in Philadelphia into a Black family and a Black culture transported from the American South by the Great Migration, M. Nzadi KeitaÂ’s poetry sparks a profoundly hybrid gaze of the visual and the sensory. Her lyrical fragments and sustained narrative plunge into the unsung aspects of Black culture and explore how Black Americans journey toward joy.Propelled by the conditions that motivated her familyÂ’s migration north, the poems pull heavily from KeitaÂ’s place in her family, communities, and the world at large. They testify to her time and circumstances growing up Black in Philadelphia on the periphery of the civil rights and Black Power movements. Each poem builds upon an inheritance of voices: a panoramic perspective of an Easter Sunday service in a Black church gives way to an account of psychic violence in a newly integrated school; the collective voices of ... The Shortest History of Migration - Ian Goldin
From our earliest wanderings to the rise of the digital nomad, here is the story of human migration. For hundreds of thousands of years, the ability of Homo sapiens to travel across vast distances and adapt to new environments has been key to our survival as a species. Yet this deep migratory impulse is being tested as never before. By building ever stronger walls and raising barriers to progress, governments are harming the lives of migrants and threatening the future well-being of our societies. In The Shortest History of Migration, a visionary thinker tells a story of the movement of peoples that spans every age and continent and goes to the heart of what makes us human. Drawn from ancient records and the latest genetic research, it recounts strange, terrible and uplifting tales of migrants past and present, examining the legacies of empire, slavery and war. Finally, Goldin turns his attention to today’s world, bringing together the evidence of history with the most recent data to suggest how we might create a more humane future – one that allows us to reap the tremendous benefits that migration can offer.

Featuring four new plays written and devised in collaboration with groups of secondary school children, this collection examines immigration to and emigration from the UK. A theatre-in-education project coordinated by Tamasha theatre company and The Migration Museum, children worked on exercises designed to develop their understanding of, and feelings about, migration. Changing Planet: What Is the Environmental Impact of Human Migration and Settlement? - Sally Morganová
This interesting book examines how human migration and settlement has affected planet Earth. From the earliest times humans have shaped and changed the landscape. The book will provides many historical and modern-day examples of changes to our planet caused by migration and settlement. As people need more land for farming and to build towns and cities, natural habitats and wilderness areas are destroyed. In countries such as India and China the urbanization of the population and the rapid growth of cities is creating pollution problems and adding to the problem of carbon emissions that are causing climate change. The growth of transport infrastructure between our “settlements” has made the daily migration of commuting easier, another contributor to increasing carbon emissions.

An interpersonal look into Poland’s shift from an emigration country to an immigration country.Polish Cities of Migration analyzes Poland’s transition to become a “country of immigration.” Incorporating in-depth interviews with thirty-seven Polish returned migrants, seventy Ukrainians, and seventeen foreigners living in Kalisz, Plock, and Pila, the book explores two interconnected puzzles: how Poland’s migration transition is influenced by its current status as an emigration country, and why migrants are spreading out beyond the metropolises. It argues that migrants’ feelings of comfort in such locations are explained by network and lifestyle considerations, as well as the social acceptance of migration by former migrant Poles.

Climates of Migration - Dominic Thomas
Climate and migration provide the organizational pillars, and the plural “climates†in the title accentuates the figurative non-literal sense to signify the atmosphere that is attached to anxiety, disinformation, fear and violence. Competing narratives and storytelling mechanisms conjointly operate over a longer history of colonial conquest and remain present in the mind-sets informing the afterlives of empire, as evidenced in debates on identity politics, nationalism, environmental, racial and social justice. The broad transregional (Africa, the Caribbean, Europe) and transdisciplinary framework privileges comparative analysis between various disciplines and fields, notably migration studies, environmental humanities, eco-feminism, nationalism, and decolonial and postcolonial studies, while adopting multigenre approaches that include a diversity of perspectives from literature, media discourse, art, propaganda, visual culture and new technologies. Together, these challenge the criminalizing, debasing and often dehumanizing logic associated with official policymaking and propose instead alternative forms of humanization and identification aimed at fostering modes of empathy. Climates of Migration explores various forms of environmental exploitation and degradation, especially in African literatures where the thematic transformations that have resulted from engagement with environmental ecocide have contributed to a revitalization of writing. Social Resilience and International Migration in the Canadian City
This timely volume examines how policies, institutions, and places influence the lives of immigrants and temporary migrants to Canada and how, in turn, those newcomers transform the cities in which they live. Social Resilience and International Migration in the Canadian City draws attention to disparities in outcomes for migrants and proposes strategies to enhance their participation in cities of all sizes. Focused on Ontario and Quebec, chapters pinpoint factors that affect the settlement and integration of immigrants, as well as growing numbers of international students, foreign workers, and refugee claimants. Contributors illustrate how federal, provincial, and municipal policies and diverse institutions – from grassroots churches to settlement agencies – can influence migrants'' capacity to navigate and leverage the resources required to overcome integration challenges. The book''s social resilience framework attends to the social supports that empower migrants to take collective action for their own futures. As migrants interact with a broad range of institutions, those institutions are transformed and become more resilient themselves. As the world faces unprecedented levels of displacement with over 100 million people forced to flee conflict, economic instability and climate crises, responses to migration have become increasingly complex. This book examines the military-humanitarian strategies used to manage the movement of people on the move, focusing on the migration of Venezuelans to northern Brazil. By developing the concept of ‘debilitating mobilities,’ the book explores mobility governance through border security, urban control and shelter provision. Teaching Migration in Literature, Film, and Media
Essays on how to teach one of the most important issues of our timePeople migrate to seek opportunities, to unite with family, and to escape war, persecution, poverty, and environmental disasters. A phenomenon that has real, lived effects on individuals and communities, migration also carries symbolic, ideological significance. Its depiction in literature, film, and other media powerfully shapes worldviews, identities, attitudes toward migrants, and a political landscape that is both local and global. It is imperative, then, to connect the disciplinary and theoretical tools we have for understanding migration and to put them in conversation with students' experiences. Featuring a wide range of classroom approaches, this volume brings together topics that are often taught separately, including tourism, slavery, drug cartels, race, whiteness, settler colonialism, the Arab Spring, assimilation, and disability. Readers are introduced to terminology and legal frameworks and to theories of migration in relation to Black studies, ethnic studies, Asian American studies, Latinx studies, border studies, postcolonial studies, and Indigenous studies. Former Children's Laureates Michael Rosen and Sir Quentin Blake join forces for a landmark new collection. Michael’s poems are divided into four: in the first series, he draws on his childhood as part of a first-generation Polish family living in London; in the second, on his perception of the War as a young boy; in the third, on his “missing†relatives and the Holocaust; and in the fourth, and final, on global experiences of migration. By turns charming, shocking and heart-breaking, this is an anthology with a story to tell and a powerful point to make: “You can only do something now.â€

Hopes, Needs, Rights and Laws: How Do Governments and Citizens Manage Migration and Settlement? - Ceri Oeppen
As our world becomes “smaller”, how do governments and citizens manage and react to migration and settlement? Themes explored in this intriguing book include: rights and laws - freedom of movement across borders, human rights, seeking asylum, and immigration controls; the different types of migrants - asylum seekers, refugees, illegal immigrants, the undocumented labor force; coping with migration - migrants need safety, schooling, health care, and housing. How can governments provide this to new populations? How do existing citizens view the help given to incomers? How can governments and citizens promote tolerance, encourage integration, and celebrate diversity?

The Oxford Handbook of Refugee and Forced Migration Studies
Refugee and Forced Migration Studies has grown from being a concern of a relatively small number of scholars and policy researchers in the 1980s to a global field of interest with thousands of students worldwide studying displacement either from traditional disciplinary perspectives or as a core component of newer programmes across the Humanities and Social and Political Sciences. Today the field encompasses both rigorous academic research which may or may not ultimately inform policy and practice, as well as action-research focused on advocating in favour of refugees'' needs and rights. This authoritative Handbook critically evaluates the birth and development of Refugee and Forced Migration Studies, and analyses the key contemporary and future challenges faced by academics and practitioners working with and for forcibly displaced populations around the world. The 52 state-of-the-art chapters, written by leading academics, practitioners, and policymakers working in universities, research centres, think tanks, NGOs and international organizations, provide a comprehensive and cutting-edge overview of the key intellectual, political, social and institutional challenges arising from mass displacement in the world today. The chapters vividly illustrate the vibrant and engaging debates that characterise this rapidly expanding field of research and practice.

Season of Migration to the North - Tayeb Salih
The story of a man undone by a culture that in part created him, Season of Migration to the North, is a powerful and evocative examination of colonization in two vastly different worlds. When a young man returns to his village in the Sudan after many years studying in Europe, he finds that among the familiar faces there is now a stranger - the enigmatic Mustafa Sa''eed. As the two become friends, Mustafa tells the younger man the disturbing story of his own life in London after the First World War. Lionized by society and desired by women as an exotic novelty, Mustafa was driven to take brutal revenge on the decadent West and was, in turn, destroyed by it. Now the terrible legacy of his actions has come to haunt the small village at the bend of the Nile.

Changing Cultural Landscapes: How Are People and Their Communities Affected by Migration and Settlement? - Marina Cohen
Culture gives humans a sense of identity. This title examines how cultures around the world mix and change in response to migration and settlement. This fascinating book examines: cultural superiority - suppressing or abusing the culture of an indigenous people; coercion or conversion - forcing another culture to adopt beliefs or a way of life, or when it willingly “converts;” integration - adopting the beliefs and ways of a new homeland; protection - the belief that culture must be “protected” and “preserved;" fusion - the successful mixing of different cultures. Examples from history include: the slave trade and the impact of African culture on North America and then the world; the forcing of Native Americans to adopt European culture; the British Empire and India and the cultural interchange between the two countries; the mixing and spreading of different cuisines, music, art and design styles; the growth of multi-cultural cities.

The Great Spiritual Migration - Brian D. McLaren
Many people experience Christianity as a system of belief, focused on an exclusive Supreme Being who favours some and rejects others, and is defended by a set of change-averse, self-protecting institutions. In The Great Spiritual Migration, Brian McLaren proposes that this conventional understanding of Christianity is ripe for a conversion: from system of belief to way of life, from exclusive Supreme Being to the loving, healing, reconciling Spirit embodied in Jesus, and from an organised institutional religion that supports an unjust status quo to an organising movement-building religion that helps a better world be born. Drawing from his work as a pastor, speaker, ecumenical networker and activist, McLaren issues a call and offers a plan for radical change that can shift the direction of Christian faith to be more in sync with its founder, more life-giving for individual Christians and congregations - and more of a life-giving resource for the whole world.

The Ice Migration - Jacqueline Crooks
The stories in this collection move around in time and place, but linked by the experiences of the descendants of a Jamaican family of mixed Indian and African heritage. From Roaring River in rural Jamaica in 1908 where the descendants of African slaves make connections with new arrivals from Calcutta to work in the sugar cane fields, to Southall in 2013, where the Millers live alongside newer migrants from India, The Ice Migration is a poetic exploration of movement as central to the human condition, from the ancestors of the vanished Tainos in Jamaica who crossed the Behring Straits 40,000 years ago, who linger in spirit, to Tutus who is driven to separation from her family, to the constancy of moving on and ultimately return to Roaring River. The people of Jacqueline Crooks’ stories are deeply enmeshed in their African/Indian Jamaican world of dreams, visions, duppies and spiritual presences that connect them across time and place. What they discover beyond the strangeness of change of place and the hostilities they encounter is that life remains defined by its common crises – of birth, the complications of sexuality, sickness, old age, and death – and the comforts of food, stories and ...
