Governing Migration and Mobility - Bronte Alexander
As the world faces unprecedented levels of displacement with over 100 million people forced to flee conflict, economic instability and climate crises, responses to migration have become increasingly complex. This book examines the military-humanitarian strategies used to manage the movement of people on the move, focusing on the migration of Venezuelans to northern Brazil. By developing the concept of ‘debilitating mobilities,’ the book explores mobility governance through border security, urban control and shelter provision. Shedding light on the intersecting logics of aid, security and vulnerability, this book reveals the multiscalar governance of migration in precarious environments.

Research Methodologies and Ethical Challenges in Digital Migration Studies
This Open Access book investigates the methodological and ethical dilemmas involved when working with digital technologies and large-scale datasets in relation to ethnographic studies of digital migration practices and trajectories. Digital technologies reshape not only every phase of the migration process itself (by providing new ways to access, to share and preserve relevant information) but also the activities of other actors, from solidarity networks to border control agencies. In doing so, digital technologies create a whole new set of ethical and methodological challenges for migration studies: from data access to data interpretation, privacy protection, and research ethics more generally. Of specific concern are the aspects of digital migration researchers accessing digital platforms used by migrants, who are subject to precarious and insecure life circumstances, lack recognised papers and are in danger of being rejected and deported. Thus, the authors call for new modes of caring for (big) data when researching migrants’ digital practices in the configuration of migration and borders. Besides taking proper care of research participants’ privacy, autonomy, and security, this also spans carefully establishing analytically sustainable environments for the respective data sets. In doing so, the book argues that it is essential to carefully reflect on researchers’ own ... Unknown localization key: "more"

Migration and Identity in Nordic Literature - Martin Humpál, Helena Březinová
The book Migration and Identity in Nordic Literature focuses on migration as it has manifested itself in literature and culture in the nineteenth, twentieth and early twenty-first centuries in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland. Since migration almost always leads to a disturbance of identity and creates a potential for conflicts between individuals, as well as between groups of people, the authors have chosen to examine the theme of migration in relation to the questions of identity, both national and individual. The present monograph therefore concentrates on such cases of disturbance, disruption and hybridization of identity, as they are represented in literary works linked to the European North. The book will be of interest to all readers who are interested in issues such as xenophobia, racism, nationalism, cosmopolitism, globalization, cultural transfer, cultural hybridity, multiculturalism and multilingualism.

Changing Planet: What Is the Environmental Impact of Human Migration and Settlement? - Sally Morganová
This interesting book examines how human migration and settlement has affected planet Earth. From the earliest times humans have shaped and changed the landscape. The book will provides many historical and modern-day examples of changes to our planet caused by migration and settlement. As people need more land for farming and to build towns and cities, natural habitats and wilderness areas are destroyed. In countries such as India and China the urbanization of the population and the rapid growth of cities is creating pollution problems and adding to the problem of carbon emissions that are causing climate change. The growth of transport infrastructure between our “settlements” has made the daily migration of commuting easier, another contributor to increasing carbon emissions.

Migration and Displacement in a Changing Climate - Kayly Ober, Robert A. McLeman, Kelsea Best
This book provides insight into the impact of climate change on human mobility - including both migration and displacement - by synthesizing key concepts, research, methodology, policy, and emerging issues surrounding the topic. It illuminates the connections between climate change and its implications for voluntary migration, involuntary displacement, and immobility by providing examples from around the world. The chapters use the latest findings from the natural and social sciences to identify key interactions shaping current climate-related migration, displacement, and immobility; predict future changes in those patterns and methods used to model them; summarize key policy and governance instruments available to us to manage the movements of people in a changing climate; and offer directions for future research and opportunities. This book will be valuable for students, researchers, and policy makers of geography, environmental science, climate and sustainability studies, demography, sociology, public policy, and political science.

Teaching Migration in Literature, Film, and Media
Essays on how to teach one of the most important issues of our timePeople migrate to seek opportunities, to unite with family, and to escape war, persecution, poverty, and environmental disasters. A phenomenon that has real, lived effects on individuals and communities, migration also carries symbolic, ideological significance. Its depiction in literature, film, and other media powerfully shapes worldviews, identities, attitudes toward migrants, and a political landscape that is both local and global. It is imperative, then, to connect the disciplinary and theoretical tools we have for understanding migration and to put them in conversation with students' experiences. Featuring a wide range of classroom approaches, this volume brings together topics that are often taught separately, including tourism, slavery, drug cartels, race, whiteness, settler colonialism, the Arab Spring, assimilation, and disability. Readers are introduced to terminology and legal frameworks and to theories of migration in relation to Black studies, ethnic studies, Asian American studies, Latinx studies, border studies, postcolonial studies, and Indigenous studies. This volume also contains discussion of the following texts, films, and other media: Ai Weiwei, Human Flow; Mati Diop, Atlantiques; Wapikoni Mobile; Nuruddin Farah, Links; Uwem Akpan, Luxurious Hearses; J. Hopes, Needs, Rights and Laws: How Do Governments and Citizens Manage Migration and Settlement? - Ceri Oeppen
As our world becomes “smaller”, how do governments and citizens manage and react to migration and settlement? Themes explored in this intriguing book include: rights and laws - freedom of movement across borders, human rights, seeking asylum, and immigration controls; the different types of migrants - asylum seekers, refugees, illegal immigrants, the undocumented labor force; coping with migration - migrants need safety, schooling, health care, and housing. How can governments provide this to new populations? How do existing citizens view the help given to incomers? How can governments and citizens promote tolerance, encourage integration, and celebrate diversity?

Mobility and Forced Displacement in the Middle East
Amid pervasive and toxic language, and equally ugly ideas, suggesting that migrants are invaders and human mobility is an aberration, one might imagine that human beings are naturally sedentary: that the desire to move from one's birthplace is abnormal. As the contributors to this volume attest, however, migration and human mobility are part and parcel of the world we live in, and the continuous flow of people and exchange of cultures are as old as the societies we have built together. Together, the chapters in this volume emphasise the diversity of the origins, consequences and experiences of human mobility in the Middle East. From multidisciplinary perspectives and through case studies, the contributors offer the reader a deeper understanding of current as well as historical incidences of displacement and forced migration. In addition to offering insights on multiple root causes of displacement, the book also addresses the complex challenges of host-refugee relations, migrants' integration and marginalisation, humanitarian agencies, and the role and responsibility of states. Cross-cutting themes bind several chapters together: the challenges of categories; the dynamics of control and contestation between migrants and states at borders; and the persistence of identity issues influencing regional patterns of migration.

Global Migration - Caroline Nagel, Elizabeth Mavroudi
This new, fully updated edition of Global Migration provides students with a thorough and grounded understanding of multiple dimensions of migration, including labour markets, citizenship, border control, integration and identity.Written by two geographers, the book incorporates insights from across the social sciences and is accessible to students in many disciplines. Providing a useful and timely introduction to migration, the textbook addresses migration in a holistic way and equips students with the tools they need to participate in contemporary debates about migration in sending and destination contexts. It conveys to students that the causes and effects of migration are geographically specific and contingent upon class, race, gender and other markers of social difference. Rather than identifying simple solutions to migration ‘problems’, the book encourages students to think about unauthorized migration, asylum, refugee resettlement, labour migration, and other forms of mobility (and immobility) from different vantage points.Global Migration serves as the go-to book for teaching advanced undergraduate and Master’s-level students about the complexities of migration across nation-state borders.

Changing Cultural Landscapes: How Are People and Their Communities Affected by Migration and Settlement? - Marina Cohen
Culture gives humans a sense of identity. This title examines how cultures around the world mix and change in response to migration and settlement. This fascinating book examines: cultural superiority - suppressing or abusing the culture of an indigenous people; coercion or conversion - forcing another culture to adopt beliefs or a way of life, or when it willingly “converts;” integration - adopting the beliefs and ways of a new homeland; protection - the belief that culture must be “protected” and “preserved;" fusion - the successful mixing of different cultures. Examples from history include: the slave trade and the impact of African culture on North America and then the world; the forcing of Native Americans to adopt European culture; the British Empire and India and the cultural interchange between the two countries; the mixing and spreading of different cuisines, music, art and design styles; the growth of multi-cultural cities.

International Migration - Khalid Koser
In recent years, global migration has transformed in terms of its numbers and reach, its political significance, and its impact. The rising rates of international migration have been matched by growing public and media interest around the world. Today, the political and media attention on migration and greater public interest and concern feed into an international debate that is all too often poorly informed and one-sided. This Very Short Introduction looks at the phenomenon of international human migration - both legal and illegal - and offers an objective stance on the topic, and its benefits and challenges. Khalid Koser reveals the opportunities migration presents that must be taken advantage of in the current economic climate, and debunks common myths to demonstrate that society, as we now know it, cannot function without migrants. Using interviews with migrants from around the world, Koser presents the human side of issues such as asylum, human trafficking, migrant smuggling, and the international labour force, inviting readers to come to their own conclusions on the international migration situation today.ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. The Queen of Spades and Other Stories - Alexander Pushkin
The Queen of Spades has long been acknowledged as one of the world''s greatest short stories. In this classic literary representation of gambling, Alexander Pushkin explores the nature of obsession. Hints of the occult and gothic alternate with scenes of St Petersburg high-society in the story of the passionate Hermann''s quest to master chance and make his fortune at the card-table. Underlying the taut plot is an ironical treatment of the romantic dreamer and social outcast. This volume contains three other major works of Pushkin''s fiction, moving from the witty parodies of sentimentalism and high melodrama in The Tales of Belkin to an early experiment with recreating the past in Peter the Great''s Blackamoor. It concludes with the novel-length masterpiece The Captain''s Daughter, which combines historical fiction in the manner of Sir Walter Scott with the colour and devices of the Russian fairy-tale in a narrative of rebellion and romance. These new translations, as well as being meticulously faithful to the original, do full justice to the elegance and fluency of Pushkin''s prose. Migration Stories
Removing the borders between research and advocacy in studies of immigration Migrants’ and refugees’ stories have become an essential part of the public debate around immigration. Benjamin Gatling edits interdisciplinary essays that bring together the distinct perspectives of researchers, activists, and policymakers to emphasize how these often-siloed communities can use stories as social science data and advocacy tools. Ranging from oral history projects to the asylum process to calls for decolonial justice, the contributors’ analyses illuminate how migrants’ and refugees’ personal narratives influence both perceptions and policies. Their merger of perspectives provides a nuanced understanding of migration and emphasizes the importance of how storytelling can foster empathy, challenge stereotypes, and drive social change. At the same time, the essays center migrants’ and refugees’ voices within public debates and in work done to humanize the reality they face. Original and multifaceted, Migration Stories provides a vital addition to how we study and frame immigration.

This book critically explores the complexities of intra-Schengen border control and migration dynamics within Europe. It provides a comprehensive analysis of how various actors, including border officials and state apparatuses, interact in managing mobility and enforcing controls. The theoretical foundation draws on FoucaultÂ’s concept of the dispositif, examining how borders are enforced through a combination of legal frameworks, discourses, and on-the-ground practices. The book emphasizes the importance of discretion in border control, arguing that it plays a pivotal role in shaping decisions at both the organizational and street levels. It delves into the experiences of Dutch border control officers and the wider European context, offering a comparative analysis of Poland and Germany''s intra-Schengen borderlands. By drawing on real-world case studies, it showcases the tensions between security and mobility, and how migration is managed through both visible and covert policing practices. The work is grounded in rich qualitative data, collected over years of fieldwork, and addresses key debates in migration and criminology studies, particularly the evolving concept of "crimmigration" and its implications for human rights and security policies. This book will be of interest to criminologists, sociologists, legal scholars, and political scientists alike, as well as all those engaged in studies on migration, ... Russia Container - Alexander Kluge, Alexander Booth
An intellectually stimulating yet accessible collection of short vignettes on Russia and Germany by Alexander Kluge. Not just in light of a contested pipeline during the war in Ukraine but also after centuries of both exchange and rejection, Russia and Germany were and are as far away from each other as they are intrinsically linked. The geopolitical present seems critical, the signs pointing towards conflict and polarity.  In this hot climate, German author Alexander Kluge makes Russia the exclusive subject of his latest book, offering multiple perspectives: from that of the historical German patriots of the Napoleonic Wars of Liberation to the narrative point of view of Franz Kafka and Heiner Müller; from messianic yearning and utopian expectations of the twentieth century to the full-blown or near-miss catastrophes in the atomic age.  Composed in Kluge’s characteristic short-prose vignette style, interspersed with numerous images and often humorous asides, Russia Container is yet another brilliant and thought-provoking work from one of Europe’s most prolific and deeply intellectual literary genius. Alexander III, 1249-1286 - Norman H. Reid
Winner of the Saltire Society Scottish History Book of the YearPresiding over an age of relative peace and prosperity, Alexander III represented the zenith of Scottish medieval kingship.  The events which followed his early and unexpected death plunged Scotland into turmoil, and into a period of warfare and internal decline which almost brought about the demise of the Scottish state. This study fills a serious gap in the historiography of medieval Scotland. For many decades, even centuries, Scotland’s medieval kingship has been regarded as a close likeness of the English monarchy, having been ‘modernised’ in that image by the twelfth- and thirteenth-century kings, who had close relationships with their southern counterparts. Recent research has cast doubt on that view, and this examination of Alexander III’s reign is based on a view of Scottish kingship which depends on much firmer continuity with its earlier, celtic past. It challenges accepted truth, revealing that the nature of state and government, and the relationships between ruler and subject, were quite different from the previous ‘received view’.On the cusp of a dynastic catastrophe which led to economic and political disaster, Alexander III’s reign captures a snapshot of Scotland at the end of a period of ... Hearts and Minds - Walter Alexander
The great scientific revolution of the last five hundred years, with its technological glories and medical miracles, has landed upon a set of summary conclusions – or some slightly tweaked variations – depicting a random, indifferent, and wholly impersonal cosmos. The world, we are told, is made up of particles and forces. Evolution, impelled by the single purpose of survival, is guided by chance through natural selection. DNA directs the chemical-mechanical unfolding of life. Consciousness and self, artifacts of the brain's firing neurons, are essentially inconsequential. This is a picture that has been fraying at the edges for some time. Progress in medicine, quantum physics, open-systems biology, consciousness studies, epistemology, the arts and philosophy all point in a radically different direction. But fresh, coherent narratives have not yet fully emerged out of this progress, and so the old model stubbornly endures.Hearts and Minds tells a tale of emerging discoveries – discoveries that restore our own self and consciousness as integral to the workings of the world.

Machiavelli - Alexander Lee
''A wonderfully assured and utterly riveting biography that captures not only the much-maligned Machiavelli, but also the spirit of his time and place. A monumental achievement.'' – Jessie Childs, author of God''s Traitors.‘A notorious fiend’, ‘generally odious’, ‘he seems hideous, and so he is.’ Thanks to the invidious reputation of his most famous work, The Prince, Niccolò Machiavelli exerts a unique hold over the popular imagination. But was Machiavelli as sinister as he is often thought to be? Might he not have been an infinitely more sympathetic figure, prone to political missteps, professional failures and personal dramas? Alexander Lee reveals the man behind the myth, following him from cradle to grave, from his father’s penury and the abuse he suffered at a teacher’s hands, to his marriage and his many affairs (with both men and women), to his political triumphs and, ultimately, his fall from grace and exile. In doing so, Lee uncovers hitherto unobserved connections between Machiavelli’s life and thought. He also reveals the world through which Machiavelli moved: from the great halls of Renaissance Florence to the court of the Borgia pope, Alexander VI, from the dungeons of the Stinche prison to the Rucellai gardens, where he would ...
