Podnětem k jejímu sepsání byla žádost, s níž se na rava Nisima obrátil jeho příbuzný, aby mu příběhy "našich nejlepších a nejvznešenějších učenců Talmudu blahé paměti" o Boží spravedlnosti dodal víru a poskytl útěchu v žalu ze smrti jeho syna. Výsledkem byla judeoarabská sbírka vyprávění, majících za cíl utěšit a poučit ve věcech náboženského práva a víry, zvláště pak v otázkách odměny a odplaty ve světě příštím.

Šem Tov ibn Falaquera (kolem 1225-1290), překladatel a autor řady hebrejských spisů popularizujících studium aristotelské filosofie, se do těchto debat aktivně zapojil především dvěma svými spisy: Dialogem o shodě mezi Tórou a světskou vědou, v němž se snaží obhájit filosofii jako legitimní zdroj poznání vedle židovské náboženské tradice, a dopisem, jímž vystoupil na obranu Maimonidova Průvodce tápajících během kontroverze, která se kolem tohoto díla rozpoutala na sklonku 80. let 13. století. Oba texty jsou v této publikaci představeny v českém překladu a zasazeny do kontextu Falaquerova díla a středověkých debat o vztahu mezi judaismem a filosofií.
