Humans of Prague - Princ Tomáš

Almost every day the photographer Tomáš Princ walks the streets of Prague and asks people he doesn‘t know: “Can I take your photograph?” This book presents the most interesting stories from his popular blog Humans of Prague from the past five years. The author presents the residents of the capital city and its visitors as thoughtful observers as well as witty commentators on their own lives, as storytellers of funny as well as sad stories, as self-confident protagonists, and as people who seem to be dwelling in past events. He discovers people who remember the great moments of last century as well as witnesses to fleeting moments in the present. The book Humans of Prague is a unique mosaic which reflects all of the colours in our lives: loss, disappointment and unfulfilled wishes, but also dreams, desires and private victories. With its architecture and history Prague is an exciting city, but if you look past its beauty, you‘ll discover that its magical attraction is created mainly by the people you meet there.

The Vedute of Prague - Roman Koucký

„Book „The Vedute of Prague“ describes the development of Prague cityscape in the period of last 5 centuries and emphasizes future possible scenarios how the city composition could be continuously developed in the 21st century,“ comments the content of the book Roman Koucký, the co-author of the book and the chief of the Metropolitan plan office, that prepares new urban plan of Prague, called Metropolitan plan. The overall visual composition of the city forms a significant part of its identity and the collective mental “city image”. The layered and diverse composition of the city “from medieval times up to now” is, as emphasized in the book’s first chapter, the reason for Prague’s inscription in the prestigious UNESCO Register of World Cultural Heritage. The second chapter describes how it is not only possible but indeed necessary to read the contemporary city/metropolis, and what to emphasis in supplementing its composition. The third chapter is a brief history of the formulation of Prague’s historic urban landscape, particularly in the turbulent 20th century, and an outline of a possible solution for its further development based on the Metropolitan Plan. It describes how it is possible to supplement the historically layered city with a contemporary cultural layer precisely as assumed in the wording of the UNESCO inscription from 1992. The attempt of the book is to place today’s views of the city into a historical context. For this reason, in the first excursus, the book provides a selection of historic Prague vedute from the collection of the City of Prague Museum. In the second excursus, the book presents selection from the archival collections of IPR Praha with views of the design of the city from the 20th century. The main part of the book represents in the 3rd excursus series of new Prague vedute: the panoramic photographs taken from 2014 to 2017 as the artistic vision of Ester Havlová, capturing of a crucial historical moment in the search for a vision of the future of Prague. The final, fourth excursus is a description of the entirely new depiction of the proposed future composition of the city, the ‘digital veduta’ using orthogonal imaging, used aswell in the Metropolitan plan of Prague proposal. The present book is published to mark the 25th anniversary of the inscription of the historic centre of Prague to the UNESCO Register of World Cultural and Natural Heritage. The book also commemorates the 5th anniversary of the founding of the Office of the Metropolitan Plan. For the text and illustrations, the materials used are results of research by the Office of the Metropolitan Plan, published in full in the volume Metropolitní plán, koncept odůvodnění 2014, supplemented by an extensive new research including methodological principles of defining the height composition of the city.

Prague Castle - Crossroads of History - Miloš Pokorný

Prague Castle is the oldest functioning residence of the head of state in Europe and as such has undergone profound changes during more than a thousand years of its existence. In addition to an outline of its architectural evolution the reader is offered fascinating glimpses of the turbulent history of Prague Castle. The book is packed with interesting information about the rulers, artists and politicians who entered its walls. Where it is necessary to provide a wider historical background, the book exceeds here and there the limits suggested by its title. Author Miloš Pokorny?(*1931) has profited from extensive experience gained during fifty years in the field of illustrated history publishing in London in assembling an unusual collection of images documenting the history of Prague Castle and the often fascinating events and personalities associated with it. Author has been working in British publishing since 1963 and gradually collected the extraordinary visual documentation offered in this attractive volume. “A really marvellous book: fair-minded with wonderfully clear text and captions, matched by beautiful, interesting and relevant photographs and illustrations (including wonderful maps).” Dr Mary Heimann University of Strathclyde, Glasgow

The Book of Prague - Ivana Myšková, Jan Zikmund

An ex-con on compassionate release revisits his old haunts, only to feel dispossessed by how much the city has changed...The son of political dissidents in Soviet-era Prague is condemned to a life of menial jobs, like working at a local abattoir, unable to imagine his prospects ever improving...A young shop assistant in a tourist-friendly antique shop imagines what Prague would now look like if Czechoslovakia had stood up to the Nazis...The stories collected in this anthology show Prague to be a city of myriad layers and multiple histories. Famous for its untouched, Gothic and Baroque architecture and its trapped-in-aspic charm, it is also a place that has lived through numerous traumas over the last century and learned to conceal its scars, perhaps a little too well. Just as its landmarks should be preserved, so should these hidden histories, and sometimes the best place to preserve them is in stories.Translated by Alž beta Belá nová , Geoffrey Chew, Melvyn Clarke, Graeme Dibble, Paul Kaye, Andrew Oakland, Justin Quinn, Julia and Peter Sherwood, Paul Wilson and Alex Zucker.Supported by the Czech Literary Centre and the Moravian Library.

Prague in the Heart is a collection of one hundred and eighty-nine true stories of events that have taken place in Prague over the past two hundred years. There was a battle for Czechoslovak Radio in the Vinohrady quarter of Prague. Czech patriots were executed in Kobylisy, Prague. Dissidents were detained at Ruzyně in Prague. And neighborhoods like Smíchov, Karlín and Libeň, once industrial areas, recorded the history of the Industrial Age - a time when poverty was intertwined with achievement, progress, and hope for a better future. Castle and Cathedral in Modern Prague: Longing for the Sacred in a Skeptical Age - Bruce R. Berglund

Prague in the early twentieth century was the city of cubists, surrealists, and the Good Soldier vejk. This book takes a new approach to interwar Prague by identifying religion as an integral part of the city s cultural history. As Prague emerged as a modern city and the Czech nation gained independence, Catholics, Protestants, and those who imagined a non-sectarian religion debated questions of faith and morality. Contrary to the conventional view of modern Czech elites as atheistic, Berglund shows how they were deeply concerned with the place of religion in modern life. Based upon a wide array of sources, the monograph explores the linkages between politics, theology, and architecture in the building of new symbols and a civil religion for the first Czechoslovak republic (1918-1938). Berglund views the contest of the sacred and secular in Prague within the broader context of religious change in twentieth-century Europe. His book lays a foundation for understanding both Czech culture of the interwar period as well as the nation s and Europe s religious history in the modern age. The author takes an approach that is both interdisciplinary and biographical by focusing on important figures in the politics and culture of interwar Prague, including Tomá Masaryk, the philosopher who became Czechoslovakia s first president; his daughter Alice, founding director of the Czechoslovak Red Cross; and Joze Plecnik, the Slovenian architect who directed the renovations of Prague Castle and designed one of the city s most renowned churches. This study of the beliefs and doubts held by these and other figures shows the transition from a (mostly) Catholic tradition to a new religious conception that was modern, humanistic, and detached from any institution much like the religious beliefs held by many Europeans today.

The Dark Side of Prague - Natálie Kocábová

Mladí bývají neklidní. S Natálií Kocábovou (1984) tomu nebylo jinak: prvotina v osmnácti, ve třiadvaceti pět knížek. K tomu sex, drogy a rock n roll. Tempo zvolnilo, ohlasy a stylizace zčásti opadaly, křeč vzpoury proti všemu metamorfovala v jedinečné chvíle údivu a pokory. Změnily se stravovací návyky : lehké maso postmoderny, kterým Natálie krmila agresivní vnějškovost svého psaní, vystřídal krvavý biftek vlastního života. Snění a fantazie vypověděly službu krátkodechým účelům a sblížily se s realitou. Iracionální se umazalo o konkrétní. Šestá kniha, The Dark Side of Prague, je toho očitým svědkem: pod vrstvou křiku citlivost, za vztekem milostnost, za nenávistí láska. Kulisy globální, aktéři v pohybu za svým stínem. Hledají tajemství světa a nastavují přitom obě tváře. A kdo hledá, najde: ostrovy harmonie vyplavené na hladinu chaosu. Radim Kopáč

Prague - Zdeněk Thoma, Michal Thoma, Soňa Thomová

The spirit of Prague is difficult to describe, although many have tried. For artists at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries the city was a black temptress hidden in the négligé of the white mists of the Vltava, a tempting and treacherous woman, a capricious harlot - a dark Salome who dances with the heads of her paramours. In 1902 the French sculptor Auguste Rodin said that Prague is one of the most sublime cities. Approximately thirty years later another Frenchman, the poet André Breton, proclaimed that Prague was the magic capital of old Europe. And in his celebrated book Magic Prague, written in the latter half of the 20th century, the Italian academic Angelo Maria Ripellino wrote when I seek another word for mystery, the only word I can find is Prague. And he described the city as a breeding ground for phantoms, an arena of sorcery … It is a trap which - once it takes hold with its mists, its black arts, its poisoned honey - does not let go, does not forgive.

Here are stories, legends, and scenes from the city s past and present, from the Jewish fable of the golem, a creature conjured from clay, to tales of German and Soviet invasions. The international array of writers ranges from Franz Kafka to Ivan Klíma to Bruce Chatwin, and includes the award-winning British playwright Tom Stoppard and former American Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, both of whom have Czech roots. Covering the city s venerable Jewish heritage, the glamour of the belle-époque period, World War II, Communist rule, the Prague Spring, the Velvet Revolution, and beyond, Prague Stories weaves a remarkable selection of fiction and nonfiction into a literary portrait of a fascinating city.

Prague Revisited - Muehlen Bernis

This book of over 200 photographs by Bernis and Peter von zur Muehlen covers the sweep of Prague’s history from World War II to the “Velvet Revolution.” The first chapter, illustrated by his mother’s black and white snapshots of the city, is an account of Peter’s life in Prague as a young boy during the months leading up to the end of World War II and of his family’s narrow escape days before the Red Army entered the city. The following chapters describe four visits by Bernis and Peter between 1985 and 1992, an epoch that saw Czechoslovakia’s transformation from Communist dictatorship to the restoration of democracy. The images reveal not only a glorious city, but also the many less prominent sites that give Prague its unique charm.Haunting images of the Old Jewish Cemetery remind the reader of the turbulent history of the Jews, nearly exterminated by the Nazis. One chapter traces the evolution of the Lennon Wall, a famous symbol of Prague’s long struggle for freedom. Lively accounts of the photographers’ travel experiences document a city slowly coming to terms with its own history. An afterword by Ori Z. Soltes, noted lecturer and author of twenty books, illuminates the city’s Judaeo-Christian history.

The Return of Agnes of Bohemia - Josef Tomáš, Petr Probst

The Return of Agnes Przemyslide was written by Josef Tomáš between 1996 and 1999, in Melbourne, Australia, under the influence of one of his visits to Prague, where-as he himself has implied-the sight of the city evoked in him its still-living historical continuity with all the horrors and beauties of its past. The canonization of Agnes Przemyslide, also called Agnes of Bohemia, which had occurred a few years earlier (on 12 November 1989), may have served as an additional impulse towards the book s creation. The dual storyline of The Return of Agnes Przemyslide-if it is possible, in this poetic allegory, to talk about a storyline-concerns a man, and a woman who has come from abroad at the man‘s invitation. Together they walk through Prague. They are human beings of the present, but it is as if they were at the same time the Czech king Wenceslaus I and his sister Agnes, meeting each other again after many centuries. As is well known, the relationship between Agnes and Wenceslaus was very warm and Agnes was often a mentor to her brother. The man and the woman are visiting, in Prague, those places that are somehow associated with Agnes, and the woman is constantly trying to find any evidence that she, in the distant past, was indeed Agnes. She is also seeking an answer to the question of why she has returned. Was it really because she had to come back to what she loved more than anything else?

The Grove of the Eumenides - Tomas Venclova

With The Grove of the Eumenides, the Lithuanian poet Tomas Venclova affirms his place as one of Europe’s greatest living poets, the heir to Akhmatova, Mandelstam and Milosz. Venclova’s masterful poetry upholds a vision of the world that enables us to endure the darkness of our time through his singular insights, ethical endurance and profound compassion. With classical grace, yet manifesting a deep commitment to remain a witness to the contemporary world, The Grove of the Eumenides is a collection of great wisdom.Venclova’s poetry addresses the desolate landscape of the aftermath of totalitarianism, as well as the ethical constants that allow for hope and perseverance. Bloodaxe published another selection of his poetry, The Junction, in 2008, bringing together new translations of his most recent work from that time as well as a selection of poems from his 1997 volume Winter Dialogue. While The Junction covered poems written while he was still in Lithuania before his forced emigration – and poems from his first decades in the US dealing with exile – The Grove of the Eumenides addresses ‘later life’ issues of democracy, memory, climate, travel, ethics and aging. There is no overlap between the two editions.

The World of Free Horses - Tomáš Míček

The world of horses is a peculiar intermediate realm: on one hand, horses embody embeddedness in nature, on the other hand, horses have been strongly associated with the human world for millennia. But there has always been a remnant of wildness and naturalness, of inner fire and dynamic vitality that cannot easily be tamed. The photographer Tomas [Week has been on the trail of the wildness and naturalness of horses for decades. Of course, horses are not the only theme of this talented photographer; he has already created the impressive books Magic Places of the Earth , Magic Stones and Trees of the World . Prague Spring - Simon Mawer

Prague Spring is a wonderfully atmospheric portrait of the city as well as a political and historical thriller with dashes of espionage. In the company of Czech student Lenka Konecková, he finds a way into the world of Czechoslovak youth, its hopes and its ideas. It seems that, for the first time, nothing is off limits behind the Iron Curtain.Yet the wheels of politics are grinding in the background. Trees of the Earth - Tomáš Míček

Why do trees fascinate us so much? Maybe because a tree highlights for us humans the center of creation: It is still nature , and yet already on the way to becoming an individual. You can meet a tree, communicate with it. While at the same time you are grateful that it remains quiet or, more precisely, that it speaks to you through its presence. Whenever you get tired of human chatter, you are only too happy to sit down under an old oak tree or maybe an even older olive tree to listen carefully to its eloquent silence. Tomáš Míček is a photographer whose many photo books have delighted his readers and who has captured the presence of trees and their magic in an almost mystical way, combining this intuitive approach with the highest level of technical photography.

Prague and Central Bohemia - Martin Ouředníček

The theme of socio-spatial differentiation has belonged to the core issues of social geography and urban studies for a long time. The general aim of the book is to describe and explain the current socio-spatial differentiation of Prague and the Central Bohemian Region and the processes that have influenced it during the first two decades of the twenty-first century. The book offers its own theoretical perspective on the structuration of spatial patterns and the social environment, a general view of regional development, and the main socio-spatial processes of the period after transition. Maps are an important part of this volume and concentrate crucial information within most chapters. Apart from the static information described in the maps, the book offers a look at current population processes”, as hinted at by the subtitle of the publication. The presentation and evaluation of processes” require more dynamic forms of cartographic visualisation and new methods of investigation. Among them, new tools of segregation measurement, various approaches for the use of mobile phone data, and an innovative form of population forecast are presented in the book. The common thread connecting all chapters is a regional focus on Prague and the Central Bohemian Region and a quantitative approach to comparing spatial patterns and regional processes.

Reflections and Speeches - Tomáš Baťa, Antonín Cekota

The book Reflections and Speeches is one of the basic sources of Tomas Bata´s philosophy. Tomas Bata never excelled in his desire to preserve his thoughts and write his memories. He lived mostly in the present and was constantly determined to face challenges on a daily basis. However, a typical characteristic of Tomas Bata was his ability to clearly describe the problem, name the situation and propose a solution. He was able to use these qualities well in short but always striking and encouraging speeches. This ability, backed up by his art to make perfect use of simple solutions and the so-called “common sense”, has led to many ingenious and timeless thoughts. The book presents a collection of speeches that Tomas Bata made to his colleagues, young men and women, organizations and the general public. The publication was created thanks to Antonin Cekota – a journalist and friend of Tomas Bata, who collected, arranged and put the reflections and speeches of his boss into a contemporary context. The book is the right choice for you, if you are interested in knowing the thinking of this world-class entrepreneur. It contains his most important reflections on business, politics, society, education, economy and the future. It is a piece of basic Bata literature and should be a part of every library.

The Descent of Man - Charles Darwin

In The Descent of Man Darwin addresses many of the issues raised by his notorious Origin of Species: finding in the traits and instincts of animals the origins of the mental abilities of humans, of language, of our social structures and our moral capacities, he attempts to show that there is no clear dividing line between animals and humans. Most importantly, he accounts for what Victorians called the â ˜racesâ ™ of mankind by means of what he calls sexual selection. This book presents a full explanation of Darwinâ ™s ideas about sexual selection, including his belief that many important characteristics of human beings and animals have emerged in response to competition for mates. This was a controversial work. Yet Darwin tried hard to avoid being branded as a radical revolutionary. He is steeped in Victorian sensibilities regarding gender and cultural differences: he sees human civilization as a move from barbarous savagery to modern gentlefolk, and women as more emotional and less intellectual than men, thus providing a biological basis for the social assumptions and prejudices of the day. The Descent of Man played a major role in the emergence of social Darwinism. This complete version of the first edition gives the modern reader an unparalleled opportunity to engage directly with Darwinâ ™s proposals, launched in the midst of continuing controversy over On the Origin of Species.Janet Browne is the author of the prize-winning biography, Charles Darwin: Voyaging and Charles Darwin: The Power of Place.
