Prague Spring - Simon Mawer

Prague Spring is a wonderfully atmospheric portrait of the city as well as a political and historical thriller with dashes of espionage. It is as brilliant as anything he has written, which is saying a lot The TimesIt s the summer of 1968, the year of love and hate, of Prague Spring and Cold War winter. Two English students, Ellie and James, set off to hitch-hike across Europe with no particular aim in mind but a continent, and themselves, to discover. Somewhere in southern Germany they decide, on a whim, to visit Czechoslovakia where Alexander Dubcek s socialism with a human face is smiling on the world.Meanwhile Sam Wareham, a first secretary at the British embassy in Prague, is observing developments in the country with a mixture of diplomatic cynicism and a young man s passion. In the company of Czech student Lenka Konecková, he finds a way into the world of Czechoslovak youth, its hopes and its ideas. It seems that, for the first time, nothing is off limits behind the Iron Curtain.Yet the wheels of politics are grinding in the background. The Soviet leader, Leonid Brezhnev is making demands of Dubcek and the Red Army is massed on the borders. How will the looming disaster affect those fragile lives caught up in the invasion?

Coby páté a nejstarší evangelium o Ježíšově životě je zřejmě sepsal odpadlík z apoštolské družiny – Jidáš Iškariotský, jenž svého učitele před ukřižováním zradil. „A bude vám to někdo věřit?“ – ukázka z textu

Anatomie rodu - Simon Mawer - audiokniha

Literární světoběžník, jehož nadšení děním v zemi uprostřed Evropy okouzlilo i naše čtenáře, se v románové novince zasazené do nejtužší éry viktoriánské Anglie zdánlivě obrací proti všemu, co zatím napsal. A přece je to nezaměnitelně on. Spisovatelovo pátrání v uzlových bodech vlastního rodokmenu ukazuje mezní situace žen-matek, jež byly v tehdejších poměrech přinuceny být samoživitelkami a bez pomoci mužů řešit dennodenní bitvy kreativně. A pragmaticky správně, protože opravnou druhou šanci dějiny člověku neposkytují. Románová kronika, v níž autor Skleněného pokoje vynesl na světlo záseky a zdánlivé suky v historii svého rodu, oslavuje neokázalé ženské odhodlání prolomit viktoriánské předsudky. „Bravurně pojatý příběh přibližuje těžkosti i křehké opory každodenního života v devatenáctém století. Mawer v něm působivě obhajuje roli vyprávění jakožto důležitý nástroj v našem poznání dějinných zákonitostí.“ – Daily Mail.

Anatomie rodu - Simon Mawer

The Greengrocer and His TV : The Culture of Communism after the 1968 Prague Spring - Paulina Bren

The 1968 Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia brought an end to the Prague Spring and its promise of socialism with a human face. Before the invasion, Czech reformers had made unexpected use of television to advance political and social change. In its aftermath, Communist Party leaders employed the medium to achieve normalization, pitching television stars against political dissidents in a televised spectacle that defined the times. The Greengrocer and His TV offers a new cultural history of communism from the Prague Spring to the Velvet Revolution that reveals how state-endorsed ideologies were played out on television, particularly through soap opera-like serials. In focusing on the small screen, Paulina Bren looks to the normal of normalization, to the everyday experience of late communism.

The Girl Who Fell From The Sky - Simon Mawer

An utterly gripping tale of love and espionage in Occupied France by the Man Booker Prize shortlisted author of The Glass Room (Daily Mail)Marian Sutro is an outsider: the daughter of a diplomat, brought up on the shores of Lake Geneva and in England, half French, half British, naive yet too clever for her own good. But when she is recruited from her desk job by SOE, the Special Operations Executive, to go undercover in wartime France, it seems her hybrid status - and fluent French - will be of service to a greater, more dangerous cause.Trained in sabotage, dead-drops, how to perform under interrogation and how to kill, Marian parachutes into south-west France, her official mission to act as a Resistance courier. But her real destination is Paris, where she must seek out family friend Clément Pelletier, once the focus of her adolescent desires. A nuclear physicist engaged in the race for a new and terrifying weapon, he is of urgent significance to her superiors. As she struggles through the strange, lethal landscape of the Occupation towards this reunion, what completes her training is the understanding that war changes everything, and neither love nor fatherland may be trusted. There are many shades of Graham Greene here... [The Girl Who Fell From the Sky] delivers its story with the same delicate, stropped-razor deadliness that creeps up on you like Harry Lime in the shadows, nastily irresistible -Financial Times Mawer cranks up the tension; as spy stuff this is as good as Le Carré or Eric Ambler, no higher praise possible -The Scotsman

The Vedute of Prague - Roman Koucký

„Book „The Vedute of Prague“ describes the development of Prague cityscape in the period of last 5 centuries and emphasizes future possible scenarios how the city composition could be continuously developed in the 21st century,“ comments the content of the book Roman Koucký, the co-author of the book and the chief of the Metropolitan plan office, that prepares new urban plan of Prague, called Metropolitan plan. The overall visual composition of the city forms a significant part of its identity and the collective mental “city image”. The layered and diverse composition of the city “from medieval times up to now” is, as emphasized in the book’s first chapter, the reason for Prague’s inscription in the prestigious UNESCO Register of World Cultural Heritage. The second chapter describes how it is not only possible but indeed necessary to read the contemporary city/metropolis, and what to emphasis in supplementing its composition. The third chapter is a brief history of the formulation of Prague’s historic urban landscape, particularly in the turbulent 20th century, and an outline of a possible solution for its further development based on the Metropolitan Plan. It describes how it is possible to supplement the historically layered city with a contemporary cultural layer precisely as assumed in the wording of the UNESCO inscription from 1992. The attempt of the book is to place today’s views of the city into a historical context. For this reason, in the first excursus, the book provides a selection of historic Prague vedute from the collection of the City of Prague Museum. In the second excursus, the book presents selection from the archival collections of IPR Praha with views of the design of the city from the 20th century. The main part of the book represents in the 3rd excursus series of new Prague vedute: the panoramic photographs taken from 2014 to 2017 as the artistic vision of Ester Havlová, capturing of a crucial historical moment in the search for a vision of the future of Prague. The final, fourth excursus is a description of the entirely new depiction of the proposed future composition of the city, the ‘digital veduta’ using orthogonal imaging, used aswell in the Metropolitan plan of Prague proposal. The present book is published to mark the 25th anniversary of the inscription of the historic centre of Prague to the UNESCO Register of World Cultural and Natural Heritage. The book also commemorates the 5th anniversary of the founding of the Office of the Metropolitan Plan. For the text and illustrations, the materials used are results of research by the Office of the Metropolitan Plan, published in full in the volume Metropolitní plán, koncept odůvodnění 2014, supplemented by an extensive new research including methodological principles of defining the height composition of the city.

Prague in the Heart (978-80-7252-605-5)

Kniha – autor Renáta Fučíková, 195 stran, anglicky, brožovaná bez přebalu lesklá - česky Prague in the Heart is a collection of one hundred and eighty-nine true stories of events that have taken place in Prague over the past two hundred years. They show that the recent past has been no less dramatic and convoluted than in medieval times. Franz Kafka, Jaroslav Seifert, Bohumil Hrabal, Jaroslav Hašek, Jan Patočka, Jiří Dienstbier and Václav Havel were all residents of Prague. Occupying armies marched through Prague. There was a battle for Czechoslovak Radio in the Vinohrady quarter of Prague. Czech patriots were executed in Kobylisy, Prague. Dissidents were detained at Ruzyně in Prague. A Reich-Protector was assassinated in Prague. And neighborhoods like Smíchov, Karlín and Libeň, once industrial areas, recorded the history of the Industrial Age – a time when poverty was intertwined with achievement, progress, and hope for a better future.

Prague in the Heart is a collection of one hundred and eighty-nine true stories of events that have taken place in Prague over the past two hundred years. A Reich Protector was assassinated in Prague. And neighborhoods like Smíchov, Karlín and Libeň, once industrial areas, recorded the history of the Industrial Age - a time when poverty was intertwined with achievement, progress, and hope for a better future. Prague in the Heart is not an exhaustive historical study, but a remarkable literary statement from a renowned author who loves her city. Anglická verze titulu Praha v srdci.

Time Out: Prague

As Prague settles into the European Union club, its rebirth as a vibrant Western-style city continues to blossom, with the traces of East bloc communism increasingly hard to uncover. But the City of 100 Spires is also returning to its roots as a decadent, jubilant place that made the word bohemia into a common noun. The smoky jazz clubs, rowdy, cruisy bars and stunning symphony halls have been restored to the spirit and role they once served. And it s fast making up for lost time with local designers and artists creating confrontational work at dozens of galleries while the frisson of the Cold War remains in Soviet-era meat shops and chilling monuments. *Sightseeing in Prague *Prague hotels *Prague restaurants *Prague bars *Prague shops *Prague maps

Castle and Cathedral in Modern Prague: Longing for the Sacred in a Skeptical Age - Bruce R. Berglund

Prague in the early twentieth century was the city of cubists, surrealists, and the Good Soldier vejk. This book takes a new approach to interwar Prague by identifying religion as an integral part of the city s cultural history. As Prague emerged as a modern city and the Czech nation gained independence, Catholics, Protestants, and those who imagined a non-sectarian religion debated questions of faith and morality. Contrary to the conventional view of modern Czech elites as atheistic, Berglund shows how they were deeply concerned with the place of religion in modern life. Based upon a wide array of sources, the monograph explores the linkages between politics, theology, and architecture in the building of new symbols and a civil religion for the first Czechoslovak republic (1918-1938). Berglund views the contest of the sacred and secular in Prague within the broader context of religious change in twentieth-century Europe. His book lays a foundation for understanding both Czech culture of the interwar period as well as the nation s and Europe s religious history in the modern age. The author takes an approach that is both interdisciplinary and biographical by focusing on important figures in the politics and culture of interwar Prague, including Tomá Masaryk, the philosopher who became Czechoslovakia s first president; his daughter Alice, founding director of the Czechoslovak Red Cross; and Joze Plecnik, the Slovenian architect who directed the renovations of Prague Castle and designed one of the city s most renowned churches. This study of the beliefs and doubts held by these and other figures shows the transition from a (mostly) Catholic tradition to a new religious conception that was modern, humanistic, and detached from any institution much like the religious beliefs held by many Europeans today.

NEJPROSLULEJŠÍ PRAŽSKÉ PAMĚTIHODNOSTI OPŘEDENÉ LEGENDAMI Půvaby Prahy tkví hluboko v její historii a nezaměnitelné atmosféře. Once you set foot in its dark recesses, you never manage to free yourself from its magical embrace. You fall in love. All your senses come alive. Prague - Zdeněk Thoma, Michal Thoma, Soňa Thomová

The spirit of Prague is difficult to describe, although many have tried. For artists at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries the city was a black temptress hidden in the négligé of the white mists of the Vltava, a tempting and treacherous woman, a capricious harlot - a dark Salome who dances with the heads of her paramours. In 1902 the French sculptor Auguste Rodin said that Prague is one of the most sublime cities. Approximately thirty years later another Frenchman, the poet André Breton, proclaimed that Prague was the magic capital of old Europe. And in his celebrated book Magic Prague, written in the latter half of the 20th century, the Italian academic Angelo Maria Ripellino wrote when I seek another word for mystery, the only word I can find is Prague. And he described the city as a breeding ground for phantoms, an arena of sorcery … It is a trap which - once it takes hold with its mists, its black arts, its poisoned honey - does not let go, does not forgive.

Humans of Prague - Princ Tomáš

Almost every day the photographer Tomáš Princ walks the streets of Prague and asks people he doesn‘t know: “Can I take your photograph?” This book presents the most interesting stories from his popular blog Humans of Prague from the past five years. The author presents the residents of the capital city and its visitors as thoughtful observers as well as witty commentators on their own lives, as storytellers of funny as well as sad stories, as self-confident protagonists, and as people who seem to be dwelling in past events. He discovers people who remember the great moments of last century as well as witnesses to fleeting moments in the present. The book Humans of Prague is a unique mosaic which reflects all of the colours in our lives: loss, disappointment and unfulfilled wishes, but also dreams, desires and private victories. With its architecture and history Prague is an exciting city, but if you look past its beauty, you‘ll discover that its magical attraction is created mainly by the people you meet there.

Prague in the Reign of Rudolph II - Eliška Fučíková

Prague in the Reign of Rudolph II takes readers back to the days of the Habsburg Emperor Rudolph II (1576-1611) when Prague became the metropolis of the Holy Roman Empire, and when the imperial court was a much sought-after milieu for scholars and artists, as well as magicians and adventurers. As the author notes, almost anyone of importance from inside and even outside the empire had to spend some time in Prague if they wanted to make their name. After an introduction in the form of an historical outline, the reader is guided on an engaging and informative stroll through Rudolphine Prague, which to this day remains full of mystery and legend. On this tour through the period and its monuments, including a peek into the famous imperial collection, the reader is guided by Eliška Fučíková, an outstanding and internationally reknowned expert on Rudolphine art. Her lively and authoritative account is accompanied by about a hundred colour plates of buildings and historic monuments dating from the late Renaissance, together with other graphic documentation, an index of locations with a map of Rudolphine monuments, and an overview of prominent figures.

Prague Revisited - Muehlen Bernis

This book of over 200 photographs by Bernis and Peter von zur Muehlen covers the sweep of Prague’s history from World War II to the “Velvet Revolution.” The first chapter, illustrated by his mother’s black and white snapshots of the city, is an account of Peter’s life in Prague as a young boy during the months leading up to the end of World War II and of his family’s narrow escape days before the Red Army entered the city. The following chapters describe four visits by Bernis and Peter between 1985 and 1992, an epoch that saw Czechoslovakia’s transformation from Communist dictatorship to the restoration of democracy. The images reveal not only a glorious city, but also the many less prominent sites that give Prague its unique charm.Haunting images of the Old Jewish Cemetery remind the reader of the turbulent history of the Jews, nearly exterminated by the Nazis. One chapter traces the evolution of the Lennon Wall, a famous symbol of Prague’s long struggle for freedom. Lively accounts of the photographers’ travel experiences document a city slowly coming to terms with its own history. An afterword by Ori Z. Soltes, noted lecturer and author of twenty books, illuminates the city’s Judaeo-Christian history.
