WITH A NEW FOREWORD BY AMY LIPTROTSHORTLISTED FOR THE BOOKER PRIZE 1994WINNER OF THE SALTIRE SOCIETY LITERARY AWARD 1994''Intimate, humorous, effortlessly combining the strands of history and folklore, the past and the present, this is a deceptively simple book, like a tale told to a child. But its echoes sound on unforgettably. A whole universe is created from a grain of Orkney sand'' IndependentIn this novel set on the fictitious island of Norday in the Orkneys, George Mackay Brown beckons us into the imaginary world of the young Thorfinn Ragnarson, the son of a crofter. In his day-dreams he relives the history of this island people, travelling back in time to join Viking adventurers at the court of the Byzantine Emperor in Constantinople, then accompanying a Falstaffian knight to the battle of Bannockburn.Thorfinn wakes to the twentieth century and a community whose way of life, steeped in legend and tradition, has remained unchanged for centuries. But as the boy grows up - and falls in love with a vivacious and mysterious stranger - the transforming effect of modern civilization brings momentous and irreversible changes to the island. Winter & Christmas Poems - George Mackay Brown
This beautiful volume of winter and Christmas-themed verses will be a hugely welcome addition to the George Mackay Brown canon. The poet and novelist lived and worked all his life in Stromness on Orkney: the islands being the sole inspiration for the huge and immensely rich body of work that he left behind at his death in 1997. Many of Mackay Brown''s poems are set in the winter months and we have made here a selection of some of the most evocative. Seamus Heaney wrote of him: ''George Mackay Brown has added uniquely and steadfastly to the riches of poetry in English: his sense of the world and his way with words are powerfully at one with each other. The book has Orcadian woodcuts by the artist Kath Littler, including a cover illustration ''Hoy Hare''.

Magnus - George Mackay Brown
Vroucná báj o narození, prozření, smrti a zmrtvýchvstání krajana-mírotvorce vede k docenění rodné země: pravlasti dobra i všeho vnitřního utrpení, kterého hrouda pod našima nohama poznala daleko víc, než každý z nás v životě zjistí. George Mackay Brown převyprávěl ságu o středověkém šlechtici - mimo jiné figurujícím ve folkloru této výspy Evropy jako nemrtvý přízrak - s odvahou, jež se směle měří se zanícenými výkony dávných bardů s harfou.

George Mackay Brown - Maggie Fergusson
George Mackay Brown was one of Scotland''s greatest twentieth-century writers, but in person a bundle of paradoxes. He had a wide international reputation, but hardly left his native Orkney. A prolific poet, admired by such fellow poets as Seamus Heaney, Ted Hughes and Charles Causley, and hailed by the composer Peter Maxwell Davies as ''the most positive and benign influence ever on my own efforts at creation'', he was also an accomplished novelist (shortlisted for the 1994 Booker Prize for Beside the Ocean of Time) and a master of the short story. When he died in 1996, he left behind an autobiography as deft as it is ultimately uninformative. ''The lives of artists are as boring and also as uniquely fascinating as any or every other life,'' he claimed. Never a recluse, he appeared open to his friends, but probably revealed more of himself in his voluminous correspondence with strangers. He never married - indeed he once wrote, ''I have never been in love in my life.'' But some of his most poignant letters and poems were written to Stella Cartwright, ''the Muse of Rose Street'', the gifted but tragic figure to whom he was once engaged and with whom ... For the Islands I Sing - George Mackay Brown
George’s memory is inseparable from Orkney, where he was born the youngest child of a poor family and which he rarely left. His mother was a beautiful woman who spoke only Gaelic and his father was a wit, mimic and singer, who also doubled as postman and tailor. Tuberculosis framed George’s early life and kept him in a kind of limbo. He discovered alcohol which gave him insights into the workings of the mind. While attending the University of Edinburgh he came into contact with Goodsir Smith, MacDiarmid and Norman MacCaig – and Stella Cartwright with whom perhaps all of them were in love. By the time of his death in 1996 he was recognised as one of the great writers of his time and country.

Queen Soraya, Her Divorce Destroyed A Dynasty - George Mackay Brown
Soraya Bakhtiari was born in Isfahan in 1932 to a German Protestant mother and Iranian Muslim father. After schooling in Iran and Switzerland, she was a student in London when, aged eighteen, she married the Shah of Iran in 1951. Three months later, a revolution headed by Prime Minister Mosaddeq to nationalise the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company was defeated in a coup d''état organised by the American CIA. Soraya’s success as Empress – creating sanatoriums, a special women’s and children’s hospital in Tehran, a girls’ summer school on the Caspian Sea, evening literacy classes, and a publishing house translating classic books into Farsi, resulted in her becoming the most popular member of the royal family. The Shah, his mother and sisters bitterly resented having to play second fiddle. However, not having conceived an heir in seven years became the basis for a bitter divorce. The Shah failed to persuade Soraya he should take a second wife. He publicly blamed her for their breakup. Underestimating her popularity, the decline in the Shah’s reputation began. Subsequent mistakes made during his rule accumulated over the years until a demonstration of over six million people protesting against his regime forced him into exile.

Beside the Ocean of Time - George Mackay Brown
Thorfinn Ragnarson is the daydreaming son of a tenant farmer, avoiding both work and school despite the best efforts of family, friends and neighbours. Instead, the boy dreams up elaborate historical fantasies of himself as a Viking traveller, a freedom-fighter for Bonnie Prince Charlie and the colleague of a Falstaffian knight who participates in the Battle of Bannockburn. He is then hurled into the future as Thor, who returns to the Orkneys as an adult and recalls his internment in a German POW camp, where he discovered his writing skills. Thor also reflects on the history of Orkney, the links between dreaming and writing and the whims of fate. In this beautiful and haunting novel, Brown’s lyrical descriptions and gift for local colour capture, as ever, the myth-drenched magic of his native islands.

How to be Real - Stephen Frosh
How to be Real tackles one of the most urgent questions: how can we thrive in a world that is so troubling and confusing? We are constantly being told that we must be ‘authentic’ and ‘real’ whilst our sense of reality is being undermined, fragmenting our experiences and dividing people from each other. In the face of such dilemmas Frosh argues that gaining a sense of reality requires us to face the complexity of modern life. We must learn to think more clearly and bravely about it, and to allow ourselves to develop a depth of feeling that may often be uncomfortable or even distressing to live with. By working alongside thinkers such as Freud, Winnicott and Klein, Frosh argues that we must look to what connects us and appreciate how authenticity depends on the quality of relationships we form with each other. Consequently, ‘how to be real’ has political as well as psychological and ethical implications. It is out of such disruptive complexity that human depth and relational integrity arise. Frosh pursues this through an exploration of childhood and the development of the self, of why and how we put up defences against reality, and of what hate means. ... Unknown localization key: "more"

How to Be - Adam Nicolson
A TIMES BOOK OF THE YEARWhat is the nature of things? Must I think my own way through the world? What is justice? How can I be me? How should we treat each other? Before the Greeks, the idea of the world was dominated by god-kings and their priests, in a life ruled by imagined metaphysical monsters. 2,500 years ago, in a succession of small eastern Mediterranean harbour-cities, that way of thinking began to change. Men (and some women) decided to cast off mental subservience and apply their own worrying and thinking minds to the conundrums of life. These great innovators shaped the beginnings of philosophy. Through the questioning voyager Odysseus, Homer explored how we might navigate our way through the world. Heraclitus in Ephesus was the first to consider the interrelatedness of things. Xenophanes of Colophon was the first champion of civility. In Lesbos, the Aegean island of Sappho and Alcaeus, the early lyric poets asked themselves ‘How can I be true to myself?’ In Samos, Pythagoras imagined an everlasting soul and took his ideas to Italy where they flowered again in surprising and radical forms.Prize-winning and bestselling writer Adam Nicolson travels through this transforming world and asks what light these ... A hysterical, irreverent exploration of one of America’s most painful and enduring issues.” — Melissa Harris-PerryThe Onion’s Baratunde Thurston shares his 30-plus years of expertise in being black, with helpful essays like “How to Be the Black Friend,” “How to Speak for All Black People,” “How To Celebrate Black History Month,” and more, in this satirical guide to race issues. How to be a Bad Christian - Dave Tomlinson
In the course of his work as a vicar, Dave Tomlinson meets lots of people who describe themselves as ''not good enough'' to be a Christian, thinking that faith involves going to church a lot, or believing in a list of strange things, or following certain rules. But being a Christian isn''t about any of that - and actually, following Jesus is a lot easier, and more fun, than most people think...In this handbook to Christianity for people who describe themselves as spiritual but not necessarily religious, Dave sketches out some key practices for how to be a ''bad'' Christian, including how to talk to God without worrying about prayer, how to read the Bible without turning off your brain, and how to think with your soul rather than trying to follow rules. With beautiful illustrations from artist Rob Pepper, this is an accessible, light-hearted book, but one with a powerful invitation: to be the person you''ve always wanted to be, following a God you''ve always hoped is on your side.

How to Be Healthy - Galén
Timeless wisdom about how to be healthy in body and mind from one of the greatest physicians of the ancient worldThe second-century Greek physician Galen—the most famous doctor in antiquity after Hippocrates—is a central figure in Western medicine. A talented doctor, surgeon, writer, philosopher, teacher, pharmacologist, and inventor, Galen attended the court of Marcus Aurelius, living through outbreaks of plague (likely smallpox) that devastated the Roman Empire. He also served as physician for professional gladiators, boasting that only two fighters died during his first year (his predecessor had lost sixteen). In writings that provided the foundation of Western medicine up to the nineteenth century, Galen created a unified account of health and disease. In How to Be Healthy, practicing physician and classical historian Katherine Van Schaik presents a collection of Galen’s enduring insights about how we can take care of our bodies and minds, prevent disease, and reach a healthy old age. Although we now know that many of Galen’s ideas about physiology are wrong, How to Be Healthy shows that much of his advice remains sound. In these selections from his writings, presented in fresh translations, Galen discusses the art of medicine, exercise and diet, the mind-body connection, the ... Unknown localization key: "more"

How do we define patriotism in a diverse society? What divides us and what brings us together? Why do we feel uncomfortable celebrating our country’s history? How to be a Patriot offers a new way of understanding our collective identity in a country wracked by division and brimming with markers of selfhood – faith, race, gender, age, sexuality.Sunder Katwala himself grew up with some questions to work through. As a half-Indian, Irish Catholic child of the NHS, the chequered history of post-imperial Britain seemed very personal to him, but he realised that with that background he could hardly be anything but British, and proud of it too.His timely and clear-eyed analysis seeks to navigate the many crises of this increasingly disunited kingdom: extremism and integration after 7/7; fear of immigration and the deep divides of Brexit; the resurgence of online racism; and the debate over our cultural heritage. Equipped with a nuanced understanding of the subject and a wealth of supporting data, he sets out to foster a more open and tolerant society: one that welcomes alternative ideas and cultures rather than shutting them out.Ultimately, How to be a Patriot is a rousing story of lives lived together and shared values.
