When American editor Hugo Gernsback began publishing Amazing Stories, the first ever monthly magazine devoted to the emerging genre of science fiction, in April 1926 in New York City, he had no choice but to reprint the earlier works of classics by Jules Verne, H. G. Wells and Edgar Allan Poe in the first nine issues. It was only in the following years that new names appeared in the pages of the magazine.
