While rapid progress is being made in the field of autonomous road vehicles the majority of actions and the research address the technical challenges, with little attention to the physical, perceptual, cognitive and emotional needs of humans. This book fills a gap in the knowledge by providing an easily understandable introduction to the needs and desires of people in relation to autonomous vehicles. The book is "human centred design" led, adding an important human perspective to the primarily technology-driven debates about autonomous vehicles. When American editor Hugo Gernsback began publishing Amazing Stories, the first ever monthly magazine devoted to the emerging genre of science fiction, in April 1926 in New York City, he had no choice but to reprint the earlier works of classics by Jules Verne, H. G. Wells and Edgar Allan Poe in the first nine issues. It was only in the following years that new names appeared in the pages of the magazine. The very first new author to appear in Amazing Stories was Miles J. Breuer, whose short story "The Man with the Odd Head" Gernsback included in the January 1927 issue just after Wells' completion of The First Men in the Moon. But the life story and literary work of the now forgotten Nebraska doctor, who was considered a true star of the genre by American science fiction readers at the turn of the 1920s and 1930s, is much more varied and interesting. He didn't start writing for Amazing Stories; he published his first story that could be classified as science fiction almost two decades earlier, but without readers noticing. Not only that, but many of his literary works, including early short stories (only later published in science fiction magazines), were originally written and published in Czech under the name Miloslav J. Breuer. He is interesting and relevant today because he may have been the first to come up with the idea of autonomous, self-driving cars. Životní příběh i literární dílo dnes zapomenutého lékaře z Nebrasky, kterého američtí čtenáři science fiction na přelomu 20. a 30. let považovali za opravdovou hvězdu žánru je ale mnohem pestřejší a zajímavější. Nezačal totiž psát až pro Amazing Stories, svou první povídku, kterou bychom mohli řadit k science fiction, vydal o téměř dvě desetiletí dříve, aniž by si jí ale čtenáři všimli. A nejenom to, řadu ze svých literárních děl, včetně raných povídek (teprve později vydaných v science fiction magazínech), původně napsal a vydal už česky pod jménem Miloslav J. Breuer. Dnes je zajímavý a aktuální i tím, že možná jako první přišel s myšlenkou autonomních, samořídících automobilů.

The view of the "human" and "non-human" as oppositional categories is a remnant of essentially modernist thinking. The authors thus want to contribute to the hybridization of social sciences and throughout the book they deal with ontological, epistemological and thematical shifts stemming from the hybridization. If the non-humans does not exist as a negation, the boundary between the two becomes unclear and overlapping.
