Richard Brautigan, americký spisovatel označovaný jako poslední a nejliterárnější z beatniků, je českým čtenářům dobře znám. Již v roce 1986 Olga Špilarová přeložila jeho knížku V melounovém cukru, která se stala v tehdejším Československu kultovní. Brilantní próza Detektivem v Babylónu byla poprvé vydána v roce 1977 s podtitulem Román soukromého očka roku 1942. Už obálka prvního vydání napovídá, že se nebude jednat o klasický detektivní příběh, ale o vyprávění, které si tento žánr bere jako odrazový můstek k vytvoření absurdního příběhu, v němž se vedle nespočtu humorných situací obnažuje lidská existence. Ne nadarmo byla novela nazvána metafyzickou detektivkou. Hlavní postava C. Card je vystaven neutěšené životní situaci (nuzné podmínky, dluhy, hlad) a zároveň prožívá blaženost vyvolávanou sněním. Kdykoli je schopen "přepnout" a ocitnout se ve starověkém Babylónu, kde je vždy úspěšný a vždy po boku krásné přítelkyně Nana-dirat. Ovšem popis dění jednoho odpoledne a večera, ve kterém C. Card po velmi dlouhé době plní zakázku, se může jevit přinejmenším stejně absurdním jako svět snění. Vykreslení všech postav i situací je nesmírně trefné a vtipné.

Anotace: Jedna z Brautiganových variací na žánry populárního čtiva; v Hawklinské nestvůře si přisvojuje atributy gotického či černého románu - ve sklepení starého domu číhá tajemná nestvůra, jež ohrožuje život krásných žen; proto je třeba nalézt a najmout zabijáky, kteří si s nestvůrou poradí. Že se k jejich poslání přidruží i milostná zápletka, je nevyhnutelné.
