Je známo, že nepříznivé okolnosti dokážou zkazit i události, jež by jinak byly velmi příjemné.Musím vám, milí posluchači, hned na začátku šetrně sdělit následující: Pokud jste si druhý díl Řady nešťastných příhod pořídili v naději, že uslyšíte, jak sourozenci Baudelairovi konečně žijí šťastně, můžete jej klidně zase odložit a poslechnout si raději něco jiného. Tři Baudelairovy sirotky dostal do péče jejich vzdálený příbuzný, herpetolog Dr. Montgomery. „Strýček Monty“, jak se mu říká, je malý, obtloustlý muž s kulatým, červeným obličejem.
