Pak než si poslechnete byť jen jedinou větu, měli byste vědět toto: Violet, Klaus a Sunny jsou dobrosrdeční, ale jejich život je plný smůly a utrpení. Všechny příběhy těchto tří dětí jsou nešťastné a ubohé a nejspíš vás naplní hlubokým zoufalstvím. Pokud se vám, milí čtenáři, líbí příběhy se šťastným koncem, pak si raději poslechněte nějakou jinou audioknihu. V téhle nejenže nenajdete šťastný konec, ale ani šťastný začátek a jen velmi málo šťastných událostí mezi tím. Je to proto, že v životě tří sourozenců Baudelairových se přihodilo jen málo šťastných věcí. Violet, Klaus a Sunny byli chytré děti, milé a bystré, ale byli nesmírně nešťastné. Téměř všechno, co se jim přihodilo, přinášelo smůlu, trápení, zoufalství a beznaděj. Dalo by se říci, že útrapy přitahují jako magnet: zničující požár, škaredé oblečení, studená ovesná kaše k snídani, chladnokrevný zlosyn a úklady, které je mají připravit o majetek. Mrzí mě a omlouvám se, že vám to vyprávím, ale jejich příběh musím vylíčit podle pravdy a nic nezamlčet. S veškerou úctou Lemony Snicket.
