Indeed, THAT Stoker who wrote the epistolary novel Dracula – the very first novel that dealt with a vampire legend. Mladý anglický právník Jonathan Harker odjíždí do Transylvánie k hraběti Drákulovi, aby s ním projednal koupi domů v Londýně. Klasický román Brama Stokera dráždí k nejrůznějším adaptacím už přes sto dvacet let. Vábení neodolal ani vynikající francouzský kreslíř Georges Bess, kterého český čtenář zná z komiksu Bílý láma, k němuž psal scénář Alejandro Jodorowsky. Mladý anglický právník Jonathan Harker odjíždí do Transylvánie k hraběti Drákulovi, aby s ním projednal koupi domů v Londýně. Po příjezdu hradu se ocitá uprostřed řady děsivých událostí, ocitne se několikrát v ohrožení života. Hrabě se mu zdá divný od první chvíle, nic nejí ani nepije, jedná s ním pouze v noci, není vidět v zrcadle a zjevně ho dráždí pohled na krev – jen náhodný dotek křížku zachrání Hackera před Drákulou, když se řízne při holení. Harker se rozhodne utéct z podivného místa zpět domů do Londýna, kde se zanedlouho objeví i Drákula. Zběsilý lov na upíry může začít. Drákula okouzluje již několik generací čtenářů. Poprvé vyšel v roce 1897. Vampýři nejsou původním Stokerovým nápadem. Dávno existovali legendy o podivných bytostech, které se živily lidskou krví. Jednou z inspirací byla i novela irského autora Josepha Sheridana Le Fanu Carmilla. Audiokniha:,Po devíti krocích jsme dospěli ke konci – přímo do srdce Temnoty. A je příznačné, že nás vítá ikonický autor z Irska jménem Bram Stoker. A s Drákulou po boku. Tedy – ne tak docela. Drakulův host je jedna z povídek, které vydala vdova po něm až po jeho smrti. A ač v názvu figuruje jméno knížete temnot, osobně se vlastně na scéně vůbec neobjeví. Ani Jonathan Harker, tedy skutečný host, nedostává prostor. Tato povídka představuje vlastně úvod do románu Drákula. Jde o zlehka přepracovanou verzi jedné z kapitol známého románu, která musela být obětována během přípravy Drákuly k tisku. Úplně poslední temnou povídkou je Komnata ve věži, kterou napsal Angličan Edward Frederic Benson. Dracula’s Guest is one of the stories published only after Stoker’s death, and even though Dracula is in the title, he will not make it into the story. Interestingly enough, Jonathan Harker, the actual guest – also does not appear. This short story is actually an original introduction to Dracula. It is a slightly altered version of a chapter of the novel that was discarded during preparations for print. The final story is The Room in the Tower, by Edward Frederic Benson. Strange, unsettling atmosphere is present right from the beginning, and it intensifies via recurrent nightmares – right up to the shocking climax of the final scene. It is a relatively short masterpiece by Howard Phillips Lovecraft, the author who is a pillar of our series. The Outsider is one of his most often published short stories, and it has proven to be very popular with both readers and listeners. Written in 1921, it was published five years later in Weird Tales magazine (April 1926). Lovecraft himself thought that he came near to Poe’s style in this story (the first paragraphs are an echo of Berenice, by E. A. Poe, and the inspiration of, The Masque of Red Death is also pretty clear). This short story is probably the most elaborate story by Lovecraft, with echoes of his gurus and multifaceted references. Súmračná krajina je v mnohom podobná tej našej, no dá sa do nej vstúpiť len v snoch. Žijú v nej bohabojní a mierumilovní ľudia, ktorí však z času na čas podľahnú márnomyseľnosti a hriechu. Vďaka ôsmim fantazijným poviedkam z pera slávneho írskeho dramatika a spisovateľa Brama Stokera (1847 - 1912) ju teraz môžeme navštíviť aj my a spoznať nástrahy, ktorým musia obyvatelia tejto nezvyčajnej krajiny čeliť. Ako všetky dobré rozprávky majú aj tieto príbehy mravoučný charakter, no autor ikonického románu Dracula ich navyše zaplnil množstvom hrôzostrašných situácií a krvilačných bytostí. Nie je v nich teda núdza o roztrieštené lebky, potoky krvi, hnijúce mŕtvoly, či zlovoľných duchov, neľútostných obrov, zákerné obludy i dobrotivých strážnych anjelov. Rozprávková zbierka Súmrak dňa (Under the Sunset) vyšla po prvý raz v roku 1881. Niektoré z poviedok sa už predtým objavili v literárnom časopise pre dospievajúcu mládež The Boy's Own Paper, ale pre knižné vydanie boli čiastočne upravené a zjemnené. Slovenský preklad vychádza z pôvodných verzií, ktoré majú oveľa hororovejší charakter a niektorí viktoriánski literárni kritici ich dokonca označili za nevhodné pre deti. "Necenzurovaný" text, ktorý je doslova prešpikovaný množstvom fantazijných a nonsensových prvkov, nám tak umožňuje vnímať autora najslávnejšieho "upírskeho" románu aj ako spoluzakladateľa žánru fantasy. In them, Howard Phillips Lovecraft, practically unread and unknown during his life, but a source of inspiration after his death thanks to friends and devoted fans, deals with the clash of two worlds – the reality and “beyond”. Beyond the Wall of Sleep is a short story from 1919 based on the innovative (at that time) idea of using psychology for explaining real-life issues. Incidentally, a near namesake song (Behind the Wall of Sleep) appeared on the debut album of Black Sabbath, and it should come as no surprise that it was inspired by this short story. The second story, From Beyond (written in 1920, published in 1934), hovers around the theme of a mad scientist willing to peek beyond reality. It inspired a few films, songs by death-metal bands, and it even features in the PC game, Half-Life. The last story of the trio is The Transition of Juan Romero, from 1919, originally written for a limited circle of friends and published after Lovecraft’s death. The feature “character” is a mysterious evil encountered in an ancient ritual to the Mexican deity, Huitzilopochtli.
