Je pouze otázkou času, kdy mladá zámecká paní v necitelném prostředí najde spřízněnou duši: stane se jí Mellors, jejich svérázný myslivec a muž nejméně o dvě společenské příčky níž. Policejně byl zakázán a ještě v roce 1960 se nakladatelství Penguin Books ocitlo na lavici obžalovaných, když knihu vydalo. V proslulém soudním procesu, v němž na obranu Lawrencova románu vystoupila řada věhlasných spisovatelů a literárních vědců, byl román shledán nevinným a zbaven nařčení z pornografie. Je pravda, že autor líčí erotické scény s velkou otevřeností. Nejsou však samoúčelné. Jde o společenský román o lidských vztazích na přelomu dvou epoch, s důrazem na hluboký a pravdivý erotický vztah mezi mužem a ženou, který má vliv na emancipaci člověka a společnosti.
