Drsňák Hank Chinaski líčí své dospívání v Los Angeles, poznamenané despotickým otcem, šikanou ve škole, bídou za hospodářské krize a narůstajícím pocitem odcizení, jemuž čelil vzdorem, násilím a únikem do světa literatury. Tento nejlepší Bukowského román je vyprávěn s typickým gustem a ironickým humorem, navíc dokonale vykresluje atmosféru doby. V neposlední řadě tím ovšem Bukowski naráží na svůj styl psaní (a ham writer on rye whiskey, tj. "přehánějící neumětel na žitné") - a tuto sebeironii se snaží zachytit nový překlad Boba Hýska. Do širšího povědomí čtenářů se dostal v 60. letech, s nástupem tzv. malých časopisů, které dávaly prostor nezávislé, proti establishmentu zaměřené tvorbě. Svým bohémským životním stylem a nevybíravým politickým slovníkem si vysloužil pozornost agentů FBI a několikrát pobyl ve vězení, především za výtržnictví. Poslední dokončené dílo Charlese Bukowského, vydané krátce po jeho smrti roku 1994, se už svým názvem hlásí k žánru literárního braku. Využívá četné stereotypy šestákových románů a dovádí je ad absurdum. Bukowskému nezáleží na dokonalé konstrukci detektivní zápletky, spíš se vyžívá v barvitých popisech odvrácené tváře Los Angeles.
