Najradšej by sa rozprával o úsudku, filozofii a teoretických veciach z kníh – dobre predsa vieš ako nesmierne miluje racionálnu literatúru osemnásteho storočia. Lenže počas toho abstraktného rozprávania občas znenazdania natrafí na čosi, čo sa mu aj naozaj stalo. No a vtedy – aby som to tak povedal – to všetko zhúžva dokopy. Snaží sa to natlačiť do malého priestoru a potom to jednoducho znie protichodne. Katalog věnovaný Josefu Polákovi - významnému historiku umění, muzejníkovi a organizátorovi kulturního života v předválečném Československu, osobnosti, která výrazným způsobem ovlivnila podobu Židovského muzea v Praze - byl vydán v rámci stejnojmenné výstavy v Galerii Roberta Guttmanna (2. února - 19. března 2006). Josef Polák prosazoval ideály masarykovského Československa ve funkci ředitele státního Východoslovenského musea v Košicích. Zde rozvinul velmi progresivní a úspěšnou činnost v oborech muzejnictví, dějin umění, památkové péče a osvěty. Odborné aktivity soustředil především na výtvarné umění. Ve 30. letech 20. století pracoval rovněž na inventáři uměleckých sbírek některých státních zámků. Po návratu do Prahy byl Polák pro židovský původ ze státní služby vyhozen. V roce 1942 se stal hlavním kurátorem Židovského ústředního musea v Praze. Zde vytvořil koncepci budování sbírek, systém pro třídění, popis a evidenci liturgických předmětů, stanovil pravidla odborné péče. Zapojil se do odbojového hnutí navzdory tomu, že sám byl pro svůj židovský původ bezprostředně ohrožen na životě. V srpnu 1944 byl zatčen gestapem. Jeho stopa se ztrácí v lednu 1945 v Osvětimi.
