Alice Herz-Sommer was born in 1903 in Prague, the Prague of the Hapsburgs and of Franz Kafka, a family friend. Musically very gifted, by her mid-teens Alice was one of the best-known pianists in Prague. But as the Nazis swept across Europe her comfortable, bourgeois world began to crumble around her, as anti-Jewish feeling not only intensified but was legitimised. In 1942, Alice's mother was deported. Desperately unhappy, she resolved to learn Chopin's 24 Etudes - the most technically demanding piano pieces she knew - and the complex but beautiful music saved her sanity. A year later, she, too - together with her husband and their six-year-old son - was deported to a concentration camp. But even in Theresienstadt, music was her salvation and in the course of more than a hundred concerts she gave her fellow-prisoners hope in a world of pain and death. This is her remarkable story, but it is also the story of a mother's struggle to create a happy childhood for her beloved only son in the midst of atrocity and barbarism. eBook: During the Roman Period, the region of the basin of the Výrovka Stream, a left-bank tributary of the Elbe River on the border of the districts of Kolín and Nymburk, contains an extraordinary concentration of funerary sites of particular European importance and which belong to the representative part of the National Museum collection (Dobřichov-Pičhora, Dobřichov-Třebická). The determined settlements thus far are an unexploited source of knowledge about the development of these key regions in Bohemia during the Roman Period. In recent years, the assemblage from the Vrbová Lhota site stands out among the other settlement sites from the 3rd century AD. The collection of the finds is characterised by a large number of metal finds, among which Roman imports stand out: parts of bronze vessels, bells, brooches, fittings and a bronze anthropomorphic statue. Also known from the site are numerous indicators of non-ferrous metalworking activities – these are often interpreted as some of the evidence of the presence of elites, who were suppliers of raw materials (often of Roman origin), but also customers of the finale products. Additional evidence of the presence of local elites is a rich collection of bronze, silver and gold coins dated to the 2nd century up to the second half of the 3rd century AD. The aim of this study is to evaluate an unpublished set of finds along with new ones coming from surface surveys (2020–2021 seasons) and based on the results of the archaeometric study of selected metal finds. With the aid of archaeometry, we attempt to analyse the metallurgical activities at the site and their relationship with other sites in the Central European part of the Barbaricum. Oblast povodí říčky Výrovky, levobřežního přítoku Labe na hranici okresů Kolín a Nymburk v době římské představuje mimořádnou koncentraci evropsky významných funerálních lokalit, které patří k reprezentativní součásti sbírky Národního muzea (Dobřichov-Pičhora, Dobřichov-Třebická). Dosud známé sídlištní lokality představují dosud nevyužitý pramen k poznání vývoje tohoto klíčového regionu ve středních Čechách doby římské. Mezi jinými lokalitami ze 3. století n. l. vyniká poslední roky obohacovaný soubor z lokality Vrbová Lhota. Nálezový soubor se vyznačuje množstvím kovových nálezů, mezi nimiž vynikají římské importy: části bronzových nádob, zvonky, spony, kování a bronzová antropomorfní plastika. Z lokality jsou také známy četné doklady zpracování neželezných kovů – ty jsou často interpretovány jako jeden z dokladů přítomnosti elit, které byly dodavateli surovin (často římského původu), ale také odběrateli finálních výrobků. Dalším dokladem přítomnosti místních elit je bohatá sbírka bronzových, stříbrných a zlatých mincí, datovaná do 2. až 2. poloviny 3. století našeho letopočtu. Cílem této studie je zhodnocení dosud nepublikovaného souboru nálezů získaného povrchovou prospekcí za pomoci detektorů kovu a interpretace metalografických analýz, které na něm byly provedeny. Timothy Ballard jako bývalý agent CIA, který viděl hrůzy a krveprolití války, založil novodobou podzemní dráhu, která zachránila stovky dětí před úplným zotročením, zneužíváním nebo obchodováním v zemích třetího světa. Klíčovým tématem práce je přitom vliv Mnichova na britskou politickou scénu a na následnou britskou politiku vůči Československu ve středoevropském kontextu a také jeho rezonance v jednáních s československými exilovými představiteli. Práce je výsledkem autorova mnohaletého výzkumu zejména v britských archivech, doplněného o materiály z archivů českých, a rovněž reflexe rozsáhlého množství pramenných edic, deníků a memoárové a odborné literatury. eBook: Ancient Egyptian mummies and their funerary equipment are an invaluable source of information not only on the Egyptians’ perception of death, but more importantly on their lives – diseases and traumas they suffered from, activities they carried out, their family relations, and more.The present volume, second in the series of Atlas of Egyptian Mummies in the Czech Collections, is dedicated to mummies and funerary containers of non-adults aged 15 and younger. Two complete mummies, twelve isolated parts from ten individuals, and six funerary containers were introduced in a detailed catalogue, along with their respective provenances, and brief excursions into the health and disease of ancient Egyptian children, and their funerarytreatment.The studied material came from the collections of two divisions of the National Museum in Prague, namely the Náprstek Museum of Asian, African and American Cultures, and the Natural History Museum. The mummies were examined using non-invasive methods, and the results were compared to those published in the past.The containers, two boxes, two hampers, and two jars represent only a small part of typological repertoire of containers used for the deposition of burials of non-adult individuals.While the non-adult mummies and their isolated parts are without provenience, all of the six containers come from modern excavations at well-documented cemeteries at Deir el-Medina and Abusir. Examination by non-invasive methods, especially computed tomography, brought to light several findings including one possible case of traumatic death, and one possible case of rickets.
