Why the Industrial Revolution Happened in Britain - Jeremy Black
Britain’s key importance in world history was a product of its constitution and its empire, but both, in turn, were sustained and supported by Britain’s role in achieving the first Industrial Revolution. In part this was a matter of coal and steam but far more was involved. Alongside the ‘push’ factors of entrepreneurs and resources came the ‘pull’ factors of consumerism, fashion and an ability to purchase goods. There was also the context of parliamentary government, the rule of law, a society open to talent, and no internal tariff boundaries. The combination of these factors produced vital synergies. They also ensure that the history of the Industrial Revolution is the history of a country, a people, and of the factors that made them exceptional.

The Industrial Revolution - Robert C. Allen
The ''Industrial Revolution'' was a pivotal point in British history that occurred between the mid-eighteenth and mid-nineteenth centuries and led to far reaching transformations of society. With the advent of revolutionary manufacturing technology productivity boomed. Machines were used to spin and weave cloth, steam engines were used to provide reliable power, and industry was fed by the construction of the first railways, a great network of arteries feeding the factories. Cities grew as people shifted from agriculture to industry and commerce. Hand in hand with the growth of cities came rising levels of pollution and disease. Many people lost their jobs to the new machinery, whilst working conditions in the factories were grim and pay was low. As the middle classes prospered, social unrest ran through the working classes, and the exploitation of workers led to the growth of trade unions and protest movements. In this Very Short Introduction, Robert C. Allen analyzes the key features of the Industrial Revolution in Britain, and the spread of industrialization to other countries. He considers the factors that combined to enable industrialization at this time, including Britain''s position as a global commercial empire, and discusses the changes in technology and business organization, and their ... Industrial Britain - Hubert J. Pragnell
A fascinating insight into Britain’s industrial past as evidenced by its buildings, richly illustrated with intricate line drawings.Industrial Britain goes far beyond the mills and machine houses of the Industrial Revolution to give an engaging insight into Britain’s industrial heritage. It looks at the power stations and monumental bridges of Britain, including the buildings and engineering projects associated with the distribution of manufactured goods – docks, canals, railways and warehouses. The gasworksTemples of mass productionThe millWarehouse and manufactoryDock and harbour buildingsWater power and water storageWaterways: canals and riversThe railway ageBreweries and oast housesMarkets and exchangesThe twentieth century: industry on greenfield sitesIt’s a story of industrial development, but also a story of its ultimate decline. As manufacturing has been increasingly replaced by services, new uses have been found for at least some of the country’s great industrial buildings. Not least as containers for art and heritage, such as the Bankside Power Station (Tate Modern) and Salts Mill. Other buildings featured are still used as originally intended today, such as Smithfield Market in London and the Shepherd Neame brewery in Faversham.Illustrated throughout with over 200 original line drawings, Industrial Britain is a celebration of industrial architecture and its enduring legacy.

Slavery, Capitalism and the Industrial Revolution - Pat Hudsonová, Maxine Berg
The role of slavery in driving Britain's economic development is often debated, but seldom given a central place. In their remarkable new book, Maxine Berg and Pat Hudson 'follow the money' to document in revealing detail the role of slavery in the making of Britain’s industrial revolution. Slavery was not just a source of wealth for a narrow circle of slave owners who built grand country houses and filled them with luxuries. The forces set in motion by the slave and plantation trades seeped into almost every aspect of the economy and society. In textile mills, iron and copper smelting, steam power, and financial institutions, slavery played a crucial part. Things we might think far removed from the taint of slavery, such as eighteenth-century fashions for indigo-patterned cloth, sweet tea, snuff boxes, mahogany furniture, ceramics and silverware, were intimately connected. Even London’s role as a centre for global finance was partly determined by the slave trade as insurance, financial trading and mortgage markets were developed in the City to promote distant and risky investments in enslaved people. The result is a bold and unflinching account of how Britain became a global superpower, and how the legacy of slavery persists. Acknowledging ... Unknown localization key: "more"

Reflections on the Revolution in France - Edmund Burke
Edmund Burke was the dominant political thinker of the last quarter of the eighteenth century in England. His reputation depends less on his role as a practising politician than on his ability to set contemporary problems within a wider context of political theory. Above all, he commented on change. He tried to teach lessons about how change should be managed, what limits should not be transgressed, and what should be reverently preserved. Burke''s generation was much in need of advice on these matters. The Industrial Revolution, the American Revolution, and catastrophically, the French Revolution presented challenges of terrible proportions. They could promise paradise or threaten anarchy. Burke was acutely aware of how high the stakes were. The Reflections on the Revolution in France was a dire warning of the consequences that would follow the mismanagement of change. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World''s Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Dirty and polluting though it is, this black rock has acted as a midwife to genius. It drove industry, religion, politics, empire and trade. The Most Dangerous Man in Britain? - Tony Benn
TONY BENN: FIREBRAND? NATIONAL TREASURE? A SOCIALIST FOR THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURYThis centenary anthology of Tony Benn’s speeches, writings and interviews is a timely reminder of his political potency and the urgency of his agenda across a wide set of issues: the consequences of empire, the need to embrace industrial change, reform of the state machine and the management of politics.Called the ‘most dangerous man in Britain’ by the Daily Mail, Tony Benn, Labour MP for over fifty years, was the most distinguished socialist politician of his era. Holding several significant cabinet posts in the 1960s and ’70s, he competed for the Labour Party deputy leadership in 1981 and party leadership in 1988. Throughout his career he put forward a series of arguments on constitutional reform, the economy and foreign affairs – popular and influential policy positions which became known as ‘Bennism’ and set the template for the democratic socialism of the 2010s. A charismatic orator, a life-long campaigner for peace, and a charming disruptor of the mainstream consensus, Benn reached national treasure status in his retirement, his firebrand politics too often overlooked. The introduction to this collection, written by his daughter, the writer Melissa Benn, offers a more personal portrait of ... The uniqueness of some British depictions of such well known characters as Orpheus are also explored here. Reconstructions by the author of some sections of figured mosaics based on examples found elsewhere in the empire are included. The author’s recent work on the newly discovered Boxford mosaic, that is the most important mosaic found in Britain for over 50 years, is explored here for the first time.Anthony Beeson is the former archivist of the Association for the Study and Preservation of Roman Mosaics, a member of the board of trustees of the Association for Roman Archaeology and The Roman Baths Foundation, a prolific writer of papers on Roman art and architecture and has lectured on the subject of Roman mosaics.

Crime in the Victorian Black Country - Tracey Blundell
Whilst the Black Country had been the cradle of the industrial revolution, towards the end of nineteenth century, the prosperity of the region was at an end, and crime was on the increase. A mainly working-class population was having laws imposed upon it remotely, influenced by middle class morality and ethics. Crime in the Victorian Black Country looks at the crimes actually being committed in the Black Country towards the end of the nineteenth century. It considers attitudes towards the police in this geologically unique and neglected part of the country and offers possible reasons for it. It relates tales reported in the local press of the time reflecting the attitude of the ruling elite and the sort of behaviour they wanted to impose on the working classes, and the reaction to this. Crime is endlessly fascinating, the late Victorian view of criminals and the causes of crime, fairly well known, this work offers a view of the criminal behaviour of working-class people through an alternative lens.

The area was associated with coal mining and metalworking for centuries, but during the Industrial Revolution it became known for the heavy manufacturing industries concentrated there and the pollution associated with them. The last coal mine closed in 1968 and much of the heavy industry has gone, but the Black Country still has a strong sense of identity today and the way of life in the past can be glimpsed in the Black Country Museum. In this book local historian Anthony Poulton-Smith takes readers on a tour of the Black Country underground, exploring natural and man-made caves, potholes, canal and railway tunnels, mines, hidden routes and cellars with a story to tell, passageways from houses, churches, hotels and pubs, former nuclear bunkers and old air-raid shelters. The stories include the bizarre and sad and this fascinating portrait of the Black Country will interest all those who know the area.

The Black Country is an area immediately to the west of Birmingham heavily associated with the Industrial Revolution. The townships are fiercely partisan and in typical fashion have fought hard for their railway connections. The main presence was provided by the GWR and the LNWR with routes between the major centres. Other minor concerns were represented by local industries. Given the industrial nature of the area, it has been neglected by photographers and over the last fifty years Steve Burdett has uncovered and recorded a system that was decimated in the Beeching Report. As a result, a variety of locations including Stourbridge, Wolverhampton, Walsall and Bescot are included in this photographic tour around the region. In recent years, an enlightened transport policy has seen an improvement in infrastructure and services including the Midland Metro with more to follow. A variety of motive power is to be seen within this fascinating collection.

Colour Revolution
An exploration of the changing status of colour in the Victorian period through painting, sculpture, decorative arts and fashion, published to accompany an exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum.Contrary to the monochrome vision of Queen Victoria’s mourning dresses and the coal-polluted streets of Charles Dickens’ London, Victorian Britain was, in fact, a period of new and vivid colors. The Industrial Revolution had transformed the Victorians’ perception of color and, over the course of the second half of the 19th century, it became the key signifier of modern life. Colour Revolution: Victorian Art, Fashion & Design charts the Victorians’ new attitudes to color through a multi-disciplinary exploration of culture, technology, art and literature. The catalogue explores key ‘chromatic’ moments that inspired Victorian artists and writers to think anew about the materiality of color. Rebelling against the bleakness of the industrial present, these figures learned from the sacred colors of the past, the sumptuous colors of the Middle East and Japan and looked forward towards the decadent colors that defined the end of the century.

Down and Out in Paris and London & The Road to Wigan Pier - George Orwell
George Orwell is a difficult author to summarize. He was a would-be revolutionary who went to Eton, a political writer who abhorred dogma, a socialist who thrived on his image as a loner, and a member of the Imperial Indian Police who chronicled the iniquities of imperialism. Both the books in this volume were published in the 1930s, a \"a low, dishonest decade,\" as his coeval W.H. Auden described it. Orwell's subjects in Down and Out in Paris and London and The Road to Wigan Pier are the political and social upheavals of his time. He focusses on the sense of profound injustice, incipient violence, and malign betrayal that were ubiquitous in Europe in the 1930s. Orwell's honesty, courage, and sense of decency are inextricably bound up with the quasi-colloquial style that imbues his work with its extraordinary power. His descriptions of working in the slums of Paris, living the life of a tramp in England, and digging for coal with miners in the North make for a thoughtful, riveting account of the lives of the working poor and of one man's search for the truth. Our edition includes the following essays: Marrakech; How the Poor Die; Antisemitism in Britain; Notes ... The Condition of the Working Class in England - Friedrich Engels
The Condition of the Working Class in England is the best known work of Engels, and still in many ways the best study of the working class in Victorian England. It was the first book written by Engels during his stay in Manchester from 1842 to 1844. Manchester was then at the very heart of the Industrial Revolution, and Engels compiled his study from his own observations and detailed contemporary reports. The fluency of his writing, the personal nature of his insights, and his talent for mordant satire combine to make this account of the lives of the victims of early industrial change into a classic - a historical study that parallels and complements the fictional works of the time by such writers as Gaskell and Dickens. What Cobbett had done for agricultural poverty in his Rural Rides, Engels did - and more - in this work on the plight of industrial workers in England in the 1840s. This edition includes the prefaces to the English and American editions, and a map of Manchester c.1845.

The Condition of the Working Class in England - Friedrich Engels
Written when Engels was only twenty-four, and inspired in particular by his time living amongst the poor in Manchester, this forceful polemic explores the staggering human cost of the Industrial Revolution in Victorian England. Engels paints an unforgettable picture of daily life in the new industrial towns, and for miners and agricultural workers--depicting overcrowded housing, abject poverty, child labour, sexual exploitation, dirt and drunkenness--in a savage indictment of the greed of the bourgeoisie. His fascinating later preface, written for the first English edition of 1892 and included here, brought the story up to date in the light of forty years'' further refelection. A masterpiece of committed reporting and an impassioned call to arms, this is one of the great pioneering works of social history.

Women of the Durham Coalfield in the 19th Century - Margaret Hedley
The success of the Durham Coalfield and its important role in the Industrial Revolution is attributed to men of influence who owned the land and the pits, and men who worked in the coal-mining industry during the Victorian period. There has been very little written about the importance of the home life that supported the miners - their wives who, through heroic efforts, did their best to provide attractive, healthy, happy home for their husbands, often in appalling social conditions. To provide a welcoming atmosphere at home demanded tremendous resources and commitment from the miners'' wives. Despite their many hardships these women selflessly put everyone in the family before themselves. They operated on less rest, less food at times of necessity and under the huge physical burden of work and the emotional burden of worry concerning the safety of their family. Women of the Durham Coalfield in the 19th Century: Hannah''s Story addresses the lack of information about the role of women in the Durham Coalfield, engagingly explored through one woman''s experience.

Life in the 1950s - Mike Brown
The 1950s began in the shadow of War. In Britain, food was still rationed as the country strove to pay off the huge debts that were the legacy of war. However by the end of the decade, the British had ‘never had it so good’, as prime Minister Harold MacMillan told them. In this book, Mike Brown looks at some of the major aspects of living in Britain at that time of change; how ordinary people lived, worked and played, of the experiences of childhood, and of a new group - teenagers. How did people spend their new-found wealth, what they ate, wore, watched and listened to; the stories and people who made the headlines - Royals, politicians, and stars of music and screen, in an age overshadowed by the Cold War. The book will appeal to those who lived through it, and to those wishing to know more about life for their parents and grand-parents.

A History of the Universe in 100 Stars - Freistetter Florian
From the Big Bang to the Gaia Mission, this is a very personal history of the universe through the author's favourite 100 stars. Astronomer Florian Freistetter has chosen 100 stars that have almost nothing in common. Some are bright and famous, some shine so feebly you need a huge telescope. There are big stars, small stars, nearby stars and faraway stars. Some died a while ago, others have not even yet come into being. Collectively they tell the story of the whole world, according to Freistetter. There is Algol, for example, the Demon Star, whose strange behaviour has long caused people sleepless nights. And Gamma Draconis, from which we know that the earth rotates around its own axis. There is also the star sequence 61 Cygni, which revealed the size of the cosmos to us. Then there are certain stars used by astronomers to search for extra-terrestrial life, to explore interstellar space travel, or to explain why the dinosaurs became extinct. In 100 short, fascinating and entertaining chapters, Freistetter not only reveals the past and future of the cosmos, but also the story of the people who have tried to understand the world in which we live.

This book speaks to and for the millions of black and brown people throughout the United States who were effectively pushed back to the back of the bus in the Trump era by a media that prioritised the concerns and feelings of the white working class and an administration that made white supremacists giddy, and explains why the country s fate in 2020 and beyond is largely in their hands.
