From the opening of the Great Western Railway in 1838 through to the end of steam traction on the Western Region in 1965 the ‘engine shed’ formed an important role in both the infrastructure and operation of the railway. As the Great Western system expanded so did the need for larger locomotive servicing facilities and from the 1870s right through to the 1930s many sheds were rebuilt into larger locomotive depots or in some cases replaced by entirely new structuresNationalisation of the railways in 1948 saw the formation of the ‘British Railways Western Region’. Apart from a few early sub-shed closures the number of Western Region steam depots and sub-sheds remained almost unaltered until the regional boundary changes of 1958.Using black and white and colour images from the Great Western Trust archive at Didcot, the book illustrates Western Region steam depots and ‘sub sheds’ that were in operation in the mid 1950s. With many previously unpublished photographs the book should interest modellers, historians and enthusiasts of the Western Region.Today the unique atmosphere of the steam ‘shed’ can be still be experienced at Didcot, where the original 1932 locomotive shed forms the centrepiece of the Didcot Railway Centre.

The period between the late 1800s and the late 1920s was the heyday of the road steam traction engine. Prior to that, ‘portable’ steam engines were pulled by horses from farm to farm to provide the power unit for belting to machinery for tasks such as the annual threshing. The invention of the self-moving traction engine brought many advances, always staying one jump ahead of amendments to the Locomotive Acts. Fairground operators hauled their huge road train of rides to the next fair; ploughing engines and threshing engines travelled from farm to farm; road hauliers carried huge loads; and steam rollers laid and mended the roads. V roce 2012 byly v Norsku na půdě jednoho domu nalezeny dosud neznámé a nepublikované deníky Václava Polívky, později Vidara Jensena, které si psal v Československu od ledna 1945 do března 1948. Mladík pocházel ze vzdělané rodiny a spolu se svými rodiči žil v domě na Pražském hradě, miloval klasickou hudbu a sám hrál na klavír a violoncello. Zapisovat si začal jako sedmnáctiletý gymnazista a po válce pokračoval už jako student medicíny. Jeho deníky jsou cenné zejména tím, že poskytují bezprostřední a autentické svědectví o důležitých historických událostech a vůbec o společensko-politickém dění dané doby - od posledního roku okupace včetně Pražského povstání přes poválečné období, kdy společnost ještě žila v euforii z osvobození a neviděla blížící se nebezpečí, až ke komunistickému převratu v únoru 1948. Tehdy dvacetiletý Václav Polívka jasně viděl, co se ve státě děje a že vývoj směřuje ke komunistické diktatuře. Na jaře 1948 se mu podařilo uprchnout z Československa a usadit se v Norsku, kde se také oženil se svou láskou, kterou potkal během studentských cest do Dánska v letech 1946 a 1947.

V roce 1966 obeslal autorskou soutěž Československého rozhlasu textem Dialog v předvečer soudu a získal za něj hlavní cenu. Hru nastudoval ještě v témže roce režisér Jiří Roll a premiéra se vysílala na Nový rok 1967.Ale než se rok s rokem sešel, režisér se k textu vrátil a natočil ho znovu, v novém obsazení. Doktora si tentokrát zahrál Karel Höger a jeho žalobce Otakar Brousek starší. Mezi oběma inscenacemi není žádný podstatný rozdíl s výjimkou začátku: druhá inscenace začíná asi minutovou zvukovou kulisou probíhajícího zákroku na operačním sále. Pak už se v obou případech ocitáme na lékařském pokoji, kde se spolu oba muži vedou rozhovor točící se kolem sporného případu transplantace a etiky lékařského povolání.
