Hlavní postavou příběhu je Pierre Anthon, který první školní den dospěje k názoru, že nic nemá smysl, na ničem nezáleží, takže nemá cenu nic dělat. Odejde ze třídy, vyleze na strom a odmítá slézt. Spolužáci se s jeho názory nehodlají smířit. Nejsou si sice úplně jistí, zda nemá náhodou pravdu, protože jsou ale odmalička vedeni k tomu, aby v životě něčeho dosáhli, byli někým, něčím, a snaží se ho ze stromu dostat. Nejprve mu vyhrožují, házejí na něj kameny, vždyť zpochybnil jejich životní vizi, jistotu. Později mu smysl života dokazují tím, že vytvoří jakousi hromadu smyslů. Vrší pod strom své oblíbené věci, mezi něž patří například knihy, adopční listina, křeček, ale postupem času se začnou obviňovat z nedostatečné hodnoty věnovaných předmětů a vyvíjejí na sebe navzájem nátlak k větší a větší oběti. A tak se na hromadě objeví vykopaná rakev s pozůstatky bratra jednoho z hochů, useknutý prst nebo odťatá hlava psa. Situace spěje k velké tragédii. Text Janne Teller je rovněž o osamělosti a odlišnosti. Pierre Anthon žije s rodiči v komuně, která pěstuje biopotraviny a chová zvířata, aby byla potravinově soběstačná, a tím se od ostatních dětí zásadně odlišuje. Sice se separuje sám, dobrovolně a svobodně vyjadřuje svůj názor, ale právě proto, že je jiný, ostatní dráždí a vyvolává v nich agresivní chování a jednání. Nikdo ze spolužáků se Anthona nesnaží pochopit, nikdo nestojí na jeho straně. Jinakost se neodpouští. Dalším závažným tématem je zde způsob ovlivňování a manipulace. V knize jen velmi okrajově vystupují dospělí lidé. Děti si své problémy chtějí řešit samy. Rodiče ztratili svůj vliv a chování jednotlivce už od školních let ovlivňuje zejména komunita vrstevníků, s níž se dotyčný stýká. Internet a média skýtají mnoho návodů, jak manipulovat ostatními a kdo má k takovému chování sklony, většinou dokáže ostatní ovlivnit natolik, že udělají věci, o nichž by za normálních okolností ani neuvažovali.
