WAR IN CONTEXT - Christopher Pike

War has been a constant of human history. From the fortified settlements of the Neolithic to the trenches of the Somme, from the Cold War nuclear standoff to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, organised violence has shaped the destinies of peoples, nations, and empires. Yet despite its persistence, war remains one of the least understood of human activities. Too often it is confused with warfare, reduced to the mechanics of battles and technology, rather than recognised as a political act with profound consequences.  The Making Sense of War trilogy by Christopher K. Pike confronts this gap directly. It offers a sustained, multidisciplinary study of war⠙s causes, conduct, and consequences, drawing on history, politics, strategy, sociology, psychology, and international relations. Across three volumes ⠔ About War, War in Context, and War after Ukraine ⠔ the trilogy provides readers with an accessible yet rigorous framework for understanding why wars begin, how they are fought, and why they so rarely end as their initiators intend. War in Context builds upon this foundation by situating war in the modern world. It explores the role of the state, the anarchic nature of the international system, and the ways in which states justify and manage military force. Case studies range from Britain⠙s post-imperial interventions to America⠙s ⠜war on terror.⠝ Pike scrutinises terrorism, nuclear deterrence, and the impact of emerging technologies such as drones, cyber operations, and artificial intelligence. Balanced and multidisciplinary, the book emphasises that war cannot be understood in isolation: it is embedded in the political, economic, and cultural structures of society.  Some reader⠙s comments:⠜A brilliant, balanced book which explores some very important questions surrounding war and conflict over the span of time.⠝⠜For anyone who is interested in the history of war, the psychology that underpins the human psyche, the long-term effects and the political reaction to war and warfare will enjoy this well written and researched book.⠝⠜It⠙s a bold, intelligent, and deeply timely analysis of why wars happen.⠝

ABOUT WAR - Christopher Pike

About War, the first volume in the trilogy, introduces the central distinction between war and warfare. War is defined as the hostile use of organised violence for political ends; warfare concerns the conduct of that violence through tactics, logistics, and operations. By tracing this distinction through history ⠔ from Clausewitz⠙s trinity to the failures of Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Libya ⠔ Pike shows why fewer than half of wars achieve their original political objectives. He examines civil⠓military relations, the misuse of strategy, and the dilemmas of nuclear deterrence, arguing that victory must be accompanied by peace and justice if it is to be meaningful. Some reader⠙s comments:⠜From an historical and sociological perspective, this book is incredibly interesting, well researched and most importantly, well written.⠝ ⠜What a fascinating and intensively researched book About War is. Wow!⠝⠜A sharp, original study that makes the complexities of war understandable without oversimplifying.⠝

Churchill and the Bomb in War and Cold War - Kevin Ruane

Covering the development of the atomic bomb during the Second World War, the origins and early course of the Cold War, and the advent of the hydrogen bomb in the early 1950s, Churchill and the Bomb explores a still neglected aspect of Winston Churchill s career ⠓ his relationship with and thinking on nuclear weapons. Kevin Ruane shows how Churchill went from regarding the bomb as a weapon of war in the struggle with Nazi Germany to viewing it as a weapon of communist containment (and even punishment) in the early Cold War before, in the 1950s, advocating and arguably pioneering what would become known as ⠜mutually assured destruction⠝ as the key to preventing the Cold War flaring into a calamitous nuclear war. While other studies of Churchill have touched on his evolving views on nuclear weapons, few historians have given this hugely important issue the kind of dedicated and sustained treatment it deserves. In Churchill and the Bomb, however, Kevin Ruane has undertaken extensive primary research in Britain, the United States and Europe, and accessed a wide array of secondary literature, in producing an immensely readable yet detailed, insightful and provocative account of Churchill⠙s nuclear hopes and fears.

Poetic Writing and the Vietnam War in West Germany

In the 1960s and 1970s in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), or West Germany, newspaper readers and television viewers were appalled by terrible images of fires burning half a world away. The Vietnam War was a decisive catalyst for the era?s wider protest movements and gave rise to an ardent anti-war discourse. This discourse privileged writing in many forms. Within it, poetry and poetic writing were key; and because coverage of the conflict in Vietnam often focused on spectacular, destructive conflagrations ignited by hi-tech machines of war, their dominant trope was fire. Hundreds of poems and related writings about Vietnam circulated in the FRG, yet they are almost entirely forgotten today.Poetic Writing and the Vietnam War in West Germany uncovers and explores some of this rich production in order to present a new history of engaged poetic writing in the FRG in the 1960s and 1970s, and to draw out distinctive characteristics of wider protest culture. In doing so, it makes the case for attending to marginal, non-canonical or neglected literary and cultural forms, and for critical thinking about why they might, over time, have been obscured. This book offers, too, a case study for reflection on the representation of war, on ways in which German oppositional culture could imagine its others, and the ways in which other voices could speak to it in turn, and on the relationship of poetry to the historical world.Praise for Poetic Writing and the Vietnam War in West Germany The book?s strength lies in its broad approach that contextualises a historical nexus point and seeks to explain the meaning of ?Vietnam? for (West)Germany by exploring anti-war poetic responses by lesser-known German writers. The War in the West - A New History - James Holland

From the top ten bestselling author of Normandy 44 and Sicily 43The Second World War is the most cataclysmic and violent sequence of events in recent times. But for the past seven decades, our understanding of it has relied upon conventional wisdom, propaganda and an interpretation skewed by the information available. James Holland has spent over twelve years conducting new research, interviewing survivors, visiting battlefields and archives that have never before been so accessible and challenging too-long-held assumptions about the war that shaped our world. In Germany Ascendant, the first part of this ground-breaking new history, James Holland introduces the war, beginning with the lead-up to its outbreak in 1939 and taking us up to mid-1941 as the Nazis prepared to unleash Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of Russia. To tell the real story, he weaves together the experiences of dozens of individuals, from civilians and soldiers, to sailors, pilots, leading military strategists, industrialists and heads of state, and uncovers the strategy, tactics and events that informed not only the military aspects of the war but also the economic, political, and social aspects too.The War in the West is a truly monumental history of the war on land, in the air, and at sea. In it, James Holland has created a captivating and epic narrative which redefines and enhances our understanding of one of the most significant conflicts in history.

Love in War - Michael Farthing

Love in War is a love story of its time. Joanna and Johnnie were born in South London in the shadow of the Great War and were still growing up when the narrative begins in 1936 during Hitlerâ ™s rise in Nazi Germany. It ends ten years later in 1946, when Johnnie is demobilised. Despite the committed intensity of the five-year relationship, they spent only forty-nine days together. Thus, Love in War is more about managing life apart than being together. The story moves between London and Berlin (where Joanna visits in 1938 and her dear schoolfriend, Ursula lives out the war) and the horrific theatres of war in North Africa and Southern Italy, which have disastrous effects on Johnnie and render him almost unrecognisable on his return to England after the war. As the story closes, it is evident that there are no winners, just losers. Perhaps it is love that emerges as the only victor. The future is uncertain for all concerned. They have almost nothing to show for the last five years; just time lost. There remains a rather modest ray of hope â “ as Johnnie says at the end, â ˜but we are alive.â ™

A Scandal in Konigsberg - Christopher Clark

A remarkable micro-history from the author of The Sleepwalkers and Revolutionary SpringNow part of the Russian Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad, the former Prussian and German port of Königsberg has always been a somewhat sleepy place, doomed to be famous for having once been the residence of Immanuel Kant. But in the late 1830s, just for a short while, it became famous for all the wrong reasons. Christopher Clark’s brilliant new book is the result of many years of fascination with this strange case.Sensational accusations were bandied about, implying that beneath the town’s somnolent surface there were dark erotic currents and wrenching betrayals of trust. For the Prussian authorities this was just the sort of moral collapse they feared most. In the aftermath of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, which had unsettled a generation, every lapse could be seen as the harbinger of new storms.A Scandal in Königsberg beautifully brings to life a time and a place that we would now situate in the tranquil ‘Biedermeier’ years between the seismic upheavals of the 1810s and 1840s. But there is a timeless quality to this small vortex of turbulence, in which spiritual hunger, vanity, professional rivalry, sexual incontinence, naivety and sheer human waywardness threatened to tear a city apart.

A Hitch in Time - Christopher Hitchens

Revisiting this selection of diaries and essay-reviews from the London Review of Books is restorative, an extended spa treatment that stretches tired brains and unkinks the usual habitual responses where Hitchens is concerned. James Wolcott in his introduction Christopher Hitchens was a star writer wherever he wrote, and the same was true of the London Review of Books, to which he contributed sixty pieces over two decades. Anthologised here for the first time, this selection of his finest LRB reviews, diaries and essays (along with a smattering of ferocious letters) finds Hitchens at his very best. Familiar bêtes noires - Kennedy, Nixon, Kissinger, Clinton - rub shoulders with lesser-known preoccupations: P.G. Wodehouse, Princess Margaret and, magisterially, Isaiah Berlin. Here is Hitchens on the (first) Gulf War and the Salman Rushdie Acid Test , on being spanked by Mrs Thatcher in the House of Lords and taking his son to the Oscars, on America s homegrown Nazis and Acts of Violence in Grosvenor Square in 1968. Edited by the London Review of Books, with an introduction by James Wolcott, this collection recaptures, ten years after his death, a Hitch in time : barnstorming, cauterising, and ultimately uncontainable.

Brunel in Cornwall - Christopher John

Cornwall marks the extreme south-western extent of Brunelâ ™s kingdom and the county is surprisingly rich in his works. The Royal Albert Bridge, which crosses the River Tamar, connected the broad gauge network with the Cornwall and West Cornwall railways â “ both engineered by Brunel â “ to take the trains coming from Paddington all the way to Penzance via a series of over sixty spectacular timber viaducts. The original viaducts have gone now, either modified or replaced over the years, but in many cases the masonry piers remain like rows of monolithic sentinels. As a result there is much to reward the Brunel hunter, including the branch line to Falmouth and many surviving examples of his railway stations. There are other connections, literally. His Great Eastern steamship was the first vessel to successfully lay a telegraphic cable to connect Europe and the USA â “ a story told at the historic Porthcurno Telegraph Museum near Landâ ™s End. John Christopher, an acknowledged expert on Brunel, takes us on a tour of Cornwall, exploring his works in the county. This is the latest in a series of books which are about rediscovering Brunelâ ™s works in your area.

The War of the Worlds and The War in the Air - Herbert George Wells

With an Introduction and Notes by Dr Andrew Frayn, Lecturer in Twentieth-Century Literature and Culture at Edinburgh Napier University. In these two compelling novels H.G. Wells imagines terrifying futures in which civilisation itself is threatened. The narrator of The War of the Worlds is quick to discover that what appeared to be a falling star was, in fact, a metallic cylinder landing from Mars. Six million people begin to flee London in panic as tentacled invaders emerge and overpower the city. With their heat-ray, killing machines, black gas, and a taste for fresh human blood, is there anything that can be done to stop the Martians? In The War in the Air, naive but resourceful Bert Smallways is thrilled by speed and fascinated by the new flying machines. His curiosity sweeps him away by accident into a German plan to conquer America, beginning with the destruction of New York. The ease of movement in aerial warfare means that nothing and nobody is safe as Total War erupts, civilisation crumbles, and Bert s hopes of getting back to London to marry his love seem impossibly distant.

War in the Smartphone Age - Matthew Ford

An essential guide to understanding war and information on today s data-saturated battlefields--from Ukraine to Gaza and beyond. Thanks to smartphones, war is everywhere, all the time. Anyone can view, analyse and comment on photos, videos or other warzone media. Where did this technology come from? And what does it mean for the future of war? This book explains why you see what you do on your phone, and how these devices shape our knowledge, conduct and representation of war in the 2020s. It shows why smartphones are indispensable in peace and wartime: every device is a potential weapon, lines blur between war and daily life, and conflict becomes a shared digital experience. Social media platforms displace state-controlled narratives, amplifying violence and shaping war s legitimacy. Apps democratise conflict, enabling anyone to identify and attack perceived enemies. As the Ukraine war has shown, this new reality involves complex, unevenly distributed infrastructures, merging civilian communication with military targeting. With war accelerating beyond our comprehension, militaries have raced to benefit from and adapt to the smartphone age. Matthew Ford explores critical questions about today s hyper-connected battlefield.

Otto Dix and the Memorialization of World War I in German Visual Culture, 1914-1936 - Ann Murray

The harsh realities of wartime and Weimar-era Germany called for a new kind of art. Dada, followed by Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity), confronted social and political issues in new and bold ways. This book highlights how Otto Dix (1891â “1969) â “ one of the leading artists connected to these artistic movements â “ employed these new approaches to reveal the injustices of wartime and post-World War I Germany. Having spent 38 months on the frontline, his pictures revealed the brutalities of the conflict and helped establish him as one of Europeâ ™s leading modernists.Offering substantial new research and presenting numerous primary sources to an English readership for the first time, the book examines Dixâ ™s war pictures within the broader visual culture of war in order to assess how they functioned alternatively as cutting-edge modernist art and transgressive war commemoration. Each chapter provides a case study of the first public display of one or more of Dixâ ™s war pictures at key exhibitions and explores how their reception was subjected to changing socio-political and cultural conditions as well as divergent attitudes to the lost war. It pulls together a number of key approaches and texts: contemporary reviews, contemporary cultural productions (such as novels and cartoons), and theoretical and historical approaches from history, memory studies and art history.Bringing a unique perspective and original scholarship to Dixâ ™s war works, this book is essential reading for art historians of World War I and the visual culture of Weimar Germany.

Intelligence In War - John Keegan

From the earliest times, commanders have sought knowledge of the enemy, his strengths and weaknesses, his dispositions and intentions. But how much effect, in the real time of a battle or a campaign, can this knowledge have? In this magisterial new study, the author of A History of Warfare goes to the heart of a series of important conflicts to develop a powerful argument about intelligence in war. Keegan s narrative sweep is enthralling, whether portraying the dilemmas of Nelson seeking Napoleon s fleet, Stonewall Jackson in the American Civil War, Bletchley as it seeks to crack Ultra during the Battle of the Atlantic, the realities of the secret war in the Falklands or the numerous intelligence issues in the contemporary fight against terrorism.

Love and War in the Apennines - Eric Newby

Hailed as Newby s masterpiece , Love and War in the Apennines is the gripping real-life story of Newby s imprisonment and escape from an Italian prison camp during World War II.After the Italian Armistice of 1943, Eric Newby escaped from the prison camp in which he d been held for a year. He evaded the German army by hiding in the caves and forests of Fontanellato, in Italy s Po Valley. Against this picturesque backdrop, he was sheltered for three months by an informal network of Italian peasants, who fed, supported and nursed him, before his eventual recapture.â ˜Love and War in the Apenninesâ ™ is Newby s tribute to the selfless and courageous people who were to be his saviours and companions during this troubled time and of their bleak and unchanging way of life. Of the cast of idiosyncratic characters, most notable was the beautiful local girl on a bike who would teach him the language, and eventually help him escape; two years later they were married and would spend the rest of their lives as co-adventurers. Part travelogue, part escape story and part romance, this is a mesmerising account of wisdom, courage, humour and adventure, and tells the story of the early life of a man who would become one of Britain s best-loved literary adventurers.

83 Days in Mariupol: A War Diary - Don Brown

A young adult graphic novel that captures the complexities of the war in Ukraine, focusing on the siege of Mariupol (Feb ’22 – May ’22) and the brave people who stayed to defend their city against Russian forces as well as the resulting effects on global politics.A city ruined. In once quiet residential streets, two armies battle, driving people into cellars and basements with little food or water. No lights or heat. Dwindling medical supplies. Shells and bullets deliver cruel, random death to the young and old, men, women, and children. This is Mariupol, a Ukrainian city and early target of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Bordering Russian-occupied territory, the coastal city seemed doomed to a defeat that would come within days, if not hours. Could Mariupol, and Ukraine, survive? As Russian rockets threatened the city, Ukrainians resisted, and with a heroic combination of sacrifice and bravery, the besieged city endured . . . for months. But it all came at a steep cost. With compassion and his keen journalist’s eye, Sibert Honor creator Don Brown illuminates the horrors of Mariupol and the depredations of its people not seen in the city since World War II. He also shows that outside of Mariupol, the city’s agonies were mirrored by similar events occurring in towns and cities across Ukraine.83 Days in Mariupol reminds us that the bloody defiance shown at the Alamo, Dunkirk, Leningrad, and Thermopylae isn’t confined to the past but has a violent, modern presence. It is the story of senseless destruction, patriotism, and grit against long odds—a brutal battle whose consequences still reverberate across Ukraine and continue to reshape the global political landscape.Read more books by Don Brown:Run and Hide: How Jewish Youth Escaped the Holocaust In the Shadow of the Fallen Towers: The Seconds, Minutes, Hours, Days, Weeks, Months, and Years after the 9/11 AttacksFever Year: The Killer Flu of 1918The Unwanted: Stories of the Syrian Refugees

The German Way of War in the North Africa Campaign - Jaap Jan Brouwer

Much has been written about the Second World War and certainly about the campaigns in North Africa. While often a historical perspective is chosen, this book chooses a more organisational approach in addition to a historical perspective. The reason for this is that the course and outcome of military actions can only be understood if one has a clear picture of the organisational dimensions of the armies involved. After all, the combinations of the number of men and weapons is vital when considering the way the war will be fought and the outcome of the confrontation. This includes elements such as the organisational structure, the degree of decentralisation, the leadership style, the training level of the troops, team building, the command, control and intelligence structure, etc. When we talk about North Africa, we of course also talk about Rommel, a central figure in the events described. Other names that are for ever connected with North Africa are El Alamein, one of the turning points of the Second World War, and Montgomery, the British general who managed to turn the tide. This book begins with a sketch of the organisational dimensions of the German and British armies, but also looks at the dynamics of the fighting in North Africa and the demands it placed on men, officers, equipment, leadership, training, logistics, planning etc.

Mountain Commandos at War in the Falklands - Rodney Boswell

Sunset, 8 June 1982, East Falkland. Eight specially trained Royal Marines infiltrate Goat Ridge, a long rocky hilltop between Mount Harriet and Two Sisters which are occupied by a battalion of 600 Argentine infantry. The next day, from their hiding place just metres away from the enemy, they note and sketch the Argentine positions, then withdraw as stealthily as they had come. Their daring patrol provides essential intelligence that guided the British assault which overwhelmed the Argentine defences two days later. This was just one example of the missions undertaken by the Royal Marines Mountain and Arctic Warfare Cadre during the Falklands War, all of which are described in graphic detail in Rod Boswellâ ™s eyewitness account. Using his own recollections and those of his comrades, he describes their operations in the Falklands â “ the observation posts set up in the no manâ ™s land between San Carlos and Port Stanley, their role in the raid at Top Malo House, and the reconnaissance patrols they carried out close to the Argentine lines during the conflict. His first-hand account gives a fascinating insight into the operational skills of a small, specially trained unit and shows the important contribution it made to the success of the British advance. It also records the entire experience of the Falklands War from their point of view â “ the long voyage south through the Atlantic, the landings, the advance and the liberation of Stanley.

The Penguin History of Modern Vietnam - Christopher Goscha

WINNER OF THE AMERICAN HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION S JOHN K. FAIRBANK PRIZESHORTLISTED FOR THE CUNDHILL HISTORY PRIZE 2017 This is the finest single-volume history of Vietnam in English. It challenges myths, and raises questions about the socialist republic s political future Guardian Powerful and compelling. Vietnam will be of growing importance in the twenty-first-century world, particularly as China and the US rethink their roles in Asia. Christopher Goscha s book is a brilliant account of that country s history. - Rana Mitter A vigorous, eye-opening account of a country of great importance to the world, past and future - Kirkus ReviewsOver the centuries the Vietnamese have beenboth colonizers themselves and the victims of colonization by others. Their country expanded, shrunk, split and sometimes disappeared, often under circumstances far beyond their control. Despite these often overwhelming pressures, Vietnam has survived as one of Asia s most striking and complex cultures. As more and more visitors come to this extraordinary country, there has been for some years a need for a major history - a book which allows the outsider to understand the many layers left by earlier emperors, rebels, priests and colonizers. Christopher Goscha s new work amply fills this role. Drawing on a lifetime of thinking about Indo-China, he has created a narrative which is consistently seen from inside Vietnam but never loses sight of the connections to the outside . As wave after wave of invaders - whether Chinese, French, Japanese or American - have been ultimately expelled, we see the terrible cost to the Vietnamese themselves. Vietnam s role in one of the Cold War s longest conflicts has meant that its past has been endlessly abused for propaganda purposes and it is perhaps only now that the events which created the modern state can be seen from a truly historical perspective.Christopher Goscha draws on the latest research and discoveries in Vietnamese, French and English. His book is a major achievement, describing both the grand narrative of Vietnam s story but also the byways, curiosities, differences, cultures and peoples that have done so much over the centuries to define the many versions of Vietnam.

Jan Kotěra - Czech Modern Architecture in Context - Helena Čapková, Ladislav Jackson

Jan Kotěra (1871-1923) is considered the most significant architect, designer, pedagogue, organizer and artist of the first half of the 20th century in the Czech Republic. Jan Kotěra s last monograph was published almost a quarter of a century ago, but in the meantime research on his work and legacy has moved on significantly. The new collective book presents Kotěra as an important pedagogue (two chapters focus on his work at the School of Applied Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague). Four chapters focus on various areas of his work: one chapter identifies historicism and romanticism in his conception of modernity, two chapters are devoted to his urbanism. A separate chapter deals with his collaboration with artists using the example of the sculptor Stanislav Sucharda. Five chapters are devoted to the international contexts of Kotěra s work: Great Britain, the Netherlands, the United States, Japan and the so-called Balkan and Adriatic countries. The authors of the chapter belong to the young and middle generation of Czech art historians led by Ladislav Jackson and Helena Čapková. The book is accompanied by author s illustrations by Jan Šrámek, contemporary photographs by Jiří Zikmund and a number of historical images, designs and drawings from leading historical institutions.

U-Boats at War in 100 Objects, 1939-1945 - Gordon Williamson

Gordon Williamson, using a carefully selected range of both wartime images and color images of surviving U-boat memorabilia from private collections, describes one hundred iconic elements of the U-boat service and its campaigns. The array of objects includes important individuals and the major U-boat types, through to the uniforms and insignias the men wore. The weapons, equipment and technology used are explored, as are the conditions in which the U-boat crews served, from cooking facilities and general hygiene down to the crude toilet facilities. Importantly, the enemy that they faced is also covered, examining the ship-borne and airborne anti-submarine weaponry used against the U-boats. The U-boats began the war, though few in number, more than a match for the Allies and created carnage amongst merchant shipping as well as sinking several major warships.

War and Power - Phillips Payson O

Phillips O Brien is one of the keenest observers of modern strategy, and his new book takes a deep historical look at the evolution of warfare and its implications for conflicts like the ongoing one in Ukraine Francis Fukuyama--------------------War and power are two of the most-widely discussed issues in all of human history, and yet they are, time and again, misunderstood often disastrously so.Whilst we might think the outcome of war is determined by so-called Great Powers who dominate their opponents with their impressive size and military prowess, the reality of modern conflict, as renowned strategic historian Professor Phillips Payson O Brien demonstrates, is very different. He urges us instead to look for Full Spectrum Powers .For if we are considering how powerful a nation is and who will win a war, we need to think less about weapons, and more about the economies and societies that produce them; less about individual battles, and more about sustaining campaigns and alliances in which states operate.Using fascinating examples from the late 19th century to the present day, War and Power explains how misunderstanding war and power has led to terrible, even preventable conflicts such as the war in Ukraine and how more accurate analysis can help us consider the potential conflict between the US and China.War and Power provides a bold new way of understanding the dangerous world around us.-------------------- Phillips O Brien is always fantastic. Heterodox. He s pretty scathing, even about Biden administration policy . . . A really interesting book Paul Krugman, Distinguished Professor of Economics As Phillips O Brien points out in this important book, the character of war evolves, but some of the underlying truths, particularly from the second World War, are still very much with us. The Spanish Civil War - Helen Grahamová

This Very Short Introduction offers a powerfully-written explanation of the war s complex origins and course, and explores its impact on a personal and international scale. It also provides an ethical reflection on the war in the context of Europe s tumultuous twentieth century, highlighting why it has inspired some of the greatest writers of our time, and how it continues to resonate today in Britain, continental Europe, and beyond. Throughout the book, the focus is on the war as an arena of social change where ideas about culture were forged or resisted, and in which both Spaniards and non-Spaniards participated alike. These were conflicts that during the Second World War would stretch from Franco s regime, which envisaged itself as part of the Nazi new order, to Europe and beyond. Accordingly, this book examines Spanish participation in European resistance movements during World War II and also the ongoing civil war waged politically, economically, judicially and culturally inside Spain by Francoism after its military victory in 1939. History writing itself became a battleground and the book charts the Franco regime s attempt to appropriate the past. It also indicates its ultimate failure - as evident in new writings on the war and, above all, in the return of Republican memory now occurring in Spain during the opening years of the twenty-first century.
