It has been many decades since the skies over southern Britain were filled with the sound and fury of the Battle of Britain. In that desperate fight, one band who had joined as part-time pilots before the war would play a vital role in eventual victory. Formed in October 1924, the Auxiliary Air Force (AAF) provided fourteen of the sixty-two RAF fighter squadrons involved in the battle. The AAF pilots, alongside those of the RAF Volunteer Reserve who also trained in their spare time, provided some of the highest scoring RAF aces in the fighting in the summer of 1940. These former part-timers helped these squadrons achieve 30 per cent of the enemy â ˜killsâ ™ achieved in the battle. Indeed, the first Spitfire squadron to claim 100 enemy aircraft destroyed was No. 609 (West Riding) Squadron â “ an Auxiliary unit. The book captures the sense of adventure these young weekend flyers showed. This was typified by an early achievement of the Auxiliary squadrons â “ the staging of the first flight over Mount Everest in 1933 by the CO of No. 602 (City of Glasgow) Squadron. One their pilots, Flight Lieutenant Findlay Boy, joined in 1935 while working as a mining engineer and he would go on to score the fastest victory of the battle, downing a Junkers Ju 87 Stuka less than a minute after taking off. Such were their endeavours in the Battle of Britain that the then Air Vice Marshal Keith Park, AOC 11 Group, summed up their vital contribution by stating that, â ˜Without the Auxiliaries we would not have defeated the Luftwaffe in 1940â ™. Likewise, Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding was to say at the height of the battle â ˜Thank God for the RAFVR!â ™ Today, the Royal Auxiliary Air Force is the main reserve component for the regular RAF. It consists of paid volunteers who support RAF operations in the UK and around the world in their spare time. Je tak zřejmé, že je zaměřen na osobu a funkci ,,soudce“, přičemž zde na základě evropské srovnávací studie dochází autoři ke specifikování vhodných kompetencí, které mají být zjišťovány a měřeny v průběhu výběru soudců na první pozici, jejich hodnocení a povyšování, a to jak na vyšší soudy, tak při ustavování do manažerských postů soudů. Ve formě barevné grafické tabulky v druhé části knihy pak autoři přehledně uvádí soubor kompetencí, které se používají v procesu jmenování, hodnocení a povyšování soudců, jakož i kritéria a metody, jak měřit tyto kompetence. Tento model byl konstruován jako flexibilní, přičemž barvy semaforu označují, jaké požadavky, kritéria a metody jsou považovány za ,,dobré mít“ (zelené), až k těm, které, pokud jde o naše odborníky, by součástí postupů výběru, hodnocení a povyšování soudců být neměly (červené). Realizace projektu ,,Portrét soudce“ také v širším kontextu vychází z četných záruk a aspektů nezávislosti soudnictví, zejména ve vztahu k výkonné moci, ale zohledňuje také postupný vliv judikatury na rozhodování soudů členských států Rady Evropy. Nezávislost soudnictví je jednou ze základních evropských hodnot, které vládnou právním státům a jejich ústavním systémům. Proto je tomuto problému věnována neustálá pozornost ve vědecké a pedagogické činnosti vysokých škol a výzkumných ústavů a samozřejmě i špičkových soudních institucí. I z tohoto důvodu je velmi cenná účast zástupců Nejvyššího soudu Litevské republiky, Vrchního soudu v Praze a Nejvyššího soudu Albánie, jakož i zástupců Nejvyšších rad soudnictví Litvy a Albánie. The publication summarizes the most important outputs from an international project organized by the University of Lithuania and implemented within the framework of the ,,Norway Grants” grant, which is simply described as ,,Portrait of a Judge”, but with the subtitle ,,A multidimensional model of competencies to be measured during the process of selection, evaluation and promotion of judges”. It is thus clear that it is focused on the person and function of the ,,judge”, and here, on the basis of a European comparative study, the authors specify appropriate competencies to be identified and measured during the selection, evaluation and promotion of judges in the first position, both to higher courts and when appointing to managerial positions of courts. In the form of a coloured graphical table in the second part of the book, the authors clearly present the set of competences that are used in the process of appointing, evaluating and promoting judges, as well as the criteria and methods for measuring these competences. This model has been designed to be flexible, with traffic light colours indicating which requirements, criteria and methods are considered good to have (green), up to those which, as far as our experts are concerned, should not be part of the process of selecting, evaluating and promoting judges (red). The implementation of the ,,Portrait of a Judge” project also builds on numerous guarantees and aspects of judicial independence, in particular in relation to the executive, in a broader context, but also takes into account the gradual influence of case law on the decision-making of the courts of the member states of the Council of Europe. The independence of the judiciary is one of the fundamental European values that govern the rule of law and their constitutional systems. Therefore, constant attention is paid to this issue in the scientific and pedagogical activities of universities and research institutes and, of course, top judicial institutions. For this reason, the participation of representatives of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Lithuania, the High Court in Prague and the Supreme Court of Albania, as well as representatives of the Supreme Judicial Councils of Lithuania and Albania, is very valuable.

Otázkám spojeným se zahájením českého mincovnictví je věnována pozornost našich i zahraničních badatelů již bezmála 250 let. Hledání počátků ražby domácí mince připomíná detektivní příběh s množstvím indicií, ale jen s nepatrným množstvím přímých důkazů. Základním pramenem poznání nejen počátků českého mincovnictví, ale rovněž ekonomických procesů probíhajících v rámci širšího prostoru raně středověké střední Evropy, zůstávají, při nedostatku písemných pramenů, nálezy mincí. Ty jasně dokládají, že již před zaražením domácí mince byla v obchodním styku v Čechách využívána s rostoucí intenzitou mince cizí. V průběhu 9. století to byly denáry ražené v mincovnách karolínské říše, od počátku 10. století mince z bavorských mincoven. Jsou důkazem, že se Čechy postupně stávaly součástí širšího ekonomického prostoru západní Evropy. Je proto logické, že rostoucí moc přemyslovského státu a jeho politické a kulturní ukotvení vedly v určitém okamžiku vývoje k nutnosti zahájení ražby vlastní mince. Kniha Jiřího Lukase a Jana Videmana přináší nový pohled na užívání a funkci ražené mince v Čechách v průběhu 9. a 10. století a na základě prokazatelných skutečností odpovídá na otázky spojené se zaražením domácí mince. Koriguje rovněž některé obecně přijímané téze a staví před čtenáře nový obraz počátků českého mincovnictví. Její významnou součástí je vedle detailního soupisu a popisu raně středověkých mincovních depotů, ukrytých v průběhu 50.-70. let 10. století v oblastech střední a severní Evropy, rovněž katalog českých denárů tzv. staršího bavorsko-švábského (devítibodového) typu, ražených v Praze v průběhu 70. let 10. století. Minting coins, as a basic means of payment within both domestic and foreign exchange, is understood as one of the basic attributes of a statehood in the period of the Early Middle Ages. It is therefore not surprising that the issues associated with the launch of the Bohemian coinage have been the focus of both our and foreign researchers for almost 250 years. The search for the beginnings of the local coinage reminds a detective story with many clues, but only a small amount of direct evidence. The basic source of knowledge not only of the beginnings of the Bohemian coinage, but also of economic processes taking place within the wider area of early medieval Central Europe, remain, in the absence of written sources, coin finds. These clearly prove that even before the domestic coin was minted, foreign coins had been used in trade in Bohemia with increasing intensity. During the 9th century, these were the deniers from the mints of the Carolingian Empire and from the beginning of the 10th century, coins from the Bavarian mints. They prove that Bohemia gradually became part of the wider economic area of Western Europe. It is therefore logical that the growing power of the Přemyslid state and its political and cultural anchoring led, at a certain point of development, to the need to start minting its own coin. The book by Jiří Lukas and Jan Videman brings a new perspective on the use and function of coins in Bohemia during the 9th and 10th centuries and, based on demonstrable facts, answers questions related to the start of the local coinage. At the same time, it corrects some generally accepted theses and presents the reader a new image of the beginnings of the Bohemian coinage. In addition to a detailed inventory and description of early medieval coin hoards, hidden during the 950s and 970s in the areas of Central and Northern Europe, its important part is also a catalogue of the Bohemian deniers of the so-called older Bavarian-Swabian (nine-point) type, minted in Prague during the 970s.

HOW CAN WE KNOW WE’LL GO TO HEAVEN? A recent poll indicated that for every American who believes he or she is going to hell, there are 120 who believe they’re going to heaven. This optimism stands in stark contrast to Jesus Christ’s words written in the Bible: “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few” (Matthew 7:13–14). The truth is that according to the Bible we don’t automatically go to heaven. In fact, hell―not heaven―is our default destination. Unless our sin problem is solved once and for all, we can’t enter heaven. That’s the bad news. But once that’s straight in our minds we’re ready to hear the good news of Jesus Christ. Jesus took upon himself, on the cross, the hell we deserve so that we could experience for eternity the heaven we don’t deserve! THE ONLY TWO OPTIONS There are two possible destinations when we die: heaven or hell. Can we really know in advance where we’ll go? John, one of the writers of the Bible, said this: “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life” (1 John 5:13). We can know for sure that we’ll go to heaven when we die. Do you? To sin means to fall short of God’s holy standards. Sin is what ended paradise in the Garden of Eden. And all of us, like Adam and Eve, are sinners. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Sin separates us from a relationship with God (Isaiah 59:2) and it deceives us and makes us think that wrong is right and right is wrong (Proverbs 14:12). Sin has terrible consequences, but God has provided a solution: “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). Jesus Christ, the Son of God, loved us so much that he left the riches of heaven to become a man and deliver us from our sin. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). He came to identify with us in our humanity and our weakness, but he did so without being tainted by our sin, self-deception, and moral failings (Hebrews 4:15–16). Jesus died on the cross as the only one worthy to pay the penalty for our sins demanded by the holiness of God: “For our sake he [God] made him [Jesus] to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21). But in victory over death, God raised Jesus from the grave, defeating the consequences of sin (1 Corinthians 15:3–4, 54–57). When Christ died on the cross for us, he said, “It is finished” (John 19:30). In those times “It is finished” was commonly written across certificates of debt when they were canceled. It meant “Paid in full.” Christ died so that the certificate of debt consisting of all our sins could once and for all be marked “Paid in full.” THE CRITICAL DECISION Only when our sins are dealt with in Christ can we enter heaven. We cannot pay our own way. Jesus said, “No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). “There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Because of Jesus Christ’s sacrificial death on the cross on our behalf, God freely offers us forgiveness. To be forgiven, we must recognize and repent of our sins. Forgiveness is not automatic. It’s conditioned upon confession: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). Christ offers to everyone the gifts of forgiveness, salvation, and eternal life. “Let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price” (Revelation 22:17). There’s no righteous deed we can do that will earn us a place in heaven (Titus 3:5). We come to Christ empty-handed. We can take no credit for salvation. “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Ephesians 2:8–9). This gift cannot be worked for, earned, or achieved. It’s dependent solely on Christ’s generous sacrifice on our behalf. Now is the time to make things right with God. Confess your sinfulness and accept the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on your behalf. You are made for a person and a place. Jesus is the person, and heaven is the place. They are a package― they come together. You cannot get heaven without Jesus or Jesus without heaven. “Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near” (Isaiah 55:6). For all eternity you’ll be glad you did.
