Modlitba za Owena Meanyho, sedmá kniha Johna Irvinga, je obecně považována za vrchol autorova díla: nabízí strhující příběh, vypravěčské mistrovství a osobitý humor, nad nímž čtenář jednou vybuchne smíchy, podruhé zatrne úzkostí. Titulní hrdina Owen Meany (o němž v románu vypráví jeho přítel z dětství John Wheelwright a své vzpomínky na něj prokládá aktuálními deníkovými záznamy ze své současnosti) je prazvláštně nadaný chlapec nepřirozeně malého vzrůstu s protivným hlasem, který v mnohém připomíná jiného malého velkého antihrdinu světové literatury, Oskara Matzeratha z Plechového bubínku Güntera Grasse (Irving ostatně tuto inspiraci rád přiznává a Grasse považuje za svého přítele). Na rozdíl od monstrózního Oskara je ovšem Owen Meany postavou až kristovských rozměrů, postavou, jež si nepravděpodobným způsobem vybuduje auru proroka a nakonec se obětuje pro druhé.
