Kriminál vypráví o netradiční životní epizodě autora, který byl nucen strávit více jak rok v rakouském vězení Josefstadt. Důvod k zadržení a zatčení byla více jak 15 let stará přednáška před rakouským obecenstvem, kde se měl historik dopustit popírání holocaustu. Při další možné návštěvě Vídně v roce 2005 (kde měl historik přednášet před studenty) byl Irving zadržen policií a poté umístěn na vazbu. Autor knihy byl posléze odsouzen ke tří letům vězení pro trestný čin popírání holocaustu (zákon z roku 1945, který je schválen za stalinistické éry Rakouska). Skoro sedmdesátiletý Irving se ve vězení potkává s lidmi z různých společenských vrstev. Jak s lidmi z akademického prostředí tak s obyčejnými zlodějíčky, až po závažné zločince. V druhé části knihy začíná zlom Irvingova případu, který se pouští do velkých soudních bitev, které se mu z části podaří vyhrát a tak je v roce 2006 předčasně propuštěn na svobodu. Propuštění má, ale jednu podmínku a to že se historik už nikdy nesmí do Rakouska vrátit. Kniha je i sondou do stavu lidských práv a svobod v moderním Rakousku na začátku 21. století. Je až k neuvěření za jaké maličkosti se člověk může ocitnou za mřížemi. Kriminál je i příběh, který nám ukazuje realný stav svobody slova u našich jižních sousedů.
