Začtěte se s námi do jejich příběhů doplněných stovkami dobových, často dosud nepublikovaných snímků. „Lásku k vlasti dokaž činem“ Dnes je státní hranice pro většinu z nás jen pomyslnou čárou na mapě. Díky Evropské unii již na pomezích mezi jednotlivými členskými státy nezažíváme žádné kontroly a je to tak dobře. V minulosti ale ochrana hranic patřila k důležitým úkolům státní moci. Již ve středověku bylo třeba se nejen bránit před vpádem nepřítele, ale také hájit ekonomické zájmy panovníka. Postupem času se právě druhý zmíněný úkol stále více profesionalizoval a v habsburské monarchii byl výsledkem tohoto vývoje vznik c. k. pohraniční stráže v roce 1830. Jednalo se o první jednotně řízený sbor na ochranu státní a celní hranice. Jeho činnost pak v roce 1843 převzala nově založená c. k. finanční stráž, přičemž jeden z jejích hlavních úkolů spočíval v dozoru nad státní a celní hranicí – zjednodušeně řečeno šlo o boj proti pašerákům a podloudnému obchodu. Finanční stráž představovala v době svého vzniku první stejnokrojem opatřený a ozbrojený sbor, který působil plošně na území celého státu – například dnes mnohem známější četnictvo se začalo rozvíjet až o několik let později. Od prvních dnů existence působili finančníci jak ve službě pomezní, tak i vnitrozemské. Dnes je však vnímáme především jako ochránce státní hranice, což je dáno tím, že v roce 1920 došlo k rozdělení dosud jednotného sboru na vnitrozemskou důchodkovou kontrolu a na hranicích sloužící pohraniční finanční stráž. A právě osudy příslušníků druhé zmíněné části sboru jsou předmětem našeho zájmu. Není žádným tajemstvím, že české země jsou z velké většiny obklopeny horskými masivy. Šumava, Krkonoše, Hrubý Jeseník, Krušné, Jizerské či Orlické hory tvořily přirozenou bariéru mezi naší vlastí a sousedními státy. V dobách první republiky dokonce hranice Československa na východě končila až u podkarpatoruské hory Pop Ivan. Příslušníci finanční stráže tak mnohdy sloužili v drsném a nehostinném prostředí, kde byli často odkázáni jen sami na sebe. I běžná pochůzková činnost byla v těžkém horském terénu velmi vyčerpávající, a to ani nemluvíme o boji s pašeráky, při němž šlo nesčetněkrát o holý život. I přesto všechno ale drtivá většina finančníků na své působení u sboru vzpomínala s láskou.

Autorská dvojice Naxera-Benda na přelomu osmdesátých a devadesátých let vydala v celostátních periodikách několik desítek povídek, především se sci-fi tématikou. Teprve na snímcích sondy Voyager se ukázalo, že Uran je skutečně světle a Neptun močálově zelený. A pak tady jsou známé měsíce Marsu Phobos a Deimos z Gulliverových cest, které byly objeveny dávno po publikaci Swiftova díla. Z těchto nahodilých příkladů vyplývá, že o dávné historii lidstva toho dosud víme málo. Nálezů po celé zemi však přibývá, a tak stále jasněji z hlubin věků vystupuje model dávné, technicky velmi vyspělé civilizace, na jejíž fragmenty stále narážíme.
