Trees in Winter - Richard Shimell

Shortlisted for The Wainwright Prize for Illustrated BooksShortlisted for the Royal Society of Literature s Christopher Bland Prize Honest, evocative, inspiring SARAH WATERS A thing of beauty CLARE BALDING A brilliant storyteller MOLLY LEMON I think many of us overlook the beauty of winter, not least the bare and beautiful framework of a winter tree silhouetted against a bright sky... Welsh printmaker Richard Shimell is known by many for his intricate, beautiful prints of winter trees. In Trees in Winter, his poignant memoir, Richard explores his life, love of nature and his art, sharing the moving, personal journey that led him from being a lost young man in London, to becoming a professional artist as he entered his fifties, and now living back in rural Wales. With reflections on how he connects with nature and finds creative inspiration and spiritual healing in the natural world, Richard s emotional and intimate story gives hope to anyone who has struggled to find their own way and about how much joy can be found in mid-life.*** The clarity of Richard Shimell s words perfectly matches that of his pictures, making this a magnificent book in which to lose yourself, and succumb to the wisdom of the trees MIKE PARKER Emotionally resonant and impactful... Shimell s writing is suffused with a queer sensibility, recognising as it does a world-altering distinction in ways of seeing - between what is and what yet might be IRISH TIMES Trees in Winter by Richard Shimell is a wonderful, beautiful book ANGELA HARDING Richard is a brilliant storyteller, his writing takes you through memories and moments as if you were there with him. This nostalgic and thoughtful read will make you want to grab a sketchbook head out into the countryside. It reminds you how important it is to observe and absorb the wonders of wildlife and rural landscapes, especially those beautiful trees MOLLY LEMON Through the pages of Trees in Winter, Richard shares his prints and takes us on his own personal journey and how his love of walking in wild places and being a part of nature has helped him to deal with life. Richard also explains how these experiences have been instrumental in his becoming the professional printmaker he is today. This book is an absorbing read which spoke to me in many of my own life situations - I thoroughly recommend it! JANE SPINK

Brief Candle in the Dark: My Life in Science - Richard Dawkins

In An Appetite for Wonder Richard Dawkins brought us his engaging memoir of the first 35 years of his life from early childhood in Africa to publication of The Selfish Gene in 1976, when he shot to fame as one of the most exciting new scientists of his generation. In Brief Candle in the Dark he continues his autobiography, following the threads that have run through the second half of his life so far and homing in on the key individuals, institutions and ideas that inspired and motivated him. He paints a vivid picture, coloured with wit, anecdote and digression, of the twenty-five postgraduate years he spent teaching at Oxford. He pays affectionate tribute to past colleagues and students, recalling the idiosyncrasies of an establishment steeped in ancient tradition and arcane ritual while also recording his respect for the profound commitment to learning and discovery that lies at its core. He invites us to share the life of a travelling scientist, from fieldwork on the Panama Canal to conferences of stratospheric eminence in exotic locations in the company of some of the most prominent of the world s scientific luminaries. And he describes his experiences with his many publishers, television producers, interviewers and partners in debate, not least in the heady period when, after publication of The God Delusion in 2006, he is dubbed the world s most outspoken and controversial atheist. Most important of all, for the first time he reviews with fresh and stimulating insights the evolving narrative of his ideas about science over the course of his highly distinguished career as thinker, teacher and writer. In Brief Candle in the Dark we are invited to enter with him a constantly stimulating world of discovery and to meet a fascinating cast of exceptional characters described by the talented pen of one of the most exceptional of them all. Richard Dawkins first catapulted to fame with his iconic work The Selfish Gene (1976) which he followed with a string of prestigious books, the latest of which was Part 1 of his autobiography, An Appetite for Wonder (2013). He is a Fellow of both the Royal Society and the Royal Society of Literature and the recipient of numerous honours and awards. He remains a fellow of New College, Oxford. In 2013, Dawkins was voted the world s top thinker in Prospect magazine s poll of 10,000 readers from over 100 countries.

The Dirtiest Race in History - Richard Moore

A captivating and detailed account ... it reads like a thriller, which is exactly the right tone to adopt by author Richard Moore for a story dripping with skulduggery and intrigue ... compelling The Sunday ExpressThe 1988 Seoul Olympics played host to what has been described by some as the dirtiest race of all time, by others as the greatest. The final of the men s 100 metres at those Olympics is certainly the most infamous in the history of athletics, and more indelibly etched into the consciousness of the sport, the Olympics, and a global audience of millions, than any other athletics event before or since.Ben Johnson s world-record time of 9.79 seconds â “ as thrilling as it was â “ was the beginning rather than the end of the story. Following the race, Johnson tested positive, news that generated as many â “ if not more â “ shockwaves as his fastest ever run. He was stripped of the title, Lewis was awarded the gold medal, Linford Christie the silver and Calvin Smith the bronze.More than two decades on, the story still hadn t ended. In 1999 Lewis was named Sportsman of the Century by the IOC, and Olympian of the Century by Sports Illustrated. Yet his reputation was damaged by revelations that he too used performance-enhancing drugs, and tested positive prior to the Seoul Olympics. Christie also tested positive in Seoul but his explanation, that the banned substance had been in ginseng tea, was accepted. Smith, now a lecturer in English literature at a Florida university, was the only athlete in the top five whose reputation remains unblemished â “ the others all tested positive at some stage in their careers.Containing remarkable new revelations, this book uses witness interviews - with Johnson, Lewis and Smith among others - to reconstruct the build-up to the race, the race itself, and the fallout when news of Johnson s positive test broke and he was forced into hiding. It also examines the rivalry of the two favourites going into it, and puts the race in a historical context, examining its continuing relevance on the sport today, where every new record elicits scepticism.

A History of Magic and Witchcraft in Wales - Richard Suggett

Wales had a rich gallery of magical specialists (prophets, cunning-men, physicians etc), including many who were suspected of harmful witchcraft. Richard Suggett examines all types of magical specialists, including those regarded as beneficial as well as harmful. Popular belief in witchcraft in Wales did not decline with the abolition of the Witchcraft Act in 1736. Indeed belief in witchcraft beliefs became darker in form and was transformed into a novel form of cursing the use of cursing wells, many of which are still in existence in Wales.

Last Days in Old Europe : Trieste ´79, Vienna ´85, Prague ´89 - Richard Bassett

The final decade of the Cold War, through the eyes of a laconic and elegant observer In 1979 Richard Bassett set out on a series of adventures and encounters in central Europe which allowed him to savour the last embers of the cosmopolitan old Hapsburg lands and gave him a ringside seat at the fall of another ancien regime, that of communist rule. From Trieste to Prague and Vienna to Warsaw, fading aristocrats, charming gangsters, fractious diplomats and glamorous informants provided him with an unexpected counterpoint to the austerities of life along the Iron Curtain, first as a professional musician and then as a foreign correspondent. The book shows us familiar events and places from unusual vantage points: dilapidated mansions and boarding-houses, train carriages and cafes, where the game of espionage between east and west is often set. There are unexpected encounters with Shirley Temple, Fitzroy Maclean, Lech Walesa and the last Empress of Austria. Bassett finds himself at the funeral of King Nicola of Montenegro in Cetinje, plays bridge with the last man alive to have been decorated by the Austrian Emperor Franz-Josef and watches the KGB representative in Prague bestowing the last rites on the Soviet empire in Europe. Music and painting, architecture and landscape, food and wine, friendship and history run through the book. The author is lucky, observant and leans romantically towards the values of an older age. He brilliantly conjures the time, the people he meets, and Mitteleuropa in one of the pivotal decades of its history.

Adventures in Animation - Richard E. Williams, Imogen Sutton

Triple-Oscar-winning, world-renowned animator – and author of the seminal book The Animator’s Survival Kit – Richard Williams’ legendary career in the world of animation is brought to the page here for the first time.Written with his wife and collaborator, Imogen Sutton, Adventures in Animation follows the life and career of this pivotal figure in animated features, from the influential moment when, aged five, Williams saw Snow White, right through his career of more than sixty years. Over those decades, Williams created full-length features, short films, title sequences for films and hundreds of commercials – all of which were graced by his characteristically elegant, sinuous lines and magnificent imagination. Williams’ place in animation history is assured: he directed the Academy Award-winning 1971 adaptation of A Christmas Carol and perhaps most famously worked as Director of Animation on Who Framed Roger Rabbit, for which he won two Academy Awards. Serving as the linkman between the original creators of the world of Disney (Snow White, Dumbo, The Jungle Book) and the current generation of digital animators (Toy Story, The Incredibles and Ice Age), it is fair to say that his like will not be seen again.Williams’ first book, The Animator’s Survival Kit, and the masterclasses he ran, saw him pass on his hard-won craft to future generations of animators. In Adventures in Animation, the story of the man behind the images will inspire them all over again, bringing more animators and fans of animation to the life and work of this master of the artform.

Richard III - Matthew Lewis

King Richard III remains one of the most controversial figures in British history. Matthew Lewis⠙s new biography aims to become a definitive account by exploring what is known of his childhood and the impacts it had on his personality and view of the world. He would be cast into insecurity and exile only to become a royal prince before his tenth birthday. As Richard spends his teenage years under the watchful gaze of his older brother, Edward IV, he is eventually placed in the household of their cousin, the Earl of Warwick, remembered as the Kingmaker; but as the relationship between a king and his most influential magnate breaks down, Richard is compelled to make a choice when the House of York fractures. After another period in exile, Richard returns to become the most powerful nobleman in England. The work he involves himself in during the years that follow demonstrates a drive and commitment but also a dangerous naïveté.When crisis hits in 1483, it is to Richard that his older brother turns on his death bed. The events of 1483 remain contentious and hotly debated, but by understanding the Richard who began that year, it will become clearer what drove some of his actions and decisions. Returning to primary sources and considering the evidence available, this new life undoes the myths and presents a real man living in tumultuous times.

Experience the tranquil beauty and stillness of the coldest months of the year through incredible images of every continent. It is referred to as the eve of the birth of Mithra, who symbolised light, goodness and strength on earth. Winter - Val McDermidová

A warm hug of a book... like sitting by a roaring winter fire JACKIE KAYWinter is the time to snuggle indoors without guilt; to curl up on the sofa with a good book or a box set, a hot drink or a wee whisky to hand.Val McDermid has always had a soft spot for winter: the bitter clarity of a crisp cold day, the vivid skies over the Firth of Forth, the crunch of frost on fallen leaves and the chance to be enveloped in big jumpers and thick socks. In Winter, she takes us on an adventure through the season, from the frosty streets of Edinburgh to the windblown Scottish coast, from Bonfire Night and Christmas to Burns Night and Up Helly Aa. She remembers winters from childhood, the thrill of whizzing over a frozen lake on skates, carving a neep (swede) for Halloween and being taken to see her first real Christmas tree in the town square, lights twinkling bravely in the dark Scottish winter night.Above all, she shows us that winter is a time of rest, retreat and creativity, for scribbling in notebooks and settling in beside the fire. This is a charming and cosy celebration of the winter season from one of Scotland best-loved writers.

Winter Journal - Paul Auster

You think it will never happen to you, that it cannot happen to you, that you are the only person world to whom none of these things will ever happen, and then, one by one, they all begin to happen to you, in the same way they happen to everyone else. In Winter Journal, Paul Auster moves through the events of his life in a series of memories grasped from the point of view of his life now: playing baseball as a teenager; participating in the anti-Vietnam demonstrations at Columbia University; seeking out prostitutes in Paris, almost killing his second wife and child in a car accident; falling in and out of live with his first wife; the scalding, epiphanic moment of clarity in 1978 that set him on a new course as a writer.Winter Journal is a poignant memoir of ageing and memory, written with all the characteristic subtlety, imagination and insight that readers of Paul Auster have come to cherish. An examination of the emotions of a man growing old . . . this book has much to recommend it, and Auster is unsparingly honest about himself. Financial Times

Could a Good God Permit So Much Suffering? - Swinburne Richard, James Sterba

Could a Good God Permit So Much Suffering? presents a debate over whether the degree and amount of moral evil that actually exists in our world is logically incompatible with the existence of the all-good, all-powerful God of traditional theism. James Sterba puts the case in favour of this proposition, on the basis that the evils of the world are so horrendous that their occurrence violates principles requiring the prevention of moral evil, conclusively showing the non-existence of an omnipotent and perfectly good God. In reply, Richard Swinburne argues that our major benefactors, parents and the State, have rights to permit us to suffer if doing so is necessary to secure some good for ourselves or others. Therefore, Swinburne claims, as so much greater a benefactor than are parents and the State, it follows that God has a far greater right to allow suffering to a high degree if allowing such suffering is the only logically possible way for God to secure some very great goods for ourselves or others. Further responses from both Sterba and Swinburne continue the debate, ensuring that all lines of argument are thoroughly explored.
