To jsem já, na té fotografii - ten malý kluk vpravo vpředu. Jako čtyřletému se mi podařilo uniknout záhubě v továrně na smrt v době, kdy bylo během holocaustu povražděno přes milion Židů. Byl jsem jedním z nejmladších vězňů, kteří se dostali z osvětimského koncentračního tábora živí. Ta fotografie je převzatá z filmů, které natočili sovětští vojáci poté, co 27. ledna 1945 Osvětim osvobodili. Na té fotografii jsem ve skupince dětí, ukazujeme kameramanovi čísla, která nám vytetovali na ruce po příjezdu do tábora. Z dvou tisíc osmi set devatenácti vězňů osvobozených Rusy bylo jen padesát dva ve věku do osmi let. Většinu svého života jsem nedokázal odpovědět ani na tu nejzákladnější otázku: Jak jsem mohl přežít v táboře, kde děti zabíjeli hned po příjezdu? Jak jsem se vyhnul pochodu smrti, který vyčistil tábor, kde bylo šedesát tisíc vězňů, jen pár dní předtím, než se k němu dostala sovětská armáda? Teď už všechno vím.
