E. T. A. Hoffmann totiž předběhl svou dobu a stvořil dílo, které je svou formou a důmyslnou kompozicí vskutku ojedinělé: sám Hoffmann v něm vystupuje jako vydavatel, jenž vyhověl přání svého přítele a rozhodl se knižně vydat memoáry jistého „mladého autora skvělého nadání“, jímž je ve skutečnosti kocour, který si říká Mour. Záhy se ovšem ukáže, že učený kocour do svého rukopisu omylem zamíchal stránky z jiného textu, který objevil u svého pána, a sice z knihy pojednávající o životě geniálního skladatele a kapelníka Johanna Kreislera. Právě prolínání obou příběhů činí z četby tohoto „dvojrománu“ nevšední čtenářský požitek.
