E. T. A. Hoffmann totiž předběhl svou dobu a stvořil dílo, které je svou formou a důmyslnou kompozicí vskutku ojedinělé: sám Hoffmann v něm vystupuje jako vydavatel, jenž vyhověl přání svého přítele a rozhodl se knižně vydat memoáry jistého „mladého autora skvělého nadání“, jímž je ve skutečnosti kocour, který si říká Mour. Právě prolínání obou příběhů činí z četby tohoto „dvojrománu“ nevšední čtenářský požitek.
