The Possessed - Fyodor Dostoevsky - e-kniha
eBook: 'The Possessed' is considered to be one of the four masterpieces written by Dostoevsky after he returned from his Siberian exile. The story takes place in a small Russian town that is thrown into chaos by the arrival of a mystery man, Pyotr Stepanovich. Paranoia grips the town as family and friends betray one another while Pyotr plans a violent political uprising. The novel builds to a brutal and bloody climax, as the town is engulfed by flames and the death toll rises. 'The Possessed' displays Dostoevsky's mastery of tragedy and social satire as the established political and familial norms of the town are uprooted and destroyed by the young revolutionaries. Dostoevsky explores the loss of morality in 19th Century Russia, as a society without a moral grounding tragically turns to nihilism and violence, but its ideas are just as resonant in today's secular world. Celebrated author Joyce Carol Oates described 'The Possessed' as a work of 'unparalleled genius' and its epic scope and blend of political intrigue and familial tragedy make it the perfect read for fans of classic Russian or Greek literature.

The Double - Fyodor Dostoevsky - e-kniha
eBook: What really happens when you meet your doppelganger? Well, if you are "dangerously antisocial" and your double is charming, well-liked and has the social skills that you lack, then they take over your life by pretending to be you! Dostoevsky’s novella 'The Double' follows the life of Golyadkin, a low-level official who is a dangerous sociopath. After a misadventure at a birthday party, Golyadkin has a chance meeting with Golyadkin Junior – his double who looks just like him. The theme of the doppelgänger runs potent in the story, together with universal ones like depression, sorrow, alienation, and social injustice. The only solution for the protagonist is the asylum, where his mind can finally be at piece. A sardonic, Gogolian tale of absurdity and social criticism that is proven to be a great read. Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821-1881) was a famous Russian writer of novels, short stories, and essays. A connoisseur of the troubled human psyche and the relationships between the individuals, Dostoevsky’s oeuvre covers a large area of subjects: politics, religion, social issues, philosophy, and the uncharted realms of the psychological. There have been at least 30 film and TV adaptations of Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s 1866 novel “Crime and Punishment” with probably the most popular being the British BBC TV series starring John Simm as Raskolnikov and Ian McDiarmid as Porfiry Petrovich. “The Idiot” has also been adapted for films and TV, as has “Demons” and “The Brothers Karamazov".

The Gambler - Fyodor Dostoevsky - e-kniha
eBook: One of Dostoevsky\'s shorter novels, \"The Gambler\" reflects the author\'s own difficult and prolonged battles with gambling as one of his major addictions. It is the story of a young man with aspirations to see and go beyond the established order, but in reality only gets stuck deeper and deeper into addiction and degradation. eBook: Is it okay to judge another? Should we really forgive another's sins? Should criminals be punished or rehabilitated? Philosophical and humane, the novel delves deeply into discussions about God, free will, and the repercussions from one's actions. It is the story of the murder of Fyodor Pavlovich and how the way he has treated the children throughout their lives now decides the fate of how their lives unfold. A compelling and haunting novel about the dysfunctionality of a Russian family, where everyone struggles in their own way – often in the darkest corners of their consciousness. Notes from the Underground - Fyodor Dostoevsky - e-kniha
eBook: Dostoevsky’s most revolutionary novel, Notes from Underground marks the dividing line between nineteenth- and twentieth-century fiction, and between the visions of self each century embodied. One of the most remarkable characters in literature, the unnamed narrator is a former official who has defiantly withdrawn into an underground existence. In full retreat from society, he scrawls a passionate, obsessive, self-contradictory narrative that serves as a devastating attack on social utopianism and an assertion of man’s essentially irrational nature.Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, whose Dostoevsky translations have become the standard, give us a brilliantly faithful edition of this classic novel, conveying all the tragedy and tormented comedy of the original.

eBook: Love, hate, deceit and greed. Throw in a sprinkling of comedy and you have the recipe for an entertaining and humorous novella."Uncle's Dream" is a story by Fyodor Dostoevsky that follows the return of a Russian prince and an old aristocratic woman who wants him to marry her 23-year-old daughter. Her cunning plan, however, does not go as smoothly as expected and the Prince's life and his surroundings turn into a comedy.Psychological and deeply philosophical, "Uncle's Dream" is a provincial tale of complicated social issues, humorous escapades, and satirical situations. Even though Dostoevsky is not known for his comedies, his ironic stance is obvious in this novel, creating a lighthearted story of memorable characters and funny twists. Devils - Fyodor Dostoevsky
Translated by Constance Garnett with an Introduction by A.D.P. Briggs. In 1869 a young Russian was strangled, shot through the head and thrown into a pond. His crime? A wish to leave a small group of violent revolutionaries, from which he had become alienated. Dostoevsky takes this real-life catastrophe as the subject and culmination of Devils, a title that refers the young radicals themselves and also to the materialistic ideas that possessed the minds of many thinking people Russian society at the time. The satirical portraits of the revolutionaries, with their naivety, ludicrous single-mindedness and readiness for murder and destruction, might seem exaggerated - until we consider their all-too-recognisable descendants in the real world ever since. The key figure in the novel, however, is beyond politics. Nikolay Stavrogin, another product of rationalism run wild, exercises his charisma with ruthless authority and total amorality. His unhappiness is accounted for when he confesses to a ghastly sexual crime - in a chapter long suppressed by the censor. This prophetic account of modern morals and politics, with its fifty-odd characters, amazing events and challenging ideas, is seen by some critics as Dostoevsky''s masterpiece.

Na příkladu modelové rodiny, jejíž zajímavý a ryze současný příběh se vine celou knihou, se dozvíte, jak se ve své vlastní osamělosti zorientovat a překonat ji. eBook: ‘The Castaways of the Flag’ is the sequel to ‘Their Island Home’ and the 47th book of the ‘Extraordinary Voyages’ series. A fitting finale to Wyss’ original tale, this book is for lovers of Verne and Wyss, alike. The Fat and the Thin - Émile Zola - e-kniha
eBook: "Respectable people...What bastards!"Rake-thin and exhausted prisoner Florent, wrongly convicted during the 1848 Revolution, escapes and seeks refuge with his half-brother in Paris. Florent finds a job at the local central market Les Halles. Initially he is met with a baffled but friendly warmth. But this warmth soon erodes into a poisonous animosity in an atmosphere shot with insidious political intrigue, petty rivalries and perfidious gossip from the "respectable people", that impinge upon the Florent's safety and wellbeing. 'The Fat and the Thin' is the third installment of the 'Les Rougon-Macquart' series packed with powerful social commentary comparing those in power (the fat) to those in the lower classes (the thin). The allegories of the burgeoning Parisian market stalls are so poignant that the reader would be forgiven for thinking this is a story of anthropomorphism, where the characters have turned into the food they buy and sell. Yet, simultaneously rebuffed with depictions of abject poverty, this is an unforgettable novel reminiscent of 'The Ladies' Paradise' and 'Nana'. It comes as little surprise that literary icons Charles Dickens and Anthony Bourdain cited Zola among their favourite authors.

The Fortune of the Rougons - Émile Zola - e-kniha
eBook: La Fortune des Rougon (The Fortune of the Rougons), originally published in 1871, is the first novel in Émile Zola's monumental twenty-volume series Les Rougon-Macquart. The novel is partly an origin story, with a large cast of characters - many of whom become the central figures of later novels in the series - and partly an account of the December 1851 coup d´etat that created the French Second Empire under Napoleon III. The events are experienced through the eyes of a large provincial town in southern France. The title refers not only to the "fortune" chased by protagonists Pierre and Felicité Rougon, but also to the fortunes of the various disparate family members Zola introduces, whose lives are of central importance to later books in the series.

The Fruit of the Tree - Edith Whartonová - e-kniha
eBook: Considered wildly controversial at the time of its release, \'The Fruit of the Tree\' is a departure from the norm for Edith Wharton. While her trademark eye for social detail and psychological insights are present and correct, this novel deals with more melancholic themes, such as divorce, addiction, euthanasia, poor working conditions, and extravagance. It follows the story of George Amhurst, the assistant manager of a textile mill in New England. While his heart might be in the right place, when he marries the widow of a mill owner, he might be forced to compromise in his ideals. A striking book from the pen that wrote \'The Age of Innocence,\' which became a film, starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Daniel Day-Lewis.

The Riddle of the Sands - Childers Erskine - e-kniha
eBook: Do you like Stieg Larsson\'s \'Millennium\', James Bond and dystopian dramas like \'The Man in the High Castle\'? The 1903 spy thriller \'The Riddle of the Sands\' has elements of all three - and then some. Ken Follett, author of \'The Pillars of the Earth\', called \'The Riddle of the Sands\' the \"first modern thriller\". It centres on a suspected plot by the German Empire to invade Britain. The plot proved to be almost prophetic, bearing in mind what was to follow in the First World War and the Second World War in the coming decades. Minor civil servant Carruthers and his friend, Davies are the men investigating the plot while on a yachting holiday in the Baltic Sea. They are drawn into an intricate story that includes secret treasure, a British traitor and a race against time to save Britain from the grip of the Kaiser. In 1979 \'The Riddle of the Sands\' was made into a spy thriller movie, starring Michael York, Jenny Agutter and Simon MacCorkindale. Childers\' technique of including a great deal of detail that could be verified was later used by authors including: John Buchan, who wrote \'The Thirty-Nine Steps\'; \'James Bond\' author Ian Fleming and John Le Carré. Erskine Childers (1870-1922) was an Anglo-Irish writer whose only true literary success came with \'The Riddle of the Sands\'. Instead, he found infamy through his political activism. Having been a prospective Liberal parliamentary candidate, he left the party and took up the cause of Irish Republicanism. He smuggled guns into Ireland on his yacht, but was executed during the Irish Civil War. His son, Erskine Hamilton Childers, became the 4th president of Ireland.
