A přesto je holocaust, ačkoli jej přímo nezažily, od dětství proná¬sleduje jako svého druhu prokletí, jako přízrak, kterému nerozumí a který nedokážou pojmenovat, a tíží je jako přetěžké břemeno - břemeno o to tíživější, že mnozí rodiče o prožitých útrapách se svými dětmi nechtějí mluvit, ať už proto, že toho nejsou schopni, nebo své potomky chtějí vzpomínek na nevýslovnou bolest ušetřit, čímž ovšem jejich trauma nevědomky ještě prohlubují… Trauma se pak v životě potomků těch, kteří přežili šoa, projevuje různým způsobem: Někteří žijí tak, jako by byli sami obětí perzekucí, jiní mají pocit, že nežijí ani tak pro sebe jako pro své rodiče a že skrze ně žijí stovky lidí, jejichž životy zmařila válka. Další jsou posedlí představou, že si "musí své odtrpět", aby se rodičům vyrovnali, a záměrně se vystavují nebezpečným situacím. A jsou i tací, kteří se pokouše¬jí od tíživé minulosti odstřihnout, vzepřít se a po¬přít v sobě židovství. Ať tak či onak "normálně" žít se jim nedaří, dobře vnímají, že jsou odlišní a tato odlišnost jim mnohdy brání, aby se sžili se svým prostředím. Helena Epsteinová, americká spisovatelka a novinářka židovského původu narozená v Praze, procestovala svět, aby se osobně setkala s lidmi, s nimiž sdílí stejný úděl, a na základě vlastních zkušeností, ale i osobních příběhů a svědectví svých vrstevníků, jakož i systematického historického a psychologického bádání, zmapovala, jaké stopy zanechala otřesná životní zkušenost rodičů - lidí, kteří prošli peklem holocaustu - na jejich dětech narozených po válce. Její Děti holocaustu, které vyšly poprvé v roce 1979, jsou vůbec první knihou, která se transgeneračním přenosem traumatu z genocidy zabývá.
