Dej se odehrává v letech 1849-1850 na americko-mexickém pomezí, kde Glantonova tlupa nájemných zabijáku loví pro mexickou vládu indiánské skalpy. V tlupě se objevuje mnoho historicky doložených postav, ale též smyšlený a bezejmenný šestnáctiletý kluk, protagonista celého příběhu. Nade všemi se však tyčí tajuplný soudce Holden, jenž právem aspiruje na nejzlověstnější postavu americké literatury vůbec.
