The Crusades - World History - e-kniha
eBook: The struggle for the Holy Land The timing was perfect. When the first Crusaders, with the Pope’s blessing, set out for the Holy Land in 1096, the Muslim world was riven by internal strife and the European knights could march east unhindered. Victory followed victory, and in 1099 the Christians took Jerusalem. In a bloodlust, they went house to house, slaughtering Muslim men, women and children. The Muslim world was stunned, and the caliphs nurtured a smouldering desire for revenge. But the Crusaders took a firm grip on power in the Holy Land, fortifying it with a network of impregnable fortresses. Only 100 years later were the caliphs united under a single, strong commander. Saladin demonstrated superiority in desert warfare at the Battle of the Horns of Hattin and captured Jerusalem in 1187. For the next 100 years, the fighting ebbed and flowed, but when Ottoman forces captured Constantinople in 1453, the Byzantine Empire and Christian ascendancy in the east were over. World History invites you on a fascinating journey to bygone eras, allowing you to explore the greatest events in history. Take a trip back in time - to the frontlines of World War 2, to the Viking raids, and to the religious rituals of ancient Egypt. World History is for everyone who would like to know more about the exciting and dramatic events of the past.

The World: A Family History - Simon Sebag Montefiore
From the master storyteller and internationally bestselling author - the story of humanity from prehistory to the present day, told through the one thing all humans have in common: family. We begin with the footsteps of a family walking along a beach 950,000 years ago. From here, Montefiore takes us on an exhilarating epic journey through the families that have shaped our world: the Caesars, Medicis and Incas, Ottomans and Mughals, Bonapartes, Habsburgs and Zulus, Rothschilds, Rockefellers and Krupps, Churchills, Kennedys, Castros, Nehrus, Pahlavis and Kenyattas, Saudis, Kims and Assads.A rich cast of complex characters form the beating heart of the story. Some are well-known leaders, from Alexander the Great, Attila, Ivan the Terrible and Genghis Khan to Hitler, Thatcher, Obama, Putin and Zelensky. Some are creative, from Socrates, Michelangelo and Shakespeare to Newton, Mozart, Balzac, Freud, Bowie and Tim Berners-Lee.Others are lesser-known: Hongwu, who began life as a beggar and founded the Ming dynasty; Kamehameha, conqueror of Hawaii; Zenobia, Arab empress who defied Rome; King Henry of Haiti; Lady Murasaki, first female novelist; Sayyida al-Hurra, Moroccan pirate-queen. Here are not just conquerors and queens but prophets, charlatans, actors, gangsters, artists, scientists, doctors, tycoons, lovers, wives, husbands and children. This is world history on the most grand and intimate scale - spanning centuries, continents and cultures, and linking grand themes of war, migration, plague, religion, medicine and technology to the people at the centre of the human drama. As spellbinding as fiction, The World captures the story of humankind in all its joy, sorrow, romance, ingenuity and cruelty in a ground-breaking, single narrative that will forever shift the boundaries of what history can achieve.

How the World Thinks: A Global History of Philosophy (1783782307)
Kniha - autor Julian Baggini, 432 stran, anglicky, brožovaná bez přebalu matná In this groundbreaking global overview of philosophy, Julian Baggini travels the world to provide a wide-ranging map of human thought. One of the great unexplained wonders of human history is that written philosophy flowered entirely separately in China, India and Ancient Greece at more or less the same time. These early philosophies have had a profound impact on the development of distinctive cultures in different parts of the world. What we call 'philosophy' in the West is not even half the story. Julian Baggini sets out to expand our horizons in How the World Thinks, exploring the philosophies of Japan, India, China and the Muslim world, as well as the lesser-known oral traditions of Africa and Australia's first peoples. Interviewing thinkers from around the globe, Baggini asks questions such as: why is the West is more individualistic than the East? What makes secularism a less...

A Short History of the World in 50 Lies - Natasha Tidd
Taking readers on a global journey through human history, Natasha Tidd examines how lies can change the world around us, from Julius Caesar’s deceptive PR machine to the cover-ups that caused Chernobyl. From forgeries that created centuries worth of conflict and domination, such as The Donation of Constantine, the Protocols of Zion and the mysterious Testament of Peter the Great, to mass political and press cover-ups including Britain’s Boer War concentration camps, a Pulitzer Prize-winning whitewash of the Ukraine Famine and the infamous Dreyfus Affair in France.Alongside these are examinations of how our retellings of history can turn fiction into fact, including The Spanish Inquisition’s deceitful legacy. Plus, there is an in-depth look at how historic lies can still impact our lives today, such as the deadly legacy of America’s Tuskegee Experiment.Meet incredible people, including Jeanne de Clisson who became the fourteenth century's most feared pirate – all because of a lie.A Short History of the World in 50 Lies details the profound impact of this secretive side of history and shows that the truth really is stranger – and far more dangerous – than any fiction.

Mandala and History - Luboš Bělka - e-kniha
eBook: Kniha přináší originální zpracování unikátního materiálu, který vznikl v polovině sedmdesátých let 20. století a v angličtině nebyl dosud monograficky publikován.

Basic Income in the World - Marek Hrubec, Martin Brabec, Markéta Minářová - e-kniha
eBook: This book offers an introduction to the important idea and practice of unconditional basic income, which is becoming a topic increasingly discussed not only among researchers but also among citizens and the politicians who represent them. The topic is also increasingly making its way into the mass media. Unconditional basic income is a financial sum that is provided to all citizens (or otherwise legally defined residents) by the state (or a city, a county etc.) at regular intervals (usually monthly) without any conditions being attached, i.e. regardless of whether the citizen has other income from wages or other sources, regardless of age, sex and gender, marital status or other characteristics. The provision of a basic income enables citizens' basic needs to be met and their creative potential to be unlocked for their other activities which could then significantly raise their standard of living. This book discusses basic income by presenting the main arguments and experiments with basic income in Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia. Basic income offers the possibility of a major social and civilizational change for all.

Cur homo? A history of the thesis concerning man as a replacement for fallen angels - Vojtěch Novotný - e-kniha
eBook: This monograph has set itself the goal to examine, outline, elucidate, and supplement the existing body of knowledge concerning a theme from patristic and medieval theology recalled in 1953 by Marie-Dominique Chenu, and that is the assertion that man was created as a replacement for fallen angels (Yves Congar: créature de remplacement; Louis Bouyer: ange de remplacement). The study first shows that the idea of man having being created to take the place of fallen angels was introduced by St. Augustine and developed by other church fathers. It then identifies the typical contexts in which the subject was raised by authors of the early Middle Ages, but goes on to focus on the discussion that developed during the twelfth century (Anselm of Canterbury, the school of Laon, Rupert of Deutz, Honorius of Autun), which represents the high point of the theme under investigation, culminating in the assertion that man is an "original" being, created for its own sake, for whom God created the world – a world which together with, and through, man is destined for the heavenly Jerusalem. The question as to whether man would have been created if the angels had not sinned (cur homo) bears a clear similarity to a further controversy, the origins of which also go back to the twelfth century, and that is whether the Son of God would have become incarnate if man had not sinned (cur Deus homo). Next, the book sheds light on how the subject begins to gradually fade away through the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, both within monastic tradition, which nonetheless held onto Augustine's motif, and within scholastic theology, which asserted that man was created for his own sake. The conclusion summarizes the findings and points to the surprisingly contemporary relevance of the foregoing reflections, particularly in relation to the critique that the Swiss philosopher and theologian Romano Amerio († 1997) offers concerning a statement in the pastoral constitution of the Second Vatican Council (Gaudium et spes 24), according to which man is "the only creature on earth that God willed for itself".

The Arctic Convoys - World History - e-kniha
eBook: As World War II raged across the Russian steppes, in Africa and especially in the skies over Europe, elite German and Soviet forces fought a bitter battle in an isolated northern corner of Europe. Here, the battle was for control of the ice-free port of Murmansk, where the Soviet Union received convoy after convoy loaded with British and American tanks, guns, fuel, small arms, food and aircraft. Supplies from the Allied convoys kept the Soviet Union alive at a critical time during the early stages of the war, and Hitler therefore tried every means to stop the convoys. At the beginning of the campaign against the Soviet Union, he hoped to capture Murmansk and thus weaken his archenemy. Later, when he realised that fighting in the barren, mountainous terrain of the north was unwinnable, he set his sights on destroying the convoys. The Luftwaffe and U-boats attacked the Allied sailors throughout the perpetual daylight of polar summer while crushing ice and raging storms threatened during the dark winter months. The men aboard the Arctic convoys dreaded the voyages, and it was with good reason that the crews dubbed them “suicide convoys”. If they fell overboard in a storm, a quick death awaited them in the icy sea, and if the ships’ holds, filled with fuel and ammunition, were hit by a torpedo or a bomb, everything exploded in a sea of flames. The Arctic convoy trips and the fighting on the Northern Front challenged some of the war’s toughest men. Read their stories here. World History invites you on a fascinating journey to bygone eras, allowing you to explore the greatest events in history. Take a trip back in time - to the frontlines of World War 2, to the Viking raids, and to the religious rituals of ancient Egypt. A Horror and a Beauty: The World of Peter Ackroyd's London Novels - Petr Chalupský - e-kniha

eBook: Dialog Karla Hvížďaly, novináře-zvědavce z Prahy, s Jiřím Přibáněm, právním filosofem z britského Cardiffu, nad uzlovými body naší historie, ku příležitosti 100. výročí republiky, v širokém teritoriálním i časovém kontextu od 9. do 21. století. Zkoumají naši minulost, a to úplně celou! Skeptičtější novinář znepokojuje sociologizujícího filosofa práva, ale ten se nedá: Dorůstá nám do zodpovědného klasika. Inspirující dialog!“ Petr Pithart „Přemítání dvou českých intelektuálů o českých dějinách, ‚národním příběhu‘, kolektivní paměti a současné politice je povinné čtení pro chápání hlubších souvislostí ‚naší nynější krize‘.“ Jacques Rupnik „Je to zajímavá kniha, protože právě tím, že člověk myslí, což autoři Hledání dějin předvádějí, ztratí jistotu pravdy a jednomyslný souhlas jiných, a tím se stane individuem.“ Milan Kundera

U-Boat Hunters in the Atlantic - World History - e-kniha
eBook: For six years, Britain and Nazi Germany fought a bitter battle for control of the Atlantic. Allied offensives against Hitler's armies on the continent were conditioned by their bases on the British Isles, which made air strikes and landings possible. But during 1939, the Germans began to ‘starve’ the British into surrender by cutting off vital supplies of food and equipment from the Allies. This was done with the help of U-boats that tried to sink more cargo ships than the shipyards could produce - even when these actions were suicidal. Over 100,000 soldiers and sailors lost their lives in these battles. In this book, we meet the soldiers at the front and hear civilians talk about everyday life in a world where even the most seaworthy ship can suddenly be hit by a German torpedo. eBook: Six attempts were made by German officers to kill Hitler in autumn 1943 and summer 1944. Explosives in personal gifts, assassins armed with hand grenades and pistols, and even suicide bombers with pockets full of explosives hunted the Führer, who undoubtedly recognised the danger. The security arrangements around the leader of the Nazi regime were therefore enormous when, in July 1944, Officer Claus von Stauffenberg travelled to Hitler's Führerbunker in East Prussia to kill first Adolf Hitler and then the entire Third Reich. Claus von Stauffenberg was not alone. He was just a pawn in a group of noble officer's plan to overthrow the Nazis and then make gentle peace with the British, Russians and Americans before Germany was destroyed by its enemies. How close was the group to succeeding? World History invites you on a fascinating journey to bygone eras, allowing you to explore the greatest events in history. eBook: The secret world of the initiate Before the apprentice mason can begin his journey into the secret world of the Order, he must sit alone in a room and think about what lies ahead. For inspiration, he sees the acronym ‘V.I.T.R.I.O.L.’ on the wall, the ancient alchemist's command to search for the inner essence of things. On the table is a skull and a pair of femur bones. They symbolise that the ritual is a kind of death, after which the apprentice is resurrected as an initiate. The stay in the room is just one of many Masonic rituals, most of which are unknown to the uninitiated. Throughout history, people have always gathered in exclusive groups for occult, religious, economic or political purposes. Common to these closed societies are often bizarre rituals and strict rules, not least about silence. No one outside must know what is going on. The secrecy gives the companies an inner strength but arouses suspicion from the outside world. What happens when the powerful men meet behind closed doors? World History invites you on a fascinating journey to bygone eras, allowing you to explore the greatest events in history. Take a trip back in time - to the frontlines of World War 2, to the Viking raids, and to the religious rituals of ancient Egypt. eBook: Historians have extensively studied the Old and New Testaments and used the scriptures to trace the rise of one of the world\'s earliest civilisations. Although it\'s difficult to confirm the stories in the Bible from a historical perspective, it\'s possible that myths originated from real events. This is why geologists are investigating the truth about the Flood and Noah\'s Ark, meteorologists and biologists are trying to understand the ten plagues that affected Egypt, and biblical scholars are searching for evidence of catastrophes that might have destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. A book discussing the mysteries of the Bible is speculative but thought-provoking. And it suggests that science and faith may be more closely related than one might think. World History invites you on a fascinating journey to bygone eras, allowing you to explore the greatest events in history. Take a trip back in time - to the frontlines of World War 2, to the Viking raids, and to the religious rituals of ancient Egypt. A World Apart and Other Stories - Hayes Kathleen - e-kniha
eBook: “It grew dark and a mist spread over the countryside like a curtain. We were at the Bohemian border. Customs control, shouting, the din of the station, and finally the train moved on with a monotonous drone. ‘It was right here that I met Teresa Elinson,’ Marta said, in the corner of the cozy compartment. I replied: ‘Who is Teresa Elinson? I don’t remember you ever mentioning her.’ ‘No, never. It was a kind of adventure. That time too the train hurtled into the dark, where red sparks flew and lights flashed, scattering in the mist...’” Thus begins the story by Růžena Jesenská that gives this book its name. In this anthology, Kathleen Hayes has selected and translated eight stories by Czech female authors at the turn of the 19th and 20th century: a period of female political emancipation and impressive literary development. All of the writers included in the present volume were recognized in their own day and constitute a cross-section of the literary styles of the period. Tilschová’s “A Sad Time” is written in a Naturalist style; Jesenská’s “A World Apart” presents themes and motifs that appealed to the Decadents. Malířová’s “The Sylph” is both diaristic and satirical, while Svobodová’s ironical “A Great Passion”, with its rural setting and folklore motifs, reminds one of the writings of Karel Jaromír Erben. Preissová’s short story may be read as a celebration of folk culture. Benešová’s “Friends” is interesting for its psychological presentation of a child’s point of view and its implicit criticism of anti-Semitism. The book is accompanied by the biographies of each author and an introduction by Kathleen Hayes.

Battle of Britain - World History - e-kniha
eBook: Britain’s finest hour In the summer of 1940, darkness was falling over Europe. The Soviet Union had formed an unholy alliance with Nazi Germany. Norway was all but occupied. And France would soon be overrun by Germans. In July, only Great Britain remained as the last defence against Europe under the swastika’s brutal arms. But Britain was no longer the invincible empire that had subjugated more than a fifth of the Earth’s landmass over the previous 400 years, and the Battle of Britain would prove to be the British Empire’s last moment of glory. Led by Winston Churchill, the British rediscovered the virtues that had made a humble people the rulers of the world. Ingenuity, resourcefulness and – above all – indomitable courage enabled the Royal Air Force to take on the Luftwaffe and hold off the Germans. In June 1940, Winston Churchill called the battle Britain’s “finest hour”, and he was right. The British Empire would not survive for long after World War II, but the Battle of Britain was its magnificent swansong, and the thousands of British lives lost saved Europe from Nazi tyranny. eBook: In the autumn of 1862, Abraham Lincoln visited the Antietam Battlefield in Sharpsburg, Maryland, USA. Elected as the 16th President of the United States just two years prior, he faced a nation torn apart by the Civil War. The long-simmering dispute over the right to slaves had erupted into open warfare between the North and South. The Union sought to enforce its authority, while the South had withdrawn from the Union. Despite his reluctance to war, Lincoln understood that a democratic republic could not tolerate rebellion. The South's defiance had to be met. Initially, the war's primary aim was not the liberation of slaves. However, after Lincoln's powerful Gettysburg Address in 1863, the purpose of the war became clear. When he invoked the US Declaration of Independence, declaring that all are created equal, regardless of skin colour, it became evident that the President was committed to this principle. eBook: In 52 BC, after six years of war against the Gallic tribes, Julius Caesar had tamed another enemy of the Roman Republic. Almost one million Gauls were taken as slaves, while their land became just another Roman province. Soon tonnes of grain along with lucrative taxes were flowing towards the imperial capital, whose inhabitants enjoyed all the luxuries of the provinces. Everything had changed since outlaws had founded Rome almost 500 years earlier. The small city on the seven hills had grown powerful through irresistible military might and political ingenuity, and the Roman Republic came to rule an expanse of territory that stretched around the Mediterranean and beyond. A few years later, Julius Caesar was brutally assassinated, and the republic was replaced by an empire that mad tyrants and power-hungry generals would ultimately destroy from within. Archaeologists and historians have carefully studied various sources, such as ancient postholes and thousand-year-old grape seeds, in their efforts to uncover the truth about the Viking world. This work is crucial because the Vikings did not document their history, and what we know is based on exaggerated accounts from monks and sagas. However, with the help of patience and modern technology, researchers are slowly piecing together the puzzle. While considerable progress has been made, there are still unanswered questions. History's Greatest Tank Battle - World History - e-kniha
eBook: By 1943, Adolf Hitler had realised that the German Army was no longer capable of fighting an offensive war. The army was short of men, guns and tanks, and the Luftwaffe could not afford to lose more aircraft. Consequently, when Hitler flew to his forward headquarters in Ukraine in February 1943, he brought with him a clear message: the German Army would no longer go on the offensive. For the next year, it would instead defend its positions and let the Red Army exhaust itself in futile attacks. As we know, that’s not how history turned out. At the meeting in Ukraine, Hitler’s generals identified a vulnerable spot on the front line where hundreds of thousands of enemies could be captured and the Soviets weakened before they launched their summer offensive. After weeks of deliberation, the Führer was persuaded to make a fateful decision: All forces were to be deployed to the front line salient where they would trap the Red Army near the city of Kursk, 500 kilometres southwest of Moscow. For the next few months, both the German Army and the Red Army staked everything on winning the coming Battle of Kursk. Soviets in their thousands built impenetrable defensive lines, while German units transported newly developed Tiger tanks and Wespe (Wasp) guns by the hundreds to the front line. Finally, on 5th July 1943, Soviet artillery shattered the silence of the balmy Russian summer night. The Battle of Kursk was underway, and the winner of World War II would be decided during the following week’s engagements. eBook: What makes a serial killer? There is a huge difference between killers who kill once in the heat of the moment, mass murderers who slaughter many people at once, and serial killers who follow a specific pattern to kill carefully selected victims. A serial killer is an ice-cold predator who enjoys the hunt, is driven by ritual or a particular impulse, and who becomes increasingly dependent on the release that the murder provides. A serial killer's brain demands multiple victims.German killer Volker Eckert was morbidly obsessed with women's long hair. Jeffrey Dahmer achieved sexual release by dismembering people and eating selected pieces. Alexander Pichushkin was preoccupied with chess and decided to murder 64 people, one per square on a chessboard. Finally, David Berkowitz believed that demons ordered him to kill. The stories told here reveal what drives serial killers and how they carry out their murders. The content is violent and gruesome and certainly not for children.-

Charvát takes his readers through the essential economic, political and intellectual transformations induced in those societies by their transformations into early states. The author also provides a comprehensive view over the entire range of the discussed problems, attempting to perceive the process of establishment of the earliest states of the Old World in its complexity. The book gives the word to ancient statesmen, as well as to men of religion and letters of yore, voicing their alarm in crisis situations of their states, when they feared collapse of what they understood as "civilized society". Addressing their admonitions to kings, managers, generals and, where possible, the widest circles of society, such thinkers urged their contemporaries to defend the ideals on which their civilizations wer e built. The book is addressed to all those interested in the emergence and development of humankind´s earliest states including university students of humanity disciplines.

The Pied Piper - Viktor Dyk - e-kniha

Behind the Lines - Jaroslav Hašek - e-kniha
eBook: V roce 1921, několik měsíců předtím, než Jaroslav Hašek začal psát Osudy dobrého vojáka Švejka, popisuje v cyklu Velitelem města Bugulmy své životní zkušenosti s revolučním Ruskem. Obdobným způsobem, jakým se ve svých povídkách vysmíval předválečné C. a K. monarchii, zachycuje bývalý rudý komisař Hašek bolševickou revoluci. Před čtenářem se tak odehrává úsměvný příběh, v němž, v zapomenutém tatarském městečku Bugulma, vystupuje sovětský velitel tverského revolučního pluku, opilec Jerochymov a velitel města tovaryš Gašek. Skrze humor a nadsázku Hašek ukazuje jednak fanatismus revoluční doby, kdy v nešťastném roce 1918 se náhle vše "vymklo z kloubů", a jednak hloupost či prostou lidskou nejistotu nových vládců. Autobiografcký cyklus Velitelem města Bugulmy je dále doplněn o další Haškovy povídky z té doby.

The Lesser Histories - Jan Zábrana - e-kniha
eBook: From the eighth floor of a tower block in Central Europe, Jan Zábrana surveyed the twentieth century. He had been exiled from his own life by Communism. His parents were imprisoned, their health broken, and he was not allowed to study languages in college. Refusing both to rebel outright or to cave in, he thought of himself as a dead man walking. “To all those who keep asking me to do things for them, I sometimes feel like saying: ‘But I’m dead. I died long ago. Why do you keep treating me as if I were one of the living?’” Yet during some of Europe’s most difficult years, he wrote The Lesser Histories, a collection of sixty-four sonnets that range through themes of age, sex, and political repression—a radiant testament to his times. The lines are emptied both of personal pathos and political stridency. Often Zábrana’s own voice segues into those of poets he had translated over the years, leaving only a bare shimmer of subjectivity—humorous, oblique, pained—with which to view his own works and days. The poems document a splendid and bitter isolation, and are immersed in the humor, hatreds, and loves of the everyday. Published in Czech in the ill-fated year of 1968, they subsequently fell into neglect. After the fall of Communism in 1989, Zábrana’s collected poems and selected diaries were published in Czech, and he was acclaimed as a major twentieth-century writer. Now, with this collection, he can begin to reach English-language readers for the first time.

Ranging from the raw and real themes of war, shellshock, and witchcraft to the role and rise of social class in British society, Woolf’s literary output is a subject of intense interest for literature lovers and scholars alike.
