I can t recommend it enough âââââ Very funny, thought-provoking and a fantastic read. I thoroughly enjoyed it âââââ I ve spent 15 years waiting for a book which entertainingly brings to life the humour, mundanity absurdity of serving in Iraq . . . Thankfully this is that book and it is excellent âââââ Absolutely brilliant from start to finish . . . Just when you feel the situation is about to drop off a cliff (again!), Mulligan turns it around with a jab of wit as amusing yet as honest as the chance of surviving in a Snatch Land Rover in Basra. Read it in three evenings âââââ -------Owain Mulligan was never what you d call a career soldier. Nor even a particularly good one. At weekends he trained with the Territorial Army and dreamt of swapping the mayhem of teaching in a tough school for the adventure of service in Iraq. At least they d let him wear a helmet in Iraq. But when the job in headquarters he s been expecting doesn t materialise, he finds himself on the streets of Basra during one of the most violent periods of the conflict. Between homicidal militias, a chain of command who seem determined to get him killed, and equipment which might well do it for them, he and his men have their work cut out. It certainly puts double geography with 9E into perspective. The Accidental Soldier is a searingly honest and darkly funny account of what it was really like being in the British Army in Iraq (including all the bits they probably hoped you d never find out). We share all the hardships, fears, and occasional lunacy of military life as Owain and his men try to navigate a war gone badly wrong. One thing s for sure; you ll never look at the phrase military precision in quite the same way again...------ This book is absolutely incredible. It made me laugh more than any book in so many years. Collected Poems of Rudyard Kipling - Rudyard Kipling
Introduction and Notes by R.T. Jones, Honorary Fellow of the University of York. This edition of the poetry of Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) includes all the poems contained in the Definitive Edition of 1940. In his lifetime, Kipling was widely regarded as the unofficial Poet Laureate, and he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907. His poetry is striking for its many rhythms and popular forms of speech, and Kipling was equally at home with dramatic monologues and extended ballads. He is often thought of as glorifying war, militarism, and the British Empire, but an attentive reading of the poems does not confirm that view. This edition reprints George Orwell s hard-hitting account of Kipling s poems, first published in 1942, and generally regarded as one of the most important contributions to critical discussion of Kipling.

Captains Courageous - Rudyard Kipling
Rudyard Kipling s 1897 book Captains Courageous chronicles the exploits of fifteen-year-old Harvey Cheyne Jr., the privileged son of a railroad magnate, who is saved from drowning in the North Atlantic by a Portuguese fisherman. The novel was first published in McClure s as a serial in the November 1896 issue, with the final episode appearing in May 1897. The full work was then released that year as a novel, first by Doubleday in the United States and then by Macmillan a month later in the United Kingdom. It is the only book by Kipling that is totally set in North America. Teddy Roosevelt praised the book and Kipling for depicting in the liveliest fashion just what a boy should be and do in his essay What We Can Expect of the American Kid from 1900. The title was originally used by Kipling for a piece about merchants as the new adventurers that appeared in The Times on November 23, 1892. The privileged son of a powerful railroad tycoon in California is Harvey Cheyne Jr. from a transatlantic steamer washed overboard, and the crew of the We re Here saved him. Excellent cod fishing tales that include mention of New England whaling, 19th-century steam, sailing, and the cod fishery.

Kipling - Rudyard Kipling
Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) is perhaps the most controversial major English poetof the last two centuries, not least because of his apparent enthusiasm for the empire. A child of British India, he first became famous for tales of imperial life, notably Kim, the Jungle Book and Barrack Room Ballads. Kipling wrote verse in every classical form from the epigram to the ode, but his most distinctive gift was for the ballads and narrative poems in which he draws vivid characters in universal situations and articulates profound truths in plain language. Yet he was also a subtle and deeply affecting anatomist of the human heart, with a feeling for the natural world which rivals his younger contemporary, D. H. Lawrence. Shattered by World War I in which he lost his only son, his work darkens and deepens in later years, but never loses its extraordinary vitality.

Selected Poems - Rudyard Kipling
Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) is often regarded as the unofficial Laureate of the British Empire. Yet his writing reveals a ferociously independent figure at times violently opposed to the dominant political and literary tendencies of his age. Arranged in chronological order, this diverse selection of his poetry shows the development of Kipling s talent, his deepening maturity and the growing sombreness of his poetic vision. Ranging from early, exhilarating celebrations of British expansion overseas, including Mandalay and Gunga Din , to the dignified and inspirational If - and the later, deeply moving Epitaphs of the War - inspired by the death of Kipling s only son - it clearly illustrates the scope and originality of his work. It also offers a compelling insight into the Empire both at its peak and during its decline in the early years of the twentieth century.

Kipling s epic rendition of the imperial experience in India is also his greatest long work. Two men - Kim, a boy growing into early manhood, and the lama, an old ascetic priest - are fired by a quest. Kim is white, although born in India. While he wants to play the Great Game of imperialism, he is also spiritually bound to the lama and he tries to reconcile these opposing strands. A celebration of their friendship in an often hostile environment, Kim captures the opulence of India s exotic landscape, overlaid by the uneasy presence of the British Raj.The Penguin English Library - 100 editions of the best fiction in English, from the eighteenth century and the very first novels to the beginning of the First World War.

The Jungle Book - Rudyard Kipling
Among the best loved of all classics for children are the tales of Mowgli, the boy who learned the law of the jungle as he grew up among a pack of wolves in India s Seeonee Hills. First published in 1894, the book imagines a child living and flourishing in a community of animals - an idea that perhaps had its origin in Kipling s unhappy childhood. His stories are not animal stories in the realistic sense; they are wonderful, beautiful fairy tales, wrote Ernest Thompson Seton, the great Canadian naturalist. Kurt Wiese s illustrations, commissoned by the American firm of Doubleday in 1932, have never appeared in Britain before. An artist with a particular interest in animals and an amazing visual memory, he remembered all he had observed on his travels in the Far East during the early 1900s, first as a salesman in China and then as a prisoner-of-war of the Japanese.

Podnikl cesty do Číny, Japonska a Spojených států. Své čtenáře zaujal především cizokrajnou tematikou, popisem přírody a zvyků domorodců a pozoruhodným uměleckým jazykem.

Rudyard Kipling - Andrew Lycett
Paragon of English virtues or racist imperialist? Andrew Lycett (acclaimed biographer of Ian Fleming) has returned to primary sources to tell the intricate story of a misunderstood genius who became Britain s most famous and highest earning author. Among the many new sources, Lycett has discovered previously unpublished letters that illuminate Kipling s crucial years in India, his first girlfriend (the model for Mrs Hauksbee of Plain Tales from the Hills), his parents decision to send him back to England to boarding school; and in his adult life his use of opium, his frustrating times in London and the brief peace he found in America before the devastating loss of both his young daughter and, in the First World War, his son. Lycett also uncovers the extraordinary story of Kipling s great love for Flo Garrard, daughter of the crown jeweller, and unravels the complicated yet enthralling saga of the American family the Balestiers, and of Carrie Balestier who became Kipling s wife. This biography is full of new material on Kipling s financial dealings with Lord Beaverbrook, his friendships with T.E. Lawrence, the painter Edward Burne-Jones and the Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin (who was his cousin).

Humorous Tales - Rudyard Kipling
First published in 1921, this volume collects some of the most comical stories Kipling published throughout his writing career. These tales derive their humour from absurd situations â “ a drunken Irish soldier waking up to find himself worshipped as a god in the Indian holy city of Benares, a monkey let loose in an English village â “ and from lampooning the attitudes and discourses of the time. While presenting many aspects which will be familiar to Kipling readers â “ rollicking adventures, exotic locales and an interest in the animal world â “ these Humorous Tales explore the more light-hearted and amusing side to the great masterâ ™s work.

The Jungle Book + CD (Black Cat Readers Early Readers Level 3) - Rudyard Kipling
This book features essentials of the English language, such as introducing oneself and asking basic questions. It also offers young readers an excellent opportunity to learn other more unusual vocabulary items as the story develops in its jungle setting. Each chapter is preceded by a picture dictionary which helps children understand some of the less common words, and sparks off pre-reading classroom discussions. Following each chapter is a multiple-choice reading comprehension, a ‘fun activity’ – such as join the dots, listen and match, colouring in and much more. There is also an acting activity which encourages even the shyest child to learn and speak English. The accompanying cassette is of course, an essential prop for rehearsals.
